A playthrough of Electro Brain's 1990 license-based action game for the NES, Puss 'n Boots: Pero's Great Adventure.
Based on Toei Animation’s 1976 anime film Puss ‘n Boots: Around the World in 80 Days, which was in turn based on the novel Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne, Puss ‘n Boots: Pero’s Great Adventure sets Pero on a platforming adventure across the world and time.
In this North American-exclusive sequel to the 1986 Famicom game Nagagutu wo haita Neko Sekaiishuu 80 Nichi Daibouken (長靴をはいた猫 世界一周80日大冒険, lit. The Cat in Boots: The 80 Day Adventure Around the World), Count Gruemon, a humanoid pig, orders the puss to kill a mouse that he finds in his castle. Pero, being friendly with said mouse, refuses and sets the critter free. The Count becomes so consumed with rage that, with help of the wolf-scientist Dr. Gari-gari, exiles Pero to the past, and because Pero broke the law of the Cat Kingdom, assassins are after him. Pero now has to search the world for Gruemon and Gari-gari, defeat them, and use their time machine to find his way back home.
Pero’s Great Adventure takes place across seven stages in which Pero must fend off cats in period costumes, mechanized sea life, hopping pirate ships, and more. Stages periodically offer changes to the core gameplay to keep play fresh over the course of the adventure - he takes a ride in a submarine, crosses a desert in a car, flies over the mountains in a biplane - and all of this leads up to the final battle set in a maze in New York City.
The game targets the same young crowd as the movie. The graphics, though a bit stiff and badly dated for a 1990 release, are colorful and full of cute little touches, and the difficulty level is kept extremely low, the tricky last boss fight aside. Anyone with fully developed motor skills will probably be able to blow through the game in an afternoon without much trouble.
One interesting thing to note: the music was composed by Mitsuyasu Tomohisa of J-Walk, a group that became a one-hit wonder group on the Japanese charts with their single "Nanimo ienakute...natsu" (lit. I Can’t Say Anything… Summer) in 1991.
Puss ‘n Boots: Pero’s Great Adventure is a breezy, short, and thoughly forgettable kids' game. It's not a bad choice if you're looking to stress-free way to burn a half-hour, but you could do much better.

Puss n Boots isn't bad for a game so firmly aimed at the kiddie crowd, but there isn't a whole lot to it.

Most certainly was for 5-6 year olds. I remember beating this at 6 years old. Was the first game I ever beat (I think)

Man this takes me back to almost pre-memory. But, I do recall my mom renting this for us just because it was new and it being very appealing. Years before we knew what even "Japanimation" was and even longer before we started calling it anime I knew I liked this style. This was one of if not the first game I can remember recognizing that, which I didn't even have a name for yet. Ah to be young (and without the internet) again!

I never saw this game before, but have heard of it! Despite the target is the "kiddos" age group, the simplicity of this game is kinda satisfying and comforting. If this was a book, it would be a comfort read or a cozy mystery! 😊

I love how closely the game follows the original story! They even included Puss's many air battles and his visit to the Statue of Liberty!

BEFORE Shrek and it’s many sequels as well as a Spin-Off called Puss-N’-Boots, this was the original Puss-N’-Boots movie, until eventually the Shrek Franchise took off in the year 2001 after heavily changing the original partially lost to time Chris Farley Cut, and then TOEI saw the DreamWorks interpretation of Puss-N’-Boots as a character and said: „You know what, DreamWorks? You look like you know what you are doing with that Shrek franchise of yours, we’re giving you the permission to make a spin-off of Shrek that focuses on Puss-N’-Boots as a character, so that you can have your own movie adaptation of the story of Puss-N’-Boots. Here’s the deed to character adaptation rights.”.

Someone should hack this game to add the likenesses of Shrek and Donkey as well as Kitty Softpaws and change the text on the title screen that says “TOEI Animation” to say “DreamWorks Ltd.”. Then it would be a DreamWorks game.

The boss progression was confusing when I played this as a little kid - mechanical frog, GIANT BLUE DEMON WITH SWORD, mechanical snake. Demon boss did have a boppy little BGM though, haha.

As a weeb, I have a fondness for Toei Animation. Particularly, the cutscenes for Sonic CD, Sailor Moon, the obscure Dr. Slump and the even *MORE* obscure Ghost Sweeper Mikami. I am not too familiar with Pero, though, aside this NES game.

The only good thing about this game is that it was adapted as an episode of Captain N. Which, of course, made it the ONLY episode that was adapted FROM an adaption, and animated by a different anime firm than Toei to boot. Making it basically a legal ripoff of the Toei movie that managed to get away with it because Captain N was never dubbed or aired in Japan. And they even used the game over music for the background score, which appeared in another episode.

I remember that episode. Too bad no one ever tried to capitalize on that story. With everyone going “nostalgia” today the idea of a cat lost in time for saving a mouse and trying to get back home could make for a good anime.

Yeah, DUH, off course this isn’t based on the Shrek spin-off called Puss-N’-Boots, This Game is from the 80’s, and Shrek was released in 2001. Many years have passed from the release of this TOEI Animation Game to the release of Shrek. One was made in the 80’s, the other was made in the 2000’s. This is long before Shrek started as a franchise.
