The popularity of chess proves that a game does not have to be mechanically complex to be strategically complex. Chess has 6 pieces with one move each, yet is is extremely deep and interesting. Meanwhile some games have hundreds of characters with tons of mechanics and are boring as heck. Game devs should be focusing on the base concept of a game rather than how many mechanics there are in it

Background music is the single most ubiquitous form of psychological manipulation in modern times. Mario kart Wii is the best Mario Kart, It has the best selection of tracks, it has intuitive motion controls, and it has a thriving community of people who play the game to this day. Mario kart Wii is comparable to Super smash bros melee because the fun comes from how different the mechanics and gameplay is from all of the other games. You have zippers, tricks were introduced, and inside drifting bikes alongside wheelies. It has the best modding capabilities, and thousands of custom tracks have been made for people to play. It changed the entire mario kart formula, and is easily the best I will admit the graphics are worse than Double dash

Sorry for the weird name, just call me Feder. Indie games are superior to AAA games most of the time because they have more heart out into them. The creators pour their heart and soul into these projects, and they mostly don’t care for the money as much as they do for the experience, which makes the games feel more personal and heartfelt.

opinion: Skill-based match making (outside of ranked) ruins and in some cases can kill games. It makes it impossible for above-average players to sit back and enjoy games casually, since everyone else in the lobby is of the same skill level and thus has to try very hard to win. It also takes away the drive to improve from newer players, since they don't have a reason to improve when everyone in their lobbies are just as bad as they are. If you want to fight people of the same skill level, go to ranked.

The game industry is becoming more remakes/remasters/reboots and less new IPs (for example Bugsnax) with graphical quality being the only “innovation”. This in turn is feeding back into the three/re’s and big developers are scared of making new IP’s and when they do, their lack of innovation leads to a flop, scaring them away even more.

The best story based game will always and forever be better then the best completely competitive game. The experience in a story based game is more memorable and leaves a longer impact on the player. I remember how I felt after I finished Xenoblade chronicles more vividly then the time I climbed in league. Celeste has barely any story compared to its amount of gameplay, a better example would be the last of us, oneshot, or soma. Second a game can be not story based and also not competetive. TF2, doom, payday 2, and binding of isaac aren't popular for being competetive or having a great story.

People like to rag on sonic (reasonable so) about the quality of their video games. HOWEVER, most current gen games face similar issues. They sell well because they have a marketable/known ip, rather than the quality of their product. Most games released by big corporations fall into this Sonic problem, but most consumers still buy them anyways. Patches promising fixes that never come, rabid fans afraid to admit their game is bad. Will the modern gaming climate ever address this problem, probably not

Pokémon has one of the best competitive entry points of any franchise due to its ability to create nostalgia with characters while also keeping the audience in with varied gameplay due to the vast amount of mons. Also, the existence of shiny hunting, nuzlocke, and multiple battle formats (OU, VGC, draft league etc...) allow for typical casual players to dip into the competitive scene. And the community for competitive Pokémon is much less toxic than FGC or smash. That being said, the story mode fucking sucks.

People *do* get bored of the same formula no matter how appealing it may seem at first. Nostalgia is constantly exploited by companies when they are trying to reviatlize a series. In my opinion, that usually goes poorly since the 'nostalgia-ized' new version of the game lets people down. Nostalgia is like looking through rose colored lenses, you can't see the red flags from your childhood favorite due to the fond memories. Revitalizing these games and relying on the nostalgia factor only ruins them and your memories. Sorry for the jumbled thoughts about this. HI CHAT.

A lot of times they are slow, boring, and don't make much sense at all in terms of story or gameplay. They boast long play times to try and keep users satisfied but most are so bad that you'll never reach the end and if you do it will be through much complaining and won't be worth it whatsoever.

I think all Pokemon games are boring because you just walk like in Death Stranding except every few minutes you get a random encounter that you don't want which is the equivalent of stepping in dog poop in real life. The only interesting things in terms of gameplay are watching the numbers go up when you level up your Pokemon, spending hours looking for a specific Pokemon that you want (like gambling, but you lose your time instead of your money), and fighting other trainers (which isn't even that fun because you just repeat the same attacks over and over again).

Sure, Mario dominates Sonic in the game quality AND quantity department, but Sonic is still nearly as recognized and revered in that context despite his shortcomings. The Smash community often fails to recognize just how amazing of a game smash is in favor of complaining about smaller details. The switch was not built for rollback netcode and would be far too demanding on the system, and while an official competitive smash scene would be awesome, it runs contrary to Nintendo’s family-friendly philosophy. We should instead be grateful that we have a fighting game that will almost certainly never be matched. Ultimate can be played casually or competitively, with unparalleled character variety and incredibly fun platform-fighter gameplay.

[Fact or Opinion] The next Mario Party shouldn't just be a turn-based board game. Why make a board game collection when your developers are getting burnt out from making like 15 in the span of 25 years. Make it a 4 player competitive 3D platformer. Combine the greatest 3D platforming with random events and maybe minigames every 2-3 minutes, for a unique party game no one else could make.

Submission: Fortnite was never that good of a game. It took what was ok about battle royales, made it for babies, and did their best to get people addicted. It only got worse when epic turned it into nothing but stealing characters from other media to make money off it. I feel personally attacked every time one of my favorite franchises (street fighter, terminator, tron, marvel, star wars, fnaf, ect.) gets added to this addictive cesspool of a cash grab.

People who complain that the word “literally” is used incorrectly too much don’t have an understanding of human language. Metroidvanias as a genre have a sickness. Whoever is developing them chronically has no respect for the players' time. When a core mechanic is backtracking that's already going to be testing a lot of people's patience, and yet every metroidvania loves to give you overly long death runs to make sure you play through this area for the fourth or fifth time when it stopped being fun after the second.

JRPG’s are the worst video game genre. The gameplay it either always turn-based or mashing buttons. Instead of actually having strategy, it’s just equipping a bunch of items in the hellscape that is the menus. The games are always super long but only because the first 20 hours are cutscenes and tutorials. Speaking of which, 95% of JRPG’s tutorials are just walls of text put in front of you. Nobody wants to read when playing a game. That’s what books are for.

In my opinion the Wii U was actually a good console and the reason it got such a negative response is less about the console being bad and more about it lacking creativity and new innovative functions like those that the wii brought to the table. I mean it did have some very interesting games and was just overall fun to use if seen from more of a mutual perspective and less in a way where you try and compare it to the wii, because truth be told, they are different and both good consoles. I wish you a nice day.

Too many people blame circumstances or another person for their short comings. “The match up sucked” or “my controller isn’t working.” I feel like this is starting to become more often and people need to become more proactive. People should learn that things that happen to you are most likely your fault, with some exceptions. If the match up is bad, it’s just going to be a lot of hard work and learning to win. Sadly some people aren’t cut out for this, and I think that’s what separates High/Top players from Mid/Low-High

Here's my hot take: Nintendo's rereleases (skyward sword at full price, mario 3d all-stars, etc.) aren't the horrible, scummy practices everyone keeps saying they are. People need to realize that video game companies aren't charities; they're businesses. Just because you don't want to pay for something (even though half the people complaining will buy it anyway), doesn't make it immoral.

Fighting Games as a whole are made for a very specific Demographic, one that enjoys hard labor and practice in order to see your hard work pay off, so that you can overcome an obstacle.for example in SFV when I practice trials with my main and study all the capabilities of my character, I'm able to go on ranked and dunk on Ryu and Akuma players with little to no issue, despite the fact that I was the one getting dunked on last week.

I disagree. It was Street fighter 2 that proved that fighting games could be for anyone, but with the caveat of what you mentioned: some people enjoy hard work Coney was on the money, and to further his point they are niche because fighting games adhere to one dimensional conventions. With shooters, mobas, rpgs there are different strands where there is something to enjoy between games in a specific genre. With fighting games, you could play samurai showdown or blaze blue, the experience isn't genuine For my money, I can take or leave a game like Fortnite, but there's no denying how well that game performed with Gears being Eric's prior crop. King of Fighters has at least 14 releases to date and that's their mainline series. It's as if they think we'll forget them if they don't keep it before us In the meantime, what did they do within the last two revisions to convince me that my hard work was bound to pay off? Ah yes, when I buy a PS5, that's when all my experience will roll over. Again, the issue is that developers are too afraid to break the mold. "Our clients are accustomed to a certain quality" So instead of showing people how _their game_ can be fun, they put it on the player to do the work, which might include enjoyment

The oversaturation of buzzwords on the internet is a direct correlation of not being able to hear someone’s point directly. Language and discussion only gets dumbed down and more difficult to understand since points are being fed to people in a quick-fire manner. Buzzwords seem to be the only way people can understand someone without any room for genuine thought in an atmosphere like Twitter, youtube comments, etc... and will lead younger generations to only be able to follow short bursts of yelling without much wiggle room for what an argument is meant to be. This type of short bickering back and forth will only lead to toxicity and misconstrued information and intention. I know language and communication can evolve, but this is a step in the wrong direction.

A lot of modern 3D platformers are bad because they distract from the central premise of the game. When I'm playing mario I want to jump around and use the full extent of my moveset, not turn into a tank and fight an annoying centipede mech. This is a problem with Odyssey of course but it's been happening for a while with several series. Sonic Adventure 2 for example is really good in the Sonic and Shadow levels but the rest of the characters have levels designed less around platforming and more around unique gimmicks. It's like game devs feel this urge to push the boundaries of what they can cram into a platformer, and I just think it's making the genre way worse because at that point why are you making a platformer if you're barely going to let me do any platforming.

twitch, streaming culture and social media are going to lead to a whole generation of kids not developing proper social skills, or having very distorted ideas of relationships, as the personal and interactive nature of streams/social media make the audience feel far "more friends" with content creators than they actually are. Other than mouse and keyboard, gyro controls are by far the best control scheme for shooters. This is one of those “bait but it’s not good enough to where it circles back around to being worth discussing” opinions. It’s too easily put to bed: what about any FromSoft game? Or what about: - Mother 3 - The good Final Fantasies (7 and imo the best, 9) - Chrono Trigger - The Metal Gear Solid games and (to a lesser degree but it’s still good) Rising - Ocarina and Majora’s Mask - Fallout: New Vegas (only New Vegas the others are narratively dogwater) Any of these more than make the case for why some games actually are worth playing for primarily their story.

I will never understand the complaints about the time investment and skill ceiling of fighting games. It has never been as serious of a problem in physical sports and I think there is a misconception amongst the casual gaming audience that in order to enjoy a video game, you have to play it. If you think about it, most people don't regularly play the sports they watch. They watch the sport, because they want to see a skillful performance. MLB pitchers throw 90 mph pitches with absurd precision because they've thrown a ball enough and trained their bodies enough to do so, but 10-year-olds will still pitch in their little league games knowing they'll never throw 90 mph nor throw precisely enough to deliberately throw over certain parts of the strike zone. Fighting game players practice the inputs of combos until the input pattern becomes thoughtless so they don't drop it in competition, and fucking adults will complain about having to memorize the combo when getting the muscle memory down for a combo to that degree takes at most, a month and that's only if you want executing the combo to be as automatic as breathing. What even more absurd is that practicing a fighting game is significantly more convenient and accessible than for most, if not all sports. For example, if you wanted to practice figure skating, you need the drive to the rink and pay for the ice time and maintenance every practice session. For every fighting game, you can just boot up your game, and go into practice mode in your own home without paying for anything. I genuinely think the people that hate fighting games either got destroyed by someone much better than them and write their experience off as the definitive fighting game experience, have an ego too fragile to handle losing to another person at anything, and/or are incapable of accepting the fact they are bad at fighting games and are too closed-minded to improve. Psychologically, I'm pretty sure losing in fighting games are harder because you don't have the option to share the loss with others like in team-based games. On the flip side, it feels much more rewarding to win, because you are the sole victor. I get that fighting games cater towards certain types of people and playing them is not everyone's cup of tea, but I don't think it means people can't enjoy watching them without playing them or that people have to make public announcements about how shitty fighting games can be. People don't do that with actual sports and when they do, it's usually in a joking manner.

Triple A games are nearing a point where regardless of budget, it will be far too unwieldy for develop. Currently, titles require 1000+ man studios working over 6+ years (with crunch) to create something impressive *and* fun, at which point standards have already moved on, and the entire thing needs to be overhauled to stack up. (Not to mention inherent issues with managing large teams). Many more AAA titles are gonnna end up like Cyberpunk with the trajectory things are going.
