A playthrough of Hi Tech Expressions' 1989 game for the NES, Sesame Street ABC.
1:37 Letter Go Round
10:10 Ernie's Big Splash
Here's a title that I imagine many of you guys have some fond memories of. It was the second of a pair of Sesame Street games developed by Rare, Ltd. for the NES - the other was Sesame Street 123, release some nine months later. Both were rereleased on an official compilation cart, Sesame Street ABC & 123, in 1991.
So, if Hi Tech's badge upon the cart doesn't inspire confidence, you can take comfort in known that it is a Rare product from top-to-bottom. Sure it's a kid's game, but the graphics and music are absolutely brilliant here. The music WILL stick in your head forever - I played this with my little sister WAY back (89 or 90, I'm guessing) when she was getting ready to go into kindergarten, and I still know every damn song in the game by heart. The animation is also pretty amazing, given its age and the hardware it's running on. Rare really seemed to master and genre they handled - even if its 128k ROM leaves it a bit light on content, it's all quality.
Letter-Go-Round is a simple letter recognition/simple word spelling game set in a theme park, and when you win Big Bird or Ernie and Cookie Monster come out of the tent and dance for you before a firework show. In Ernie's Big Splash, you play a simple logic game that resembles Pipe Dreams, guiding a rubber ducky to Ernie who sits waiting in the bathtub.
Obviously it's not got quite the appeal when you already know your ABCs and can arrange shapes, but for little kids it's perfect, and for adults who played this as little kids, it's a game that is exactly as you remember it. And that's a good thing.
