Remember seeing this in EGM and Gamepro all those years ago, laughed because it looked like a poor effort at CV, along with Contra Hard Corp. My cousin needed my help one day to defeat the Gargoyle boss on the Leaning Tower, beat it, no sweat, but something inside of me said, hey, it's pretty freaking good. Few years later, bought a Genesis (1998), my first 2 games for the system, Castlevania Bloodlines, and Contra Hard Corp (which I took a gamble on, but it paid off due to how good it was too). I never laughed at those 2 games again, I loved them. The EGM magazine's pictures didn't paint a picture on how good the games were.
@TGMShoNuff6 жыл бұрын
Because EGM were known at the time for not taking their gaming serious. They were a bit narcissistic with their reviews and also biased. They laughed hard at Contra: Hard Corps because they felt it wasn't a "true Contra title" (Dan Shu, I believe, wrote that). The staff at that time were: Dan Shu Crispin Boyer Shawn Sushi X
@TGMShoNuff6 жыл бұрын
It was made by the same company that created Contra.... That would be entitlement for the developer to do to deviate from their usual formula. They've made breakout hits on NES, Gameboy, SuperNES, and they've produced something different. No, just a simulated effect. If you look closely, you'll notice the tower is split horizontally in thick lines. The trick is that they move each line left and right in different times, giving the illusion that the tower is tilting. The effect looks better on a CRT TV though. BTW, the first boss of Contra: Hard Corps used the same trick, but with vertical lines instead. Looks hideous. :p

@marcsm20086 жыл бұрын
@@haircafekevin Yeah. Honestly, most action-packed games on the Sega Genesis were faster than their Snes counterparts. I always had a huge respect for the Sega Genesis. Still do. It was always amazing to see what companies could squeeze out of the limited hardware of the console. In fact, the Sega Genesis even had a faster CPU than the Snes, and many companies took advantage of this. Even games that got released on both consoles usually ran faster (and with a better framerate) on the Genesis. The Strike games, for example (Desert Strike, Jungle Strike and Urban Strike), ran great on the Sega Genesis, but struggled to run on the Snes. Of course this eventually changed, with Nintendo pushing upgrades on the Snes' carts themselves, while Sega was more focused on the Sega CD and 32x. Still, the 16-bit "console war" was one of the best ever, because both the Genesis and the Snes were amazing consoles that really felt different from one another. I'm one of the lucky ones who had both consoles, and I actually find it hard to choose a favorite between them.

I honestly thought this was superior to Super Castlevania. SC always seemed like a dressed up tech demo to show off SNES graphical tricks, and the 360 whip ability seemed cool at first, but destroyed all balance since the enemies weren't changed to keep up with it. Bloodlines felt like more effort was put into actually designing a game.

The name Elizabeth Bartley is somewhat wrong - it's supposed to be Elizabeth _Bathory_ who has Dracula resurrected. A classic case of the lack of an "Rr" and perhaps a "Th" sound in Japanese messing with the translations. She was a Hungarian noblewoman who lived from 1560 to 1614 who, according to an eclectic mix of historical evidence and legend, was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of girls and young women in the lands she ruled, allegedly bathing in their blood to keep herself looking young. How much of this was truth and how much of it propaganda by her enemies will forever be unknown. If the stories _are_ true, it makes her the most prolific serial killer in all of human history. But whether there is any truth to it, she gained a fiendish reputation, and ultimately became the inspiration for another fictional vampire that entered Castlevania canon: Carmilla. This looks like a fun game, by the way.

Ladies and gentlemen, that music is the genius of Michiru Yamane, who gave the world some of Konami's best music, including King's Valley 2. I've only ever had a NES and SNES, and I never particularly cared for Genesis' FM audio. It was only years after that I heard Bloodlines' exquisite soundtrack and realized that CV IV's music could at best be classified as "experimental syncopated mast***ation" in comparison (DX was better, but still nowhere near as good). This is top-tier Castlevania music, and it makes FM sound so beautiful, you wish other composers had the skill with it that she does.

Instead of shooting their arrows straight at you, they intend to delicately shoot them up and arch them at you even though at that velocity, they wouldn't pierce anyone's skull (let alone a piece of cardboard) or do any damage. Super Castlevania 4 is like a fine painting, a bit easy on difficulty, and an early release title for the console. This one was a later release for the Genesis, and a departure from the lore of the Belmont clan, it's story was also shoehorned in from Bram Stoker's Dracula novel, something to this day I feel sort of hurts this game. Still not sure why Konami went this route and had such a drastic departure from previous games lore. But then again, Castlevania's timeline is a bit messy. This one also suffers from being too short, especially with the marathons CV 3 and SCV 4 were.

I’m surprised they used this version of Death for Vampire Survivors

To me the level design of this game is superior to IV! All stages are gimmicky and fun. The idea of exploring Europe beyond the Castle is a welcome refresh to the formula too.

This really is a beautiful game. Personally I think it's way better than Super Castlevania IV despite being more "unorthodox". Can't believe Konami never bothered to remake this with additional stages.

Would have been awesome to see a stage set in a Spanish village!

What's the point in John Morris if the guy with the spear is superior in every aspect?
