I've never played a Shiren game, but I'm so starved for Pokemon Mystery Dungeon that I'll take anything. Maybe I'll try this one out!

There is a previous game in this series that is also currently on Switch if you want to try it out. It's been out for a bit so maybe you can find it on sale sometime. It's Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate.

If you have the chance before February, I'd recommend either checking out Shiren 1(DS remake) or emulating Shiren 2(N64) and applying the translation patch, as both serve as good introductions to the series.

Agreed. And if we're being specific. That may be in part that it's ae it's a "rouge". Not rougelike or lite. No punches are pulled it's brutally and at times unfairly random. At least the early ones and seemingly this new one. I've only played Shiren the Wanderer on DS. Which I believe is a remake of Shiren the Wanderer 2. Been meaning to play more of the series so the announcement is neat.

@@Daydreamer7070 The DS Shiren (the only one to be released in English, at least) is a remake of the Super Famicom Shiren, but it had some design changes that make it slightly less fun, in my book at least. It's still worth playing though.

@Mysticgamer the Wii game is a standalone title. It's not a remake. If you're asking about its quality, fans often say Shiren 3 is the worst game in the series for causalising it to a fault and focusing too much on story rather than gameplay

The last game in the series had a LOT of depth and new mechanics, and was also REALLY freaking hard (I got to the second final boss and he flattened me), so I don’t mind a “back to basics” entry with no Night Mode and the like. Stoked for a new entry in general!!

Yes, Shiren the wanderer games are developed by Spike Chunsoft, who indeed did all the pokemon mystery dungeons games as well.

@@NyxTheScary It's the same dev that made most of the Mystery Dungeon games, including the *six* Pokemon versions, and that's only if you lump together all the versions of Rescue Team and Explorers. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is, by far, the best-selling of the Mystery Dungeon games, none of them have sold less than a million copies.

Wow, I'm surprised this is getting a western release. Mystery Dungeon games other than the Pokemon ones are hardly ever talked about. Mystery Dungeon is the OG roguelike series, for those who don't know. Chunsoft (now Spike Chunsoft) has been churning these out for various series for over 30 years now. Shiren the Wanderer is the longest running of these series from what I can find, although nearly all of them have been Japan exclusive.

*Do you...* *...mind a more item-oriented approach to dungeon crawling?* *...mind it being (generally) more challenging than Pokémon Mystery Dungeon?* *...mind playing in a Japanese mythology / folk fantasy setting?* If you're saying yes to the above, give this series a go! 😁 Serpentcoil Island seems like it'll be great, but if you want to get started right away, here's some other suggestions: - _Tower of Fortune and Dice of Fate_ (on Steam/Switch/PSVita) i.e. _Shiren 5_ is officially in English and the latest release in the series. - _Shiren the Wanderer_ (on DS, it's a remake of the 1st Shiren game on SNES) i.e. _Shiren 1_ . I started on this one, it's simple and elegant, also officially released in English. - _Shiren 2_ (on N64) I hear is an awesome pick as well, Japan-only release, but there's a full fan translation patch you can download.

If you like bashing your head against a brick wall slowly improving, then definitely give it a shot.If you aren't a fan of losing then it may not be your cup of tea. The Shiren series is the definition of trial and error, and the story isn't that crazy so you definitely play for the gameplay. Id recommend it a ton as a big fan, but ye be warned of the difficulty

Just saw a spate of videos pop up about “oh no Roguelikes are in trouble”, and lookee here one of the OG’s dropping a new release next year. Plus there’s this lil thing called Hades 2 on the horizon. And that’s aside from the fact that trends come and go-doesn’t mean Roguelikes are going the way of the dinosaur altogether if they just fall out of fashion a bit.

I still have trauma from how hard Dice of Fate (PS Vita) was, I had to give up around the point where the "night time" mechanic starts. Shoutout to anybody who was on the gamefaqs forums back in those days. A shame to lose the beautiful pixel art, but perhaps this will attract new players to the series now that it's on a more popular platform.

I STILL play the original game to this day!!! One wrong move and you’re sent back to the beginning again. It was such an interesting game. It had a similar concept to the original Pokémon mystery dungeon game. I think a lot of people will like it with these new designs ❤️

@@MrSerpico145 All Mystery Dungeon is out of Spike Chunsoft, with the exception of the Chocobo games which are developed by Square Enix, so yes. While Shiren 6 probably uses a new engine(I say mostly since this game aimed to hit 60FPS and the DX engine was uh... unstable.) controls will likely be similar yeah

YESSSS. The roguelike for masochists returns to the US. Not a masochist, but it is SO satisfying to get further in this game due to its difficulty. ........ "The Dark Souls of Mystery Dungeon Roguelikes" :P ... except it's far older than Dark Souls. So technically, Dark Souls is "The Shiren the Wanderer of Adveture Roguelikes".

They're actually part of the franchise and made by the same devs. It's like the Musou/Warriors games, that has their original series (Dynasty Warriors/Sangoku Musou) but also have collabs with different IPs like Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors.

IIRC, the DS game is a port of the first Shiren game, but that one was the second Mystery Dungeon. The very first one was a Dragon Quest spin-off, and it explains why a lot of Shiren monsters look like DQ expies (Slimes to Mamels, and so on...)
