Do you have some video/link to something that shows this in practice? Just generally curious. I don’t go opening games often/ever, but want to know more about the topic.
@jevansturner5 жыл бұрын
Rig - Except in rare circumstances, most normal games don't have EPROM chips and it's not a concern. Prototypes and custom reproductions very often have them. Many (but certainly not all) developers practiced covering the window back in the day. Half of the prototypes out there have a foil label or white paper label over the EPROM's UV erasure window. My brother and I found a prototype Xexyz. Like many other prototypes, the erasure windows were covered and the build info was written on the labels. An opaque label would block stray UV light from entering. Stray UV light could theoretically flip some random bits, changing byte values and introducing corruption. It would usually require prolonged / concentrated UV exposure to fully erase the chip (as you would do before programming it again), so some people incorrectly believe there is no concern at all for leaving the window exposed. Someone may say "I never cover the windows and I've never had a problem," but it's certainly possible for momentary exposure to flip a bit. Why take the risk? A small corruption like a single flipped bit might never be obvious. It would probably remain perfectly playable. Or it might crash at a certain point / scenario much later in the game. Or it might not work at all. If the game seems to work fine with some small unknown corruption, and then someone dumps the game ROM a couple decades later, that person might incorrectly assume they have discovered a variant code revision - because a few bytes would be different after comparing with other dumps of this title.

Those are windowed eproms that will get erased if you leave them out of the cart too long without a label over the window. Should probably cover them up when opening. (edit: used EEPROM instead of EPROM in my comment, oops!)
@KelseyLewin5 жыл бұрын
You’re right! But the overhead lights from my shop for the three minutes it was open absolutely won’t erase them. It takes much more serious exposure than that, and I wasn’t about to put tape on the board as the serious buyers are (understandably) quite picky. It will likely never be opened again.
@bigendianian5 жыл бұрын
FYI for anyone taking one of these carts apart like this, those two chips with the little clear circular windows are EPROM (erasable programmable read-only memory) chips and are where the game software is stored. These chips are erased by exposing those windows to UV light, so be sure not to leave the uncovered PCB out for long or ambient UV light will eventually wipe them. Best to actually cover the windows with a bit of opaque tape. They can be rewritten with a special programmer but (1) you may lose a unique ROM images no-one else has, and (2) someone would need to desolder and re-solder the chips both potentially impacting the value of the cart.

Opening the cart before checking it for functionality? That's like the FIRST THING I learned about opening any kind of customer's hardware - plug it in and check it out first, lest you get blamed for breaking it. Literally the first thing my boss told me on the first hour of the first day at my job at a computer store in the mid 90s.
@kkjhn415 жыл бұрын
It wasn't being tested for a trade or in store credit it was being authenticated which requires more than just does it run. Most likely this cartridge will never be played, it's value is in it's history and collectability not in it's gameplay which is nothing really special. In fact putting a cartridge of this vintage into an equally old NES or some kind of clone (which are often known for their death grips) carries a risk in itself of damaging it unlike the low risk and completely necessary step of opening it up for authentication.

@@NoticeForBlue Electronically erasable PROMs were very expensive until recently, as they required another transistor or two on every cell to bring it low. The janky solution was to just expose the die. UV light ionizes a layer behind the quartz window which dissipates the charge in each cell. Chances are, this cartridge is very similar to a development cartridge, meaning it would need to be erasable to flash a new build of whatever game they were working on. Because electronically erasable PROMS (EEPROMS, two E’s. There is a difference.) were not economical, this is an easier solution. It is surprisingly uncomplicated for something that seems like black magic voodoo fuckery.
