A playthrough of Konami's 1991 shoot 'em up for the Super Nintendo, Gradius III.
Played through on the hard difficulty level.
The Super NES game Gradius III poses an interesting conundrum for fans of the arcade game. While it is a very good game, it is not the same game as the 1989 arcade title that shares its name. It's largely based on the arcade game - many of the stage's themes are the same, and the graphics and sound on the SNES are close (though somewhat improved) compared to the original coin-op.
I will say, though, that I really dislike the arcade game. It's a solid game mechanically, but I don't recall ever playing a harder Konami game. It's hard enough to make it, in my personal experience, absolute misery to play. It might just be that I lack the chops to play it well, but I find it ultimately far too difficult to find it fun.
The SNES game, however, is a bit more reasonable, and a much better game as a result. Note that I use reasonable as a relative term here: even on the SNES, Gradius III is an exceptionally difficult game. I can't say that I've ever managed to beat it on the hidden arcade difficulty setting, and it can be totally brutal when you die at certain checkpoints since you lose all of your upgrades when you're wiped out.
It looks and sounds excellent, and it really left a huge impression on me when it came out just days after the US SNES launch. It leaves the NES Gradius games choking in its dust as far as the presentation goes, and thanks to improved use of color and an upgraded soundtrack, it was quite a showpiece for the console in 1991.
One stage is missing and a new stage has been added, and the rest of the stages have seen some heavy changes in the translation to the console. While this approach led many (especially in Japan) to decry Konami's claims that it was a faithful recreation of the original, the changes do make it a better game. Level layouts are a bit easier to navigate, some new weapons were added, and the SNES game allows you to continue from a game over (which was a huge boon), all while it retains the classic Gradius feel.
Of course, not everything came out smelling like roses. The biggest criticism the game tends to receive us about its performance. Like many early SNES games, it suffers from the developers' lack of familiarity with the new platform. Just like Super R-Type, Gradius III often suffers from some excruciating bouts of slowdown when too much happens on-screen at once. It does make some of the more difficult spots easier to handle, but it also means that you can easily run into a wall if the game suddenly speeds back up when you aren't expecting it to. Like Super R-Type, you can get around this with a lot of practice, but it does leave an ugly stain on what is otherwise an excellent shooter.
Thankfully Konami's team was a quick study, and their other SNES shooters (check out Axelay or Parodius!) didn't suffer the same way once they'd gotten some experience under their belts. It doesn't ruin the game, but it does prevent it from being the classic that it should have been. That being said, I would take this one over the arcade version any day of the week.
What do you guys think? Is the compromised speed a worthwhile trade-off for a more reasonable difficulty level and the other changes made? I'm curious as to what you guys think.

Played this so much in my early teenage years. I would hurry up getting ready for school so that I had extra time to play games, and for like a year straight I would always choose to play this. The music always helped calm my nerves before having to head off to school. Love this soundtrack! That damned speed level would always get me though, haha! I miss playing games like this where you could replay them over and over, and just practice until you could beat it with your eyes closed. I did the same thing with Contra, Castlevania, and Star Fox 64. They all just never got old, and watching this video really took me back to when I had this game down pat.

Nowt wrong with the arcade version of Gradius 3 it was just the hardcore that wanted a harder game and the casuals couldn't take it. That said I never did finish it only made it half way through stage 10. And the arcade version has the best sound track of any video game ever.

This is my favorite SNES game and my favorite Gradius. I used to run through Arcade difficulty on a regular basis on my old SNES (there’s one weapon edit combo that is insanely OP) when I was a teenager. I also had Super R-Type and U.N. Squadron. As much as I loved those games I just loved everything about Gradius III. It’s the music and sound effects. The SNES was the first system I ever got to properly plug into a stereo receiver, and hearing those tunes with their stereo effects and those big, chunky, multi-channel boss explosions was a revelation. It never got old! Even with the slowdown I think this is a phenomenal game. If you’re just getting into shmups, start it on easy and work your way up. Find a weapon combo that works and use the slowdown to learn the stages and enemy patterns. I had Gradius and Life Force on my NES age regularly played both right up until I sold it to buy an SNES. Gradius III was the game I was most looking forward to, moreso even than Super Mario World. I love that each stage has its own personality defined by colors, music, and enemies. That’s the way it should be in a shmup. And the ending! Absolutely perfect. I’m so pumped that you are finally posting a playthrough.

There's also a patch for this game that removes all slowdown from the game. I've not tried the patch myself (I only do ips files for patching, these other ones seem alien to me to try), but going from videos, it ups the games difficulty a bit more. And I'll be that guy that prefers the arcade version over the SNES version (I have two SNES copies, and the PS2 and PSP Gradius collections), unlike Parodius, where I liked both equally, and the SFC version even added an extra stage with the Bath House level.

Considering that recently Konami had released some Anniversary Collections of its games (such as Contra and Castlevania), it would be nice if it makes one Anniversary Collection for Gradius that might include the first two arcade games (even though those two are already available in the Arcade Classics collection, but still...), the NES version of Gradius, the Famicom version of 2, THIS VERSION OF 3 (THE SNES VERSION AND NOT THE CRAPPY-ASS ARCADE ONE), the Gradius games for Game Boy and maybe Life Force for NES. That kinda proves that Konami is slowly pulling its head out of its ass with all that Pachinko bullcrap and that horrendous bastardization of one of its most beloved franchises known as Metal Gear Survive... but it's still a looong way to go for them to make a real comeback...

IF YOU HAVE CALLED GRADIUS 3 ARCADE CRAPPY-ASS JUST FOR THE PAINFUL DIFFICULTY, YOU ARE TOTALLY A JERKASS! Gradius 3 Arcade is one of the great Gradius game made and i played so far. They didn't wanted to make the game painfully hard on purpose. But because it came out in a year, 1989, where game's operators keep putting pressure on developers because they wanted their game, extremely hard. Same for the original 1P Fire Shark JP version. So, do the favor of not call it crap-ass. Would you like it if i called Gradius 3 SNES, a DIRTY REBOOT OF GRADIUS 2? At least Gradius 3 AC tries to being a new game with new features and enviroments to offer. Gradius 3 SNES just took away many of the new features that the arcade version offers and replace them with the many from Gradius 2 AC, making him a reboot of Gradius 2 that takes the name of Gradius 3. Pathetic. I prefer play Gradius 2 AC rather than this imperfect port.
