I beat this game so many times as a kid, that fourth level always blew my mind with it's amazing space background and the big beam slicing a chunk out of the space habitat.

Super EDF never really stood a chance at competing with all the big name shooters released around the same time, but it was still a fun little shooter. It wasn't Gradius III, but it certainly wouldn't have disappointed on Christmas morning either.

Despite my first time playing this game was "throw the controller at the screen" hard, I admit the music and the level of details in the backgrounds really take the cake here.

The problem is that the original was actually very good, but the port suffered the conversion. It may have more colour on level 1 but other than that... The weapons are awfully weak, making it seems as if you had a choice, but only one or two actually do a minimally acceptable damage And the sound... Man! Makes me wish it would've been ported to Genesis instead.

I think this title has aged better than some of the other second-tier titles. I remember having a similar reaction to it when it released - I already had the top-tier shooters, and even after I rented it, it didn't capture my imagination. But it was the memory of the music and the color changes in the first level that brought me back to it in emulation. And there I discovered a new appreciation for the enemy types and the little graphical effects that do kind of set it apart. And the ending is kind of nice, too. It's still not as good as R-Type III or U.N. Squadron, but I think it stands up better than Phalanx (whose terrible choice of bullet color ruin the experience for me). I think of it as a kind of "guilty pleasure." On paper it really shouldn't be all that enjoyable, but I still like it enough that I picked it up on the Wii U VC and enjoy running through it every so often.

and for anyone wondering, no this game has nothing to do with EDF the third person shooter. I guess Jaleco didn't want to pursue copyright with this game.

Main problem I see with this game is that it takes the fourth level to show more personality, even in the visuals; also because by then the weapons have become decently powered, it feels honestly quite a bit boring beforehand. That monster that chases you as it spits brains is an unexpected surprise of a final boss at least.

Word of advice. Never go into the final level with homing. Seems to be deliberately built to be against that

I like the homing weapon the most. In my humble opinion the boss of stage 4 is the hardest one. Especially in his first phase.

Just beat this last night. Plenty challenging but not impossible to master, especially once you figure out which weapons to use. Underrated shmup on the SNES!

I'm currently playing it on my Nintendo switch, and the level after that one is my favorite... I guess it's called premonition, the best weapon is indeed atomic or grenade with the drones in hunter formation.

Fun game until I got to the last boss which was just not well designed. Could barely see anything and the only way to beat them was to retry the level with the weapon this video uses because it auto attaches to the boss which dealt 10 times the dmg of the s laser I was using until then

The second to last boss on the final stage would like to have a word with you. That black electric sphere that orbits that boss in particular for some reason becomes the target for the homing blasts...and you can't destroy it either
@Brahma001 Жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly you could also damage enemies with the Circling Satelites around you. This mode was pretty bad for the homing Skill. You should use that without Satelites Orbiting you. But I havent played it since my childhood :D

Will Nintendo and its licensees paint themselves into corner by prefixing every SNES title with the word "Super"? What happens when the successor to the SNES comes along? Will we have Super Duper Earth Defense Force? Wait and see! Till then, we'll just have to make do with regular Super Earth Defense Force, which isn't such as horrible fate. In fact, SEDF is tremendously arcadelike and is in almost every what state-of-the-art.

This game was always average. Even when it came out. It's fun enough to play through a few times and try out all the different weapons and those drone configuration but after that there's nothing left to the game. The leveling gimmick is shallow and as shown here you max out early. I never cared about high scores or points myself but I guess there's that if that's your thing.

a pretty generic shooter, just barely makes my Top 20 shmup on the SNES, as with many of the lesser shmups on the SNES, it has bouts of slowdown

Meh. Another Gradius clone with no personality or defining features of its own whatsoever. But that's exactly why it's special! I rather enjoy this game for two reasons. 1. It was made in the 90s. 2. It has a campy charm that reminds me of other mediocre games like OverBlood or Awesome Possum.
