The final-final boss of the NES version has some of the best music/fight scenes in a beat em up I've ever seen, sucks the original arcade cabinet didn't have that, and it really makes me appreciate the NES version even more

You guys, I love the PC Engine version. It took the NES version even further. There's something magic about the NES version music and speed though. BUT geez, There's just something amazing about hearing billy scream when you get the bad ending, then the epic 80s keyboard synth title music place when credits roll. Seeing Marion as a ghost. I don't know it is epic. too epic.

What happened to this game? The first Double Dragon on the Genesis was fantastic. It looked so close to the arcades it was crazy. The only issue it had was the music was a bit...grating but it was an arcade close version of Double Dragon you could play in the home with two players. I don't know what I'm looking at here but if you ask me the Nes port is more appealing. The music is the lone bright spot in this mess and I'm very happy I chose not to get this game when it was new. Although being honest, I never once saw it in stores but just the same I dodged a bullet.

I can go back and play Double Dragon 2 and 3 on the NES anytime and still enjoy myself. The Genesis ports of the arcade versions of Double Dragon 2 and 3 were borderline unplayable for me due to awful hit detection.

Not just that, but the enemy followed you around perfectly, it was hard to get into position to hit them,especially when there were multiple on the screen. They'd follow any movement you made to a tee, and quickly too.

My complaint with the arcade version isn’t the aged beat’em up mechanics. It’s just the AI is very cheap. Like fighting the second boss is terrible every time you fight him. He just shoulder charges when you get up or when you try to jump kick

Late reply Ik, but this is based on the original arcade version, after you killed the shadow warrior, there is no shadow boss (by which it only appeared in the nes and pc engine version), the game just ends saying you did it you avenged Marian.

What was up with how your girlfriend at the beginning there was just so haphazardly shown getting shot to death, although I remember the NES version having a more dramatic off-screen death of her instead, in cutscene form. C'mon Genesis people, the Genesis is more powerful than NES, why drop the ball there? Oh, well. It just goes to show quality over presentation I guess.

To be fair, the now-defunct Technos had nothing to do with this port of Double Dragon 2. It was done by a company known as Palsoft.

I Never knew this game existed on Genesis until KZbin. No one ever had this, it must have been that difficult to come by. Why didn't he just shoot the Lees too? Why not just wait until they come out and ambush them? Rig their car with or garage door opener with a bomb or something. Yeah, I know, there wouldn't be a game if it made sense. :)

An improvement over the first DD, though again I'd rather play the NES. PC Engine CD, and arcade versions over this one. The sounds and music, outside of defeated enemies "puking" on the ground, are much easier on the ears than the first DD on this console.

The super knee wasn't in the arcade or mega drive versions. Otherwise I'm sure he would have utilized it being as effective as it was in the nes and a couple of other ports.

Yeah, very true. Imo, the best 90s direct conversion of the original is on the Lynx. It's way too zoomed in, but the gameplay is good.

To be honest though, all of the major console ports had flaws. Some minor, some major. NES: Leveling up system, platforming, no continues SMS: Flickering, Hit detection can be questionable at times Genesis: Unresponsive Controls Lynx: Camera is way too close to you Gameboy: Platforming (although not as much as the nes version), gameplay feels sluggish Game Gear: In the words of jontron: WHO LOOKED AT THIS AND THOUGHT IT WAS OKAY?!

MalMal 21 I agree, none of them were perfect, but some were much farther from perfection than others. I was just meaning the ones that attempted to be like the arcade one without big changes, but I hear what you're saying. I personally loved the NES version. It was my favorite of all of them. I'm not that familiar with the SMS version. I''ll go and try it out again. Who knows, maybe I just didnt give it a fair shot. Haha what, you don't like running around with a pistol? The GG version was pretty wtf for sure. It seems like they took a totally random game and struck the Double Dragon logo on it. It looked really good though, especially for GG. Thinking back, its amazing how poor so many DD games there were. You'd expect better for a series that gets as much respect as it does. Double Dragon Advance was awesome though. Not really in the running with these other versions since it's a good 15 years newer, but excellent game either way.

I agree, double dragon advance was by far the best version, as they pulled out all the stops with that game. And yeah, I honestly think that the game gear version was meant to be a completely different game, but at the last minute they just slapped the double dragon logo on it. The sad part is, it doesn’t even play well. I actually wanted to like that game for its music and graphics, but the hit detection has a mind of its own, the animation is very choppy, and the AI constantly gangs up on you. They honestly should’ve just ported the master system version to the game gear. The nes version isn’t a bad game by any means, it’s just very difficult as it has platforming, and all you get is three lives. Plus, what were they thinking with mode B? They should’ve just stuck to the ACTUAL co-op mode, hence the name *Double* Dragon

I always loved the soundtrack, I even recorded it to a cassette. The last boss music is truly amazing even today. But the rest of the game is just not good enough for Sega, it looks like a "HD texture pack" for the first game, which only made it much slower and less enjoyable...

The redesign of level 2 is what the arcade game should have had. A stroke of genius on the developer's part there, but the rest of the game is awful. It looks like a Master System game, and not a great one at that.

This game Sucks, the control is annoying as hell, your guy always kicks in the opposite direction you want him to kick or he jumps or sometimes it will punch the direction you push the D-Pad, other times it will kick in the opposite direction, plus even on easy it's way to damn hard.

Man, this looks painful to play! You can, by just watching, tell the gameplay is indeed piss-poor, and collision detection is woeful. Crappy collision detection is just what you need in a beat 'em up! Still, I bet there are times when that falls in your favour; an enemy 'hits' you but it doesn't register. But that doesn't make up for the many, many times it works against you! Best kept in Japan, I think!
