It was so nice to see Nintendo adopt the simple “give the people what they want” attitude in real time over the course of the Switch’s life. We got PLENTY new and unexpected, but a lot of the time in the form of stuff we’d been begging for! Nothing has ever knocked me on my ass like seeing the words “Metroid 5” in a Nintendo Direct. If that air of satisfying surprise sticks around, Switch 2 might just beat out the Switch in the long run if they play their cards right.

So I do kinda like that the Switch 2 is just a new Switch? When it comes talking about new IPs, I’m not too worried about that. Imo it’s one of those things where you take the creativity from the console so the bottleneck creatively is the console itself, so you have to be a little more creative and daring when it comes to games to make something feel as fresh as Nintendo likes to. This is a net positive.

I think this is a really good take on the topic! I hope the April Switch 2 presentation is as long as the January 2017 Switch 1 presentation, so that we can really get a good look at the new first party games they have planned.
@mistermamamia20 сағат бұрын
I just hope that they make games with a little more... comfort. I feel like the switch 1's lineup for almost every game was designed to be pick and up and play, like they were scared to make something that wasn't as mass appeal as possible. And not pick and up and play in the 3ds or their other handhelds way really, more in the mobile game-y way. A lot of nintendo handheld games were very arcadey, action packed, brisk, get a lot of bang per minute kind of deals, and a lot of switch games feel extremely big, slow paced, and novelty based. It's like a phone game where what you've been doing for 30 minutes compared to what you've been doing for 30 hours, is basically the same thing. Getting a moon in Odyssey is the same as getting any other moon is the same as getting a shrine in zelda is the same as catching a pokemon in pokemon. At least pokemon was always that way though. Even the games that were shorter felt very very... made by new talent? It's hard to describe, but the way I feel about mario wonder is that it feels like every gimmick was made by a brand new team who's trying their hardest to make something cute and rushing it out to make sure it doesn't overstay it's welcome. That's a feeling I get with other switch game's too. But I guess what I'm saying is, I want to see some harder games that's ready to treat their audience to a challenge. I want switch 2 to know I had a switch 1, and isn't going to just give me the same library but bigger and even more bloated. That's why I really want to see Arms 2, then I'll know for sure they're on the ball about expanding their games with more action packed fundamentals.

Consequences of building a reputation for being the "unpredictable" series. Having a reputation at all makes you predictable lol. Though tbf, that reputation is a byproduct of Nintendo’s larger MO's for the DS, Wii, and Wii U. The series started life with simple initiative of establishing, learning, and playing as many videogames as quickly as possible in rapid succession. The series is at its best when the controls are at their simplest imo.

It isn't the first time that Nintendo decided to iterate, rather than innovate. Like, NES > SNES, N64 > Gamecube, Nintnedo DS > Nintendo 3DS et cetera. It is reasonable to expect the console _after_ the switch 2 to be more innovative, assuming nothing changes about how Nintendo's design philosophy over the probable 6-10 years the switch 2 will live for
@Jacks_game_room20 сағат бұрын
You really hit the nail on the head. IMO the future for Nintendo looks about as bright as it could realistically be. I don’t think such a straight forward switch 2 will restrict Nintendo’s creativity. The GameCube was a very basic system but still had plenty of creative games and accessories. I think the Wii U proved that while gimmicks can be exciting they also need a clear practical use to be worth a purchase.
@simplebutnotsolongname664215 сағат бұрын
Tbf, the GameCube is rather different in this regard because of the gaming landscape which it was in (polygons, graphical leaps, improved standard definition). And the GameCube didn’t inherit any distinguishable similarities with its predecessor, the N64, aside from the 4 controller ports. I think everyone expected Nintendo to keep in line with the Switch, just as they have with previous successful consoles (NES, Gameboy, DS, Wii). But it’s just that the reveal, and especially the name, just left a lot to be desired. And The Wii U in of itself is not bad, heck, I’d say the name wasn’t exactly bad either (believe me, they could do a lot worse like Xbox One). I really think the only thing to take away from Wii U was the incredibly Terrible Marketing and Lackluster launch; which killed all the momentum it could’ve had. Because even with all the “gimmicks”, you could still play games normally on the Wii U. Same with Wii (though games had to work around its set up).

People are underrating the mouse control because it was leaked, but that’s a legitimately big option to include. Certainly more useful than the 3D on 3DS or rumble on N64. Obviously it wasn’t shown off so there’s not much to say quite yet, but the people having discussions know it’s there. Especially surprising when so many people swear by gyro control for games like Splatoon. This could be more accurate than that.
@DontKnowDontCare6.96 сағат бұрын
The N64 rumble was very useful. If you werent born then (and it's obvious), the Rumble Pak made PS1's analog joyticks (Not Dual Shock) obsolete when Nintendo introduced it.
@mrshmuga95 сағат бұрын
@ “it’s obvious” I was there, I’m a 90’s kid, lol. I’m not saying it wasn’t a good feature, it did become ubiquitous after all. But it doesn’t change the way you play on the level of a new control method like the analogue stick(s), motion controls, or soon to be mouse control. It’s mostly a passive feature, outside the few games that might use it to hint at some invisible/nearby object. Haptic triggers are kind of an evolution of rumble, but more useful as the same button can be used for multiple inputs/states. Though as much as I like it, it’s more of a novelty than a revolution. A satisfying tactile feeling that could probably be replicated “well enough” by having a slight timer on the action (press vs. hold for X seconds), but I do enjoy it. I didn’t have a PS1, but an N64. So I didn’t feel the loss of having to replace a controller for a new feature, as it sounds like you might have dealt with.

Yea, I've been having a lot of these worries myself. Hopefully they can take the approach you're saying here in the video but I do worry for certain series since they did kind of hinge on control gimmicks, Wario Ware being my favorite in that regard. Good format for the video too, obviously I love the sock skits and I really do consider them higher quality than basically anyone else's skits working on this genre of video but simple thought pieces like this are also very enjoyable since I do think you have a better perspective than most people who make news-ie deep dives and analysis vids, even if they have a bigger audience/production. It’s funny to me people thinking Nintendo’s innovation era is over, is if this is the first time they have pulled this move. NES > SNES Gameboy > Gameboy Advanced DS > 3DS Wii > WiiU Were they always successful? No, but that’s because in the WiiU’s case they succeed at promoting it as a completely new console and not an accessory or add on that’s not necessary. But they did succeed with the likes of the DS to 3DS transition. Nintendo has done this before, and they’ve done it well. I’m happy as long as they fix the issues people always had with the system.

Excellent outlook on things. Like, is the name uncharacteristically safe and boring for Nintendo? Yes. But after Wii U did as poorly as it did commercially, I can’t exactly blame them for wisening up that clear, concise marketing is important to a healthy console’s life. And personally, I prefer a Nintendo where the console is more or less just a simple console. I love weird, wacky, fun loving Nintendo, but mostly in the games. It’s why the Switch is easily my favorite of their consoles- it’s just a regular video game console with most every game being just playable with regular buttons and controllers. And the wacky, fun stuff comes in with games. And thank you for not saying DK looked like the movie, but like the Yu Yamamoto art you showed in the side by side comparison. I can’t say I’m in love with the DK design yet, but I do think it has a lot of comical charm to it. And given DK’s my favorite character, this is a very important talking point for me. Also, should add if other people aren’t into it, totally fair. Just don’t think it looks remotely like the movie design.

About new IP this upcoming gen, i see what you mean. With Splatoon, ARMS and Ringfit i say being their trifecta of new hits lately, i think they'll just iterate on sequels with those as a safer bet. Probably moreso ARMS and Ringfit is my wild take though. I get Splatoon is the biggest of them but they made 2 sequels just for switch and as early as the 2nd one folks were expressing concern of stagnation from what ive seen of some of the sploon community. And i don't doubt the team behind it can't come up with a way to shake shid up if they so desire, but maybe after 2 in a row in one console gen they'd wanna do another project. Especially since we know you can play the switch titles on switch 2... Sutsu. ス2 lol. Maybe a spin off of some kind, but probably shouldn't expect sploon 4 till a good bit later is my guess. Meanwhile, ARMS and Ringfit have been out here as current standalones both for over half a decade now soon, and can offer a lot. ARMS has a whole host of cut ideas that would make for prime sequel additions as well as introducing new characters, mechanics and modes to spice up it's meta and keep casual players occupied. Meanwhile for Ringfit, they already got the ring-con made, why not im sure they'd wanna milk that revolutionary tech a bit more and safe to assume it'll also be su2 compatible. But yeah, far as any new major IP being introduced this gen, idk. They really focused on revivals the end of switch 1, i think they might keep that train going early on here. And i wouldn't complain one bit personally lol

Nintendo gave what their consumer base wants; a new and improved Switch! I can see why some people aren't that super excited with the trailer due to the leaks but I couldn't have asked for a better reveal. People who are depressed really need to get over the snowflake emotionalism LOL. The trailer is exactly what the Switch successor should be! The fact that it is still a Switch and that Nintendo didnt depart from the portable/dock feature but improved along with the physical and digital backward compatibility almost ensures success for this console. It's either Nintendo departs from what made the original Switch successful and you get excited and overwhelmed about the new gimmick but the console fails like the Wii U. Or Nintendo sticks with what made the original Switch successful and improve on it every 5-6 years with the Switch 3, Switch 4, Switch 5 etc and you get underwhelmed and cry like a dog due to the leaks or lack of gimmickry but the console sells even more than the original Switch. The new name 'Nintendo Switch 2', the new screen and joycons and the backwards compatibility is exactly what Nintendo needed to ensure success! And marketing for future consoles couldn't be much more easier and effective with 'Switch 3, Switch 4, Switch 5 ect etc! This is exactly what people were hoping for. The numerical way worked for Sony and it'll surely work for Nintendo as well. Nintendo do not want another WIi U failure which these critics obviously want. They want Nintendo to fail! Of course Nintendo will play it safe! Why destroy a proven formula? If it ain't broke DON'T FIX IT!! Nintendo can just focus on the joycons for new gimmickry if possible every 5-6 years to satisfy the entitled few as long as those joycons attaches to the screen. And it isn't the hardware that mainly sells the console. It's the games! And these will just get better and better in every new versions of the Switch! Don't pay much attention to the haters! Just enjoy their incoherent criticisms! Well done Nintendo! And whatever issues Switch 2 has that can't be fixed with patches etc will be fully resolved with the Switch 3 and whatever issues Switch 3 has will be resolved with the Switch 4. It will just get better and better! I don't have to worry about a Nintendo console failing to sell coz of a new, weird name and gimmick just to satisfy an entitled few! And the Switch is just the dream console if you're a physical collector who don't have much space in your home and is always on the go. It's portable/dock feature and size is too hard to resist! Especially now that Nintendo has officially decided to stick with the hybrid feature and will just improve on it is motivation enough to save money and pre-order it! Imagine having a Switch more powerful than a PS5 by the time Switch 3 or 4 comes out! All that visual and technical brilliance in the palm of your hands! Nintendo's got my bank account! Bring it on! 😂👍👏
