My game design professor always told me you can learn a lot more about game design from playing bad games than playing good ones. This game has all the classic hallmarks of a game from this era in terms of cutting corners on design. The first level seems like it got all the attention, while the second and forth levels look like Bart is on drugs. There is SO much inconsistency in terms of what you can and can't jump on, they love these secrets where you just jump on something random and something random happens, and theres just so many situations where it is completely unclear what you are supposed to do, and the solution is completely unintuitive, something the player NEVER would have guessed on their own. Also, they keep rewarding you with coins long after they have any use, since you only seem to be able to spend them in the first level. And not at the mall....which would actually make sense. Every single boss is a dude who throws something at you, with pretty much no variation except I guess Sideshow Bob. The final level, instead of being a proper puzzle, crutches on how cumbersome they made getting between the floors as the main obstacle rather than something more clever. I had this game as a kid. I could never get past the first level. But I always felt smart when I figured out one of the weird solutions to some of the problems, like using the payphone to call Moe's. I remember asking my mom about all the different joke names and she wouldn't explain them, so it took years before I finally got it, ha ha.
@Dorian_Scott4 жыл бұрын
I can agree with your professor in this case. I *_really_* hate this game. The graphics, cover art, and 8-bit theme song are fine. But the monotonous gameplay, the droning original music, and that horrid control just make for another game cartridge to destroy.
@NintendoComplete4 жыл бұрын
I can agree there. Pretty much everything wrong with the game can be traced back to the lack of a consistent design and a concrete ruleset. And yeah, those ledges in the tar pit exhibit were merciless. The coins do serve another purpose, though. You get extra lives for collecting them. I think it awards one per 14 or 15 coins? I can't remember the exact number.
@plawson857711 ай бұрын
@@NintendoComplete Acclaim hyped this game like Crazy because they had secured a Licensing deal with Fox when Simpsons was barely a year old. In ‘90, it was a NEW IP. VERY late reply, but I must agree with you here. A remake will help this game A LOT, not just on the controls (I´ve played this game in the distant past, and those controls were a veritable struggle) but also some bizarre and rather outdated (even for the time) design choices (maps for the more labyrinth-esque levels, improved graphics, some way to at least defend yourself, more streamlined levels, etc.)

Back then beating the same game 5 times was enough to put it down cuz you got tired of it. Since a child i loved very difficult games and would never stop coming back till i beat em, the wonder thats left to the imagination of whats still there gave incentive. Losing cables, new tvs that needed additional plugs, is the reason i moved on from nes and snes without beating Dick Tracy, Bart Vs The World, The Ninja Turtles( wit the underwater level) Jurassic Park, Adventures Of Bayou Billy, Batman..mind you i was 3, 4 and 5 playin these with limited time and brain power lol.

Why did the sega version make the aliens look so different? I actually preferred this version as some elements looked waaaay better. than the others. One of the few games I could play from start to finish, good times.
