Coney's back with another Fact and Opinion where he debates your hot gaming takes on Twitter. In this episode, Coney hears your thoughts on whether Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild is a bad game, what people want in a fighting game, whether unlocking things is fun, how long JRPGs take to beat, and if the Nintendo Switch is a bad console that will never make triple A title on the scale of Sony. What do you think? Are these Facts or Opinions?

nintendo consoles are intended to be simpler, and the games reflect that, they feel comfortable making simple and intuitive games rather than high production value games. thats the way they stand out, and they should and will never make a superior console because of that. we love mario because of its simplicity, and we as a community have mixed feelings on TLoU2 because its unintuitive and doesnt feel that fun. I never thought of this until now, but I totally agree with will on that. they probably arent incapable however, but dont feel like it and thats the right choice for nintendos success

Making a console with good hardware doesn't mean they have to overcomplicate the games that come with them. A game being simple does not say one thing or the other about a games quality and there are plenty of games that can tow the line between complicated and being fun.

But Nintendo's games _aren't_ simpler. In fact, that have way more depth than just about any other game out there. Play Smash at a tournament level and tell me that it's simple. Watch top-level Breath of the Wild play and tell me it's simple. Or Super Mario 64 speedruns. Being intuitive and easy to play at a basic level is not the same as being simplistic.

Unblocking characters gradually in a competitive game (read: fighting game) tends to serve the purpose of gradually introducing your players to all your games characters, rather than overwhelming them by throwing your whole 30-character roster at them at once. I'm a fan of large rosters, but there have been so many fighting games I've put down because I was overwhelmed with the sheer amount of new information dumped onto my lap at once. That being said, unlocking all characters should be either easy, or optionally instantaneous with something like a cheat code. There will always be people who can deal with a huge, new roster (in fact, many find this fun). Especially true if your game is a sequel with returning characters.

The thumbnail question is only really controversial because it implies Nintendo is lesser because they can't "get on sony's level" and thus aren't making "AAA" games. Like, yeah, Nintendo probably couldn't make a Last of Us. Sony has also unequivocally demonstrated that they can't make a good Mario. I also hate how "AAA Game" has taken on such a warped meaning, as if the seminal entries of the most iconic video game franchises of all time are somehow not "AAA". If anything, call God of War and The Last of Us arthouse games or something, idk.

I would qualify a game like fall guys as a triple A title, so it would depend on what actually merits a game for classification If it's about which game has the highest budget, the halo games have flopped since H3. If it's about box office, I'm pretty sure a lot of people reserved Bioshock Infinite and the studio fell apart in the long run Regardless though, Sony isn't good for _making_ games they are experts at selling the platform. Its like how people like Mac for iTunes and software like photoshop, but iTunes doesn't make the music and you can use photoshop on just about any OS Your Last of Us example is study on exceptional publishing relations. It was the way Lorne Lanning described their partnership when he was releasing oddworld for the first time. So give a game like Crash to Vendi Versal and you get whatever Wrath of Cortex was. Regardless of what studio designed them, Sony never had a hand in their production- they were just a buffer so that the cost over publishing rights didn't screw the developers into bankruptcy Nintendo on the other hand DOES have creative control over their primary titles and they ARE AAA games. The thumbnail is talking about having a game like Fire Emblem compete with other exclusives for quarterly earning margins They are sitting pretty under that cushy Nintendo banner, but if they had to hold their own against a God of War, there would be 3 FE characters in Smash instead of 17. If you want to argue that they're solid games, so was Starfox 64 and it didn't save the IP from being underwhelming down the line When we're talking about AAA, its a measure of what games encourage the purchase of consoles and peripherals/services. So why you would buy Mario Galaxy 2 and a Wii over Gears of War 2 and an Xbox 360 elite. The latter has people wanting to buy an console for Xbox live multi-player. The [former] I guess because you have faith in Miyamoto being a genius and maybe you live the wii remote _that_ much

@@ramblincapuchin9075 I'm gonna be honest, I've gone through your response about a dozen times and it still reads like word soup. From what I can tell, you're basically saying that, if Nintendo's exclusives had to compete with the likes of Sony and XBox exclusives, removed from the Nintendo ecosystem, they probably wouldn't be able to keep up. If that's the case, then all I can say is that, even when you remove the Nintendo ecosystem bias, most of Nintendo's output doesn't really compete with the big name Sony and XBox exclusives. The two closest you can argue are probably Splatoon and Breath of the Wild, being the closest things you can get to a Nintendo shooter and open world game respectively, but even then those games either target completely different demographics to their "big 2" counterparts or have enough unique design to differentiate themselves from the pack.

@@gilolaes4725 Well you'd be right on your last point up unto the measure of innovation that [differentiates] them within the categories you've mentioned For starters TLoZ hasn't been open world for a long time, so whatever nuance or charm that Zelda brings to that format, let's just say that nostalgia plays an enormous role. To save you some "word soup" maybe start by discussing what cooking brings to open world games _more_ than what it brings to a Zelda game. Cooking is a primary convention of BotW's design, is it special or just interesting In likesame fashion, what does Splatoon's camera style bring to shooters better than it would Splatoon as its own game (like the Octo expansion) To get truer to _my point_ : is there enough of what those games are in their respective games to make people want to buy consoles just to play them. Let's say that for the sake of the argument that they still had enough investors and capital that they had the same polish to qualify as a AAA. The argument, at the end of the day- is that Nintendo doesn't actually do big budget, they make cheap toys and sell you on the fun According to you, you only get to be AAA when you're a big budget exclusive. I take it that polished titles like Splatoon don't measure up because the company they work for only pumps out products after they've been refined like white sugar

How on earth does BotW "simplify its core gameplay" in general? If anything, they've replaced static systems with more dynamic ones. About the thing at 5:31, I think the reason lots of people want depth so bad isn’t necessarily so that they can reach the bottom, it’s so they can stop diving deeper wherever they feel comfortable. And if the mood strikes them, the option to go deeper is still there. Allow me to use an *epic fucking gamer analogy* real quick. Is there really any Minecraft player in the world that, under normal circumstances, is going down a cool cave system with a bunch of stuff in it only for it to suddenly end, and isn’t even a little bummed out to some extent? That’s kind of what I’m getting at, and unlike Minecraft you can’t even choose to dig further, you just have to be done and move on to something else because it’s not in your control, which sucks. Plus, Melee alone is a testament to how far depth can take a game, intentional or not. I don’t disagree that lots of players want that immediate satisfaction of feeling strong and cool from the get go, but when that satisfaction is done with, what does the game have left?
@alondite215
@alondite215 3 жыл бұрын
Most people don't even know what depth is. They'll experience depth without even realizing or appreciating it because they don't understand what it is, how important it is, or how rare it actually is in video games. Most games don't extend beyond one or two interplay counters, meaning that interactions end far too quickly for depth to even develop. And not every bit of interplay needs to be deep; a similar effect can be created through the counterpoint of layering multiple forms of contrary motion to create something more nuanced, even if the individual interactions lack depth.

On the ""devs listening to gamers" deal, they should listen to people, but then stick to their guns on what actually matters. Feedback matters a lot on many aspects and can seriously improva a game, and having access to it is always good, but Devs should still have their convictions
@Wattmelon

I think listening to the gaming community is only really beneficial for indie games with smaller communities. When it comes to big name franchises like Zelda, there’s gonna be a very vocal part of the community that will backlash against anything new because they’ve played a bunch of Zelda games before, and that’s not what they perceive as Zelda. For smaller independent titles, there’s usually no preconceived idea of what the game should be, and while there’s still gonna be toxic comments from people about how they think the game should work/look/feel, they’ll usually be easier to weed out and separate from the actual constructive criticism some players provide.

About the feedback form gamers during development, I think it changes depending on the project. On some games, feedback can be great, (best example I can think of is Hades being in pre-release for a couple years so the devs could adjust their ideas to feedback), but if the devs have their vision and are confident in their game, then they should stick with it. So, yes, it is both :)

Now I know you are the funny content man, but saying devs should mostly not listen to gamers is absurd. Think about Cyberpunk. Do you think the devs should think, "Our game isn't buggy, we're not listening, la la la la la...", or do you think they should address the bugs? The problem is the first comment is talking about communication and the second is taking about criticism. You then generalize both to mean, 'Should devs listen to gamers?' which is not what the first comment said. I consider game testers to be gamers as well, should the devs not listen to them? Even when the game is in an uncompleted alpha stage and the devs hire game testers to... criticise them? The first comment has two parts. The first being " If devs communicate with gamers, it will ALWAYS be beneficial when creating a game that most will enjoy ", which is wrong. Of course, it won't always be beneficial as some people are just wrong about things. But to say the majority of times, devs should not listen... I mean I get that from a business perspective. Cyberpunk would have lost sales if the devs were honest and said it was an incomplete buggy mess. If you only were addressing the first part, I'd be more inclined to agree, as the first part is only talking about game creation. The problem is you lump the first part into the second part and the second comment when they address a different issue. Simple question, how can the act of communicating itself lead to a worse game? Of course, if a commenter for a fighting game said, "Can you make my main as busted as brawl meta knight plz and thx." and the devs listened then, of course, it would ruin the game. The second part of the first comment never said to listen to everyone and implement their feedback, but to simply have communication. The second comment is absolutely wrong, cause it said "Developers should stop listening to criticism". As the hypothetical example at the beginning of this comment shows, that is absurd. The devs shouldn't listen to everyone or listen to no one, it should be on a case by case basis.

If a person says a gun suck, it's probably not because the gun sucks. Maybe the enemies are annoying, maybe another gun is better, maybe it just looks kinda funny and they don't wanna use it. Players have a lot to say, but are HORRIBLE at articulation.

ALSO I think everyone's answer on how helpful Dev feedback is depends heavily on what types of games people prefer. For example: I really enjoy evolving, live-service games. Thats a genre that almost requires some level of communication between Dev and player just by the nature of the game getting continuously updated

pokemon is a result of devs listening to gamers. The public wanted pokemon, so they gave us pokemon. the same pokemon. 10 times over.

Its also weird thinking one of the most highly regarded mainline games in the series, heart gold and soul silver, are just remakes of other pokemon games, which are basically remakes but with different pokemon and antagonists and professors.

The switch is the modern n64. Everyone developed for it, but no one has designed THE killer app that has truly changed peoples minds about gaming. The switch is eShop + BotW + Odyssey the console (You could toss Horizons in there, but you can play animal crossing on the 3DS and will play it on the next big console) We played Snowboard kids and Gemini- and they're out of the scope of Nintendo's 3 pillars. Unlike the pillars however, those games are not in development anymore. In likesame manner, games like ARMS which began life on the switch will fade in to obscurity

As an older gamer now, 33, I agree with Connie on letting the devs make the games they want. Video games are an art form after all and I'd rather the devs take a chance on creating something special than intentionally something the same as everything else. I've had several doubts about several video games over the years because I thought the devs screwed up, but once I play the game, I love it. Wind Waker being a prime example.

My only counter for the Nintendo AAA title argument depends on the future of Metroid Prime 4. IF the developers end up making the game for the next Nintendo Console (Switch Pro?) and IF the next console has much better hardware, then there's a POSSIBILITY of a AAA Metroid Prime game.

I think the last one is interesting because Nathan doesn't really make the distinction between feedback that could change the direction of the game and minor tweaks / fixes to elements that may ruin enjoyment of the game - obviously that's veering more into the design aspect of the game but that's why I think communication with your audience is absolutely vital when it comes to making as successful of a release as possible. What's the point of things like demos if not to increase the chances of that happening? Now, am I saying devs should take all feedback from their audience? Should devs ignore their vision and let their audience take the wheel? Absolutely not, but I think it's interesting that Nathan and Coney don't entertain this sort of perspective. Just my two cents though.

Do I want a 4k Nintendo Console? Not really no. They make fun games, and if I lose fun for prettier graphics, you've lost my money. Why else would I play on a 480p 3DS when my phone is 1080p? Because those 3DS games are amazingly fun. And now I got a 720p console on my 4k TV. Shits looks good enough, but its hella fun to play on.

A perfect example of the should devs listen to gamers ruining a game is in Hello Neighbor Was setting up to be quite a neat little game but it ended up being kinda ruined because the devs built too much into the fans theories and stuff instead of sticking to their original vision.

i just dont get the idea that nintendo first party games arent the same level of quality as a AAA game. they obviously dont want to compete with the other consoles so they dont have to make their AAA games, but i think whats confusing is how were defining AAA and AAA quality. like AAA is the level of polish and money that sony and microsoft can put forward to helping develop large immersive or story driven games with a bunch of cool shit in them. your last of usses, your red deads, your spidermans and gtas. nintendo at the moment will not compete in this market. that is fact. but making something on the same level? this probably falls into comparing apples and oranges to see which is better, but id say nintendo makes games equivalent to AAA quality. for years theyve been known for their nintendo polish. their focus on gameplay for fun experiences. even if they cant compete with money, number of qualoty mechanics in their games, or polish, they make up for it in how the gameplay is thought of. they are capable of making something of the level of AAA prestige games, in shit like odyssey, botw, luigis mansion, smash whatever

I think the switch has great games (except splatoon) but the hardware is so bad it isn't worth it. You can buy a ps4 slim with hdr, about the same amount of great exclusives and good online for a cheaper price than the switch. Also, botw is not that innovative, it is only for the gamers that only play Nintendo games.
