A playthrough of Sega's 1992 platformer for the Sega Genesis, Kid Chameleon.
This playthrough shows the direct path through the game. There are over a hundred stages, and since taking the alternate paths usually requires skipping some of the "main" stages, I stuck to taking the stage exits that are marked by flags.
If my memory serves me correctly, Kid Chameleon was a fairly big deal when it was released. The TV and magazine ads leaned heavily on the "edgy attitude" shtick that Sega was becoming increasingly known for, and the game was seeing a run of positive reviews in the gaming magazines.
The game's setup was unexpectedly "meta" in an era where video games rarely acknowledged their own existence. Kid Chameleon centers around the hottest new machine at the local arcade - it seems that people playing it are being kidnapped by the game's villain, and Kid Chameleon takes it upon himself to set things right. It's a video game within a video game, with some light social commentary garnish on the side.
Once he's in, Kid Chameleon becomes the hero of one of the largest, most ambitious platformers on the Genesis. There are over a hundred levels to make it through, each brimming with secret exits, hidden power-up caches, and careful platforming challenges. There are hats that Kid can find hidden in blocks that give him a multitude of different abilities, and many of the stages are built around these mechanics. He can find a samurai hat and cut things down with his katana, a metal-bladed hat lets him bash through rock walls, a motorcycle helmet allows him to dash around on an engine-propelled scooter - there are tons of possibilities, and you'll need to familiarize yourself with them all if you're going to make it to the end. My personal favorite has to be the hockey mask that turns you into a hatchet-tossing Rick from Splatterhouse.
Knowing your abilities is essential because the game is not at all easy - in fact, Kid Chameleon might be one of the most consistently challenging platformers of the 16-bit generation. Its mechanics and emphasis on exploration make it feel like an alternate take on the Super Mario Bros. 3 formula, but the bloodthirsty enemies, labyrinthine level layouts, and the lack of any save or password features make this a title that will last even the best gamers quite awhile. I found challenge to be a refreshing change of pace from the typically easy games of the genre, but be warned that success here demands a sustained, concentrated effort.
But Kid Chameleon happily repays everything you put into it. There are always new stages to find, and over time you'll eventually figure out a strategy for which path serves you best. For instance, I very purposely avoided the Bloody Swamp stage in this playthrough. I had little confidence that I could pass the stage without blowing through half my continues, but that's one of the best things about Kid Chameleon. You nearly always have a choice, and you can play the game as you want to play it. Furthermore, there is an incredible diversity to be found among the level's designs so there's little risk of getting bored. You won't likely see everything the game has to offer until you've gone through it dozens of times.
Kid Chameleon is an excellent old-school platformer. It doesn't hold your hand, and it never goes easy on you, but surmounting these odds offers a huge sense of accomplishment. I'm glad that it is being included on the Genesis Mini so that more people will have the opportunity to experience this forgotten classic from the days when Sega was on top.

This was the very first video game I ever worked on! It's truely wild to watch this and have serious flashbacks of building some of the levels! Also remembering one of the designers, Rick Macaraeg, and one of the artists, Alan Ackerman, who have both since passed away!! It's great to see so many comments here of people who remember and loved the game, even if it was stupid hard to finish all the way to the end!! (You can blame Mark Cerny and Hoyt Ng for that!!)

Ah, Kid Chameleon. I remember playing the sh** out of this game back in the day, and it's still as fun as I remember it being. The best and most efficient way I can review this game is *_It's Sega's answer to Super Mario Bros 3_* The graphics are nice and colorful, the music is great, the controls are solid... But, the acceleration is like Super Mario 2. You go to top speed in less than a second. I think that 100 levels without any sort of save or password system is overkill. Especially with how frustrating the game can be at times. But, the game is still plenty fun. It was a good call for M2 to put this game on the Genesis Mini.

One of my absolute favorite games! Never forget when I played over 80 levels and left my Sega on to go to school. The despair was total when I came home and realized that my dad turned off the Sega. "Electricity is expensive!" I managed to complete the whole game during a Christmas break! Still owns the console and the game and sometimes plays to keep the nostalgia up. Over the years, I have honed my technique and can now complete many levels in a few seconds with the "right" character to gain extra points.

Here's how 90s kids beat this game: You had to assemble a crew. One kid had the game, another kid got his parents to buy a random game magazine at the book store at the mall that was featuring the game that month and had secrets and guides and cheats and stuff. Everybody had to come sleepover and bring their sleeping bag. Someone's mom ordered pizza and tried to get us to take a break and watch Homeward Bound, to which we'd say the game had no pause and we can't quit and that movie was for little kids. You'd switch off players between lives, because that's most fair and finally you found in the magazine that there's a warp to the final boss in the first level and boom, your crew got to brag on the playground and lie and say you did it legit. The next morning you ate corn pops and sat through Eek the Cat and Bobby's World to see if X-Men was re-run or not. It was always a re-run.

This game was so hard (Me and my friend owned a collection of Sega games for the PS3, this was around 2011) that me and my friend called it “Kid Masochameleon”.

SkyDragon Castle 1 has nice base with my new 10mm earbuds. I’ve still yet to make time to finish this. Irritatingly difficult. Watching a play through is far more enjoyable. Nice work!!

I was an SNES kid. Cousins had the Genesis, but I didn't get a lot of playtime on it back in the day. Luckily, as of last September, I have the Sega Genesis Mini and I just beat this game a couple of hours ago. It is definitely one of the Genesis Mini's more challenging games. This playthrough was extremely helpful for some of the harder levels (esp. towards the end!) and on areas where I'd simply get stuck.

Glad it helped! I loved this game, but yeah, it was sooooo hard. I don't think there are too many Genesis games harder than this one.

Played on megadrive. One of the best platform, i have yet the cartridge! Difficult as hell and no saving (big mistake because the game was too long to beat in one session). Great graphic music and gameplay!

Totally radical! I always heard of this 90s platformer from Sega's big Sonic era, but I was never really interested in trying it out for myself. Sega's answer to Super Mario Bros. 3 I guess. The EDGE is sharp enough to cut your fingers on. So Kid Chameleon's got all these bodacious power-ups, all of which are awesome and man, the level design is pretty tubular. Yo, you think you have what it takes? Are you a bad enough dude to survive this EXCELLENT adventure??!

@@NintendoComplete I loved Video Power. Johnny Arcade was so weirdly energetic, that you can't stop watching him. My favorite part of the show was when Johnny gave kids hints on how to beat the latest games. It's kind of a shame that it didn't last so long. :'(

I loved it too, but as an adult, it weirds me out. If you go back and watch any of those episodes, he gets creepy with how touchy feely he gets with the kids on stage. Especially with how he touches their necks in an uncomfortable, way too familiar kind of a way.
