@@erenyeeagah204 Agree. The thing that it was so sad it was kind of funny was how for holiday 2016 Nintendo didn't make new stock for the Wii U; they stopped production right before the holidays and said the Wii Us still at retail were all they were going to offer for holidays. They really wanted to get rid of the Wii U as soon as possible, and I think that if they could have, they would have released the Switch in late 2016. I think there's an opposite situation with the Switch 2, it doesn't seem like they want to release it soon because the Switch is such a safe sell (even though it's not the top-selling console anymore). And there's no guarantee that the Switch 2 will be as succesful as the regular Switch.

I dont get the "switch performance bad, Steamdeck good" talk in the comments. Switch 2 is dedicated gaming hardware that studios will be designing against. No studios are targetting steam deck as a platform or baseline for their optimization targets because there arent enough of them out there to matter. It's been doing more with less since day one. Until most studios do, whatever nintendo puts out for the Switch 2 will run circles around steamdeck's successor or any mobile consoles for that matter. With more advanced API's and libraries itll probably end up matching and in most cases outperforming the series S with more consistent performance.
@cyberrb25 Жыл бұрын
There are indeed nuances that make people incorrect in their considerations, but as far as we see, many big-ish developers are using the Steam Deck as a baseline, because it's the biggest close environment you can find on PC. It's hard to decide which is the baseline for your game to run, so when you have a good bunch of people that do rally on a format (I mean on PC), it's easier, even if it's just for ease of mind, to have that for the minimum viable product. TL;DR for this segment below: Steam Deck is expecting you to choose your poison and Switch has to juggle with a lot more stakeholders. But regarding the Switch vs. Steam Deck, there are two big considerations: - First, that the Steam Deck has technology inaccessible at the era of the Switch, be it at most price points. And we're seeing that Switch trailblazes stuff that then the Steam Deck adopts, like the OLED screen. Even though we might want to try and point it back to Vita, it is hard to consider it the parent in that: They stopped doing OLED screens after the first Vita model and nobody in the gaming world did OLED-screened portables. - Second, that the Steam Deck has the tiered system that makes it most people think the US$399 system (US$100, or 33% more than the Switch) is actually having the components of the $529 specs. Add to that that you almost have to tinker with a few games to choose different configurations, they have in that sense more leeway to mess it up than the Switch, because it's harder to pin the blame to the developer/console maker. It's going to be a wonder if Nintendo will have the capital to sell the Switch 2 at US$399, 449 or 499, but they're not going to have the luxury of going over that, whereas Steam Deck will be able to have the even more expensive system (currently they have the US$549 system as the middle of the pack) that they can make harder on the components and hammer the battery and heat - something that Nintendo will be expected not to be too hard on to have actual battery life. And also, let's not forget that Nintendo has to share some of the price with retailers. You cannot go to a Target (or look at an official seller on Amazon) and buy a Steam Deck off the shelf. Would you go buy at Nintendo's online store as the exclusive official seller for the new system?

Nvidia has documented amperes gen 2 raytrace cores as having 2x in its rt specialized compute performance as amperes cuda cores have gp compute performance. So if this is a 3 tflop fp32 @ 1ghz device from the cuda cores, that's 6 tflops/Tops performance from the ray trace cores just for the kind of operations the rt cores do, (bvh traversal, ray intersects). Too bad gen 2 rt cores don't completely do everything needed for raytracing on their own. A 12 sm ampere is too small in fp32 cuda shader/fp16 non tensor compute to run most of these pc denoisers the way they have been used to be effectively practical without a complete overhaul. Moving the denoiser into an ai model, which can then be ran as full tensor ops on tensor cores with sparse inference at 8x Compute throughput, increases speed of execution and removes that load from the cuda cores/non tensor tensor core use. Thats a hardware agnostic (aside from it has to be rtx) benefit, that is more beneficial the less shader core performance you have to spare.

The OLED switch is a gimmick, Vivid mode forces a bt2020 color space into rec709 content, bt2020 is only used for HDR content, all switch games are mastered in rec709 for SDR, so what vivid mode does is over saturate colors, you lose color depth color detail and if an object has different hues or shades of color, you lose detail. Any ISF certified calibrator, will tell you to switch the vivid setting to standard because you're forcing the panel to display a wider color gamut that it doesn't properly support. Your phones also do this, tvs can do it also.

Its a fun talking point, but to me, assuming the ray tracing solution in the Switch 2 isnt leaps and bounds ahead of what we have currently in terms of efficiency, it's a bit silly imo. The only userbase that generally thinks RT is worth the performance hit is high end Nvidia GPU users, because theyre still getting great overall performance by brute force regardless of RT being on or off. Pretty much any AMD user, and any Nvidia user up through mid range isn't all that concerned with it because its not worth it. And now were talking about the Switch 2, which, perhaps being slightly generous, might rival a PS4 in terms of raw power? It would be a travesty if they wasted performance on RT over resolution and frame rate, especially since the Switch 2 will be stretched to it's limits on release by 3rd party games rhat have already come out. I think it's a marketing tool and future proofing (which is the right choice). Again, I'm assuming there isnt some huge advancement in RT. I disagree that game development will change so much in the next ~8 years that target hardware not supporting ray tracing will be an issue. That doesnt make any sense. 3rd party devs will be targeting minimum specs equivalent to today's current mid-high range PCs for a long time. Entangling RT so much into your game that it's infeasible to do the work required to have it work well with RT off is an odd notion.
@Nobody-sp7ug Жыл бұрын
Keep an eye on the switch 2, lot of people are going to be surprised because they've been fed false premises. Probably the biggest one being high end rtx cards are doing raytrace rendering. They aren't, they are doing hybrid rendering, which means they are doing BOTH the raster rendering AND ray traced rendering on top of it. On ampere ray trace cores have 2x more compute throughput than cuda cores (only for ray trace calculations though, not general purpose like shader cores) and its still not enough for raytraced rendering.... but its also only a tiny fraction of the gpu die. Nvidia would need to go all in on a ray trace over raster render pipeline gpu, which they haven't done yet. So instead Nvidia has specialized hardware that does the most intensive calculations needed, but only for the parts of a scene which benefit the most from rt, but also don't actually render, they send the data to the shader cores, where a denoiser interprets the image and then integrates it into the rasterized scene. It's still nowhere near what's needed for actual ray rendering, (at higher end gpus it's overkill for what can be done with hybrid. Rt cores spend a LOT of time idling). So we have these rt cores that can do ridiculous speed acceleration structure navigation and ray triangle hit determination and they send the results of all that work back to the cuda cores to work on, performing a process called denoising, turning a bunch of dots from rays into a recognizable image. Because of this, ray tracing and raster rendering fight over the same resources. This becomes an increasingly large problem the further down the range you go, as you have less cuda cores and less memory to work with the results the very strong rt cores keep belting out. It's first proto iteration has only just been first shown, but ray reconstruction is going to have a massive impact on both hybrid and full ray rendering. Remember where dlss first started out? What ray reconstruction does, is make an ai model for denoising. What's important about this, is that on nvidia gpu's ai models aren't handled by cuda cores, but by tensor cores, which can have up to a 8x performance acceleration compared to running the ai model on cuda cores. That means a small little switch 2 gou that gets 3 tflops out of its cuda cores when docked, instead of having to render a 3d scene AND struggle to run denoising data sent from rt cores, now it just has to worry about rendering its 3d image, as a seperate group of processors called tensor cores is now going to handle denoising at the same time, so you have 3 tflops (@ 1 ghz) running your traditional 3d graphics, and then a second group of processors doing all the Ray tracing calculations @ 6 tflops, and then a third group of processors handling ray trace denoising and super resolution at 24 sparse tensor tflops.... all at the same time. There is absolutely nothing stopping devs from doing this on *any* rtx gpu. It's just not worth singling out their time when they have to ensure basic compatability with soooooo many other configurations. But there is only going to be 1 Configuration on switch 2. So if they want to bring it to switch 2 at all..... And once the works already done..... Watch, dollars to donuts I bet you switch 2 is going to be the gateway into better rt hardware utilization and optimization across the full dang range of rtx devices.

Like all ampere/ada cards, it's going to be nigh impossible to fully utilize, will be utilized only for a fraction of render time and then idle, and is not where performance hits from ray tracing use comes from. ML/ai model performance: Series S: 0 Tflops/s. RDNA has no hardware ml. T239: 4x matrix multiply, plus 2x sparse inference (for fp16 other data types have more). When running tensor ops on ai models the tensor cores have an 8x hardware acceleration over non tensor use. 3x8=24 Sparse Tensor Tflops fp16. This is where the power to run dlss comes from. Provided your tensor cores opmem aren't starved of data because you only have 4GB vram and are thrashing your memory constantly swapping in and out assets and can't consistantly provide the 200MB for feeding tensor cores for dlss 4k/100 MB for dlss 1080p. So many people here want Nintendo to be this cheap and uninspired tablet that will play (probably worse) multi platform titles. That seems extremely short-sighted. Nintendo had always forged a path of innovation and used a unique approach to gaming. They literally reinvented handheld gaming this generation and everyone has copied them in the most blatant of ways. I think Nintendo will once again forge a new experience, improve upon what they did with Switch, but also go far beyond in ways most people cannot predict.

Really interesting video! But I think we should stop comparing the hardware to PS4 or Xbox One, not because it's not true, but because practically, de facto, it's not what it's gonna be from what we know. For your normal Joe that doesn't know anything about this stuff, Switch 2 will be looked at as being on par with at least the Series S. Constantly comparing SW2 to PS4 gives off a wrong impression to people that don't understand what DLSS is, even if you explain it, from what I read, a lot of people still don't get it. I think it would be easier for people if you said "PS4 Pro/ Series S", that's most likely how the games are going to look like in a *worst* case scenario. There is no way games will look like base PS4 or Xbox One, also not Steam Deck, outside of very few terrible ports maybe. I don’t understand why there’s comments saying that if the Switch 2 doesn’t match the same power as PS5 then it’s a “failure.” First, a portable PS5 powered would have like 2 minutes battery life and explode in your face. Second, that’s delusional and wrong comparison. Even Sony can’t make a native PS5 portable so why set Nintendo up to fail exceeding high “expectations.” Third, it’s up to the game developers to take advantage of the new technology to implement in their games and have it run on supported hardware. There are barely any games on PS5 and Xbox that showcases next gen tech like raytracing (as discussed in this podcast IF YOU LISTEN to it). I think what’s happening is Sony and Xbox fans are afraid that the Switch 2 will look better and continue to body in game sales just like how the current Switch is performing. It must be embarrassing for those console warriors that a little old handheld is still making a killing in it’s 7th year on the market. If you don’t like Nintendo, just say so. Why spout doom and gloom about their imminent “failure” when you don’t know what it’ll be. Just remember that Nintendo sold over 132 million, probably reached 140 million at this point if not surpass it, of Switch consoles and Nintendo wants to transition all those people and then some to migrate to the next generation. I think they’ll be able to do it and I’m willing to sit back and let it happen.

The Switch 2 SoC has Tensor Cores. Nvidia is making the SoC. Why would Nvidia release a mobile chip in 2024 without one of their more impressive bits of tech?
@stealth0n Жыл бұрын
@@ninja226 Nvidia's PR talk is kinda hard to unwrap, but neither Tensor nor RT cores are actually "cores", they're more like a part of a SM (real physical "core") that have acceleration for ML/RT tasks. If they aren't in use - they perform other kinds of regular tasks, so not using ML/RT doesn't mean you leave performance on the table. And Apple's solution is very similar to that, so it's not unrealistic to expect some kind of RT implementation for Switch 2. You should also remember that RT comes in different forms, i.e. devs may stick to providing RT reflections only without relying on heavy global illumination solutions

Anyone who is buying a Switch, for that expected $300 price point, doesn't care about having shinier floors If the tech gets there passively, then it'll be included, but Nintendo isn't going to brute force anything for the sake of visual competition Also Epic Games make an okay engine, but I would be fine to see the company lose money I value the commentary of industry veterans, but the ideological slobknobbing for visuals is kind of depressing to hear. Gameplay is more important than how pretty something is.
@N.i.E.M.O Жыл бұрын
Additional power and stuff like DLSS serves more than just 'shinier graphics'. It also affects gameplay and stability possibilities just as much. And I know, Nintendo fans have been in some heavy copium, repeating their mantra of "gameplay over graphics" even since Nintendo gave up and re-released the GameCube in 2006. That being said, I don't believe any of the rumors about Switch 2 being as powerful as a PS4 Pro and with DLSS. I expect the system to be almost indistinguishable from the current Switch in terms of graphics capabilities (similar to GameCube to Wii). But they will shoehorn some dumb gimmick that nobody wants (but some people will pretend is brilliant) in order to justify falling behind another generation. Expect 'Wii U: Part II'
@BlueUltima9999 Жыл бұрын
@@N.i.E.M.O That's a couple hot takes right there But the big one is all games should focus on gameplay over just pretty graphics. Now game experience can be a part of gameplay as a whole, But a game is not supported solely on its fidelity. The game doesn't play well or is engaging with the player, then it doesn't really matter. And as for the copium bit, some of the best games that have come out in the last 10 years, while nice to look at, definitely put a higher development focus on the interactiveness of the gameplay experience, then over the shininess of it. And Ray tracing doesn't improve stability or performance in a reduction sense, it's purely there for the immersive experience. If you're talking about DLSS and like the procedural texture up resin and those technologies, that's different and that does contribute to the overall playability of the title on lower power machines.

@@BlueUltima9999 I don't disagree that how enjoyable a game is to actually play is more important than how graphically accomplished it is. But the two don't have to be mutually exclusive. When it comes to Nintendo, there should be no denying that they have been treading a path that requires the least amount of effort in terms of actual technological progress, relying solely on their development teams to work around these shortcomings in order to provide a gameplay experience that is still fun to play. But making a game 'fun; doesn't mean you have to sacrifice things such as modern graphical standards, or modern gaming features, in order to achieve that. I don't think any of the best Wii games would have been any less fun to play if they had graphics somewhat comparable to say, PS3 or 360. Point is, Nintendo as a company is (or has become) all about producing the cheapest product they can get away with with the least amount of effort. Yes, the development studios under their belt are some of the best in the industry, but you have to admit they are still being held back. And don't get me wrong, I know why they do it - to maximize profits - just like any other multi-billion dollar corporation would do. The problem is that the way Nintendo does it is a direct disservice to its consumers. Yes, they may 'technically' sell their products for 'cheaper' than the competition, but the product they are selling is also very outdated compared to everything else on the market. And just touching on specifics outside of outdated and underpowered hardware, we have a lacking online service which consists of a lack of basic modern gaming features, most notably the simple ability for voice chat AND basic text messaging systems - which is honestly baffling in today's age (and when some of Nintendo's own previous hardware had at least some kind of functionality, even as terrible as it was). And I'm not saying that MS and Sony don't have their own issues as well. They certainly do.

I think a pro switch was in the books but with Covid and the chip shortage it wouldn’t have worked that’s why I believe games like Control and Kingdom Hearts got turned to cloud versions. The steam deck hardware is also cheaper to develop now 2 years later so Nintendo needs to future proof this system. And shoot for above the steam deck. I know everyone thinks Nintendo is going to just coast and under perform but I can see that with their development getting bigger like Tears of the kingdom and Xenoblade those devs are asking for more power. Even Capcom suggested more ram for the current switch so I can see them shooting for 10. Also the fact that a lot of games are probably still in the tuck like a new Mario Kart, Metroid and maybe getting a big 3rd party during the launch year like BG3 or Alan Wake would be good. Also, requiring installation could be to use faster internal storage, similar to SSD installs on PS5 and XSX. Perhaps a microSD card slot for storage but require copying files to the system storage to run. I'd also like to see multiple SKU with higher internal storage. Now you want to put ray tracing in there. You guys are going to sorely disappointed. You are looking at last gen PS4 Pro (with some added GPU features) but nothing close to this gen. I find it funny you think all these other companies just don't know how to build computers and consoles and Nintendo does and somehow they will magically do what others can do within the price point and small size a Switch 2 must meet. Of course, if Nintendo does not go with a mobile device, then all bets are off.

Remember that the specs and chips have leaked a while ago. And like, actually leaked, not "my uncle at nintendo" on 4chan, it was leaked in a ransomware attack. We know roughly what it's capable of. It has RT cores. That's a fact.

What about 4k? That's going to be a standard here shortly as well. If DLSS is just bringing us ray tracing and not 4k, what's the point! I hope Nintendo aims for performance & visuals above the Xbox series X. Thank you guys for the video. Speculation is all wii have until Nintendo finally announces it.

4k isn't the standard really. Unless you like watching a movie for gameplay

@tumultuousv I said it will be a standard shortly. Just like how 1080p became the standard from 720p.

Switch graphics look like xbox 360, Switch 2 graphics will look like xbox one. That's all I need to say.

The Switch 2 doesn’t just have to compete with the PS5, Xbox Series and the Steam deck…it has to compete with the PS6, Xbox Series 2 and the Steam deck 2. If the Switch 2 releases in 2025, it could be around until 2032.
@C--A Жыл бұрын
The PS6 won't be here until 2028 at the earliest! And the Switch almost 7 years old is still comfortably outselling the Xbox Series X&S globally 👍🏾 Xbox gaming hardware isn't that popular anymore! Steam Deck hasn't even sold 4 million units, it's no threat to Nintendo 😂

They can't even get so called AAA games right on the Series X and PS5 this gen....and long dev cycles....Switch 2 will be fine doing their own thing
@jeffhernandez6880 Жыл бұрын
This is a terrible comparison, the switch one plays amazing even with 10 year old hardware, same with ps5 it competes with my 4090, they have hardware designed SPECIFICALLY for gaming, u can't compare PC with gaming consoles with "equivalent" specs
