Contra III was developed by Konami with a team led by Nobuya Nakazato. Although this was Nakazato's third year at Konami, Contra III is the first Contra game he worked on, having only previously done informal playtesting for Super C (1990). He believed the original arcade version of Contra (1987) was difficult to play because of its vertical screen, but he did enjoy the Famicom port. Nakazato's team worked in Konami's new offices in Tokyo, seated next to the arcade team that had developed Contra. Nakazato shared progress on Contra III with the arcade team and received positive feedback. In early coverage, the game was known as Contra IV. Nintendo Power reported the name change to Contra III: The Alien Wars in its coverage of Winter CES in 1992. Nakazato believed Contra had a low-budget movie theme. To emphasize this, he asked the sound team to change the music as the stages progressed to give a cinematic style. He also believed the action in earlier Contra games is too realistic, so for Contra III he wanted to include more comical elements. He was concerned the change may upset series fans, but believed it would be more entertaining. One scene added to accomplish this is a sequence where the player hangs from flying missiles. This strains the Super NES's sprite capabilities, so the team used background tiles to draw the helicopter and missiles in the scene. Making the graphics appear to move like sprites in the foreground required clever programming tricks. The Super NES allowed for "raster scrolling", which allowed the programmers to change the graphics for each scanline. The programmers shifted the vertical sync and cut off the sprites at the scanline. The restriction is that graphics can only move horizontally along the scanline to achieve the illusion that they are actually sprites in the foreground. Nakazato was concerned the traditional pattern of weak enemies followed by a boss fight was becoming mundane and did not want players to feel "in for the long haul" every play session. To combat this, he established a key concept for something interesting to happen every three screen scrolls. This made the game content feel more dense and gave it a "boss rush" type feel. Nakazato believed Contra III's fast-paced action was going against the trend of home console games shifting to slow-paced strategy and role-playing games, and is good for quick-starting stress relief. Contra III was released in Japan on February 28, 1992, and North America on March 26 of that year.

The SNES is incredible hardware, and that is one hell of a developer. They don't make 'em like this anymore. Most will do the bare minimum and port a game with as little effort and budget put into it. You can tell Contra 3 was a true labor of love, and dedication to this profession.

This game is a masterpiece. Everything in it is excellent. It is the best Contra game I ever played. To the people who say Hard Corps is better, I say b***, please. The soundtrack is the one with most "epicness" released on the SNES, and the 4th stage is the most action packed stage in the history of videogames, since you start shooting at enemies on a motorcycle, jump to a helicopter and finish on a freaking rocket going after the last ones getting away. If the 90's was the decade of things "extreme", Contra III is the game that defines that decade.

@AltairEgo16 ай бұрын
I don't know what all the hype was about before. For a few years we had everyone saying "Hardcorps good, Contra III bad, me no like mode 7". Now people are coming around again after playing more Contra games, and realizing that Hardcorps core gameplay and level design is not particularly comparable to standard Contra gameplay loops. So those who really liked the platforming, meatier levels, and not having aim lock that needs to be toggled off, probably came back to Hardcorps and realized, it's not much of a Contra game at all. It's its own thing. Nothing wrong with that, but I want the classic Contra experience. If I want a game with only boss battles, I'll play Chaos Field. But yeah, Blazing Chrome is everything Hardcorps should have been. If it had been designed like that, I'd be more inclined to say it's on the same level as Contra 3. Because Blazing Chrome was an incredible game. Weapons, the controls and movesets. Not having to play it on a 6 faced controller with no shoulder buttons, the graphics, music, everything in it is awesome.

I love how you can switch 2 weapons *2 spread guns baby 😎😎* the music is honestly my personal favorite on the snes, all of it was original music *the final stage in particular 😍 what a way to end things with a bang* the controls are tight and responsive from running to even jump and shoot both of your weapons, plus the line "let's attack aggressively" never left my mind 😍🙏 I say this is was a great start point for me, contra and super c on nes are great, but contra 3 i feel rises up next to next to them, weird however there is no konami code here *thank goodness for farming spots to rack up on lives*

Contra and Super C on the NES and Contra III on SNES are shooter genre perfection! The 2-player cooperative gameplay was a game changer, too. Contra Hard Corps on Sega Genesis was also a worthy installment in the series. Sadly, the subsequent Contra games on the more powerful systems after the 16-bit era fell short in my opinion. If they just stuck to the proven Contra formula & suped-up the graphics these next gen systems were capable of, it would've been great.

The Jungle stage kind of ruins it for me, especially that boss you chase down a corridor, having to avoid it for so long before you can finally damage it. Drags down the pacing of a game that otherwise blazes by (Stage 1 set the tone that should've been the entire game). The story also became more anime like, considering the first 3 games prior, Contra, Super C, and Contra III seem more film like in how they were presented. Otherwise as someone who owns both Contra 3 and Hard Corp, both are a nice challenge, but can be quite the bear for more inexperienced players, especially those that don't know about Hard Corps slide move that will save their life more often than not.

The toughest part in Hard mode for this boss is that it can continue to move vertically up and down to home in on you when its moving in with its drills. It can't do this in lower difficulties, if I recall correctly. It requires a lot more planning in where to climb to determine a safe spot since you need to account for all the extra space.
