Imagine all of those indie developers heavily inspired by Metroid, having created some really good metroidvanias in the last two decades, and having the chance to go back to the foundation of a genre and finding it as solid as it ever was.

I always thought 2D metroid was a top tier Metroidvania even compared to today's indie resurgence. There's just something about the world and the abilities that you acquire that makes the game more unique and interesting than most. That's why I was always was puzzled Symphony of the night was always brought up alongside super metroid.... like sure it's a good game and it does some interesting things but exploration isn't as satisfying, the abilities not as interesting and the game is poorly balanced due to how much freedom it gives.

@@logiclunacy606 I have to say I disagree. Super Metroid is my favourite game of all time, but Castlevania Symphony of the Night has always been number 2 or 3 for me. I think that exploration and abilities are among the best in both games. I can see why some people prefer SOTN.

@@rodrigocaceres2879 I mean that's fine but I felt rather disappointed by it when I finally got round to playing it.... especially compared to rondo of blood which was to me a much better game. The issue I have with Symphony is that, it's just okay, I appreciate how open it is, it's more open than super Metroid however I feel Super metroid and say hollow Knight got the right balance of being open enough to give the player choice but has enough powers within the game to not trivialise the choice of where you want to go. Symphony has an ability to fly which allows you to get nearly anywhere, then there's the fog ability which works on a few gates, a blue key which isn't an ability,, you just kinda buy it. Then there's one use only abilities like the wolf which you only use for one secret and the light for one small area to get to the spikeproof armour that is also used for one very small area. It's like the bat wings just essentially unlock most of the game and the other abilities feel like after thoughts. The upside down castle is very cool but it's a pain to platform through and it is an interesting to padd out the game. I do appreciate the clock puzzle at the end though.

@@TheCatWithTheMAC Well it's more super metroid I'm describing in particular. The other 2d metroids are a lot more linear from what I remember. Super Metroid doesn't top Hollow Knight for me but it is what I consider top tier, despite it's clunky aspects and a few not so special boss fights it is a phenomenal experience that you can find yourself getting lost in. Metroid is really not like other metroidvanias, a lot of the abilities are unique to metroid and the world itself is pretty cool. Would recommend them if you haven't played them.

@@GaboObando Yea and 3DS version was done deliberately to look washed out and not done that way coz of 3DS capabilities.. Check these games out to see what 3DS is capable of graphically: Luigis Mansion 2, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, Donkey Kong 3S, Smash Bros and most of those games are on the Switch, Wii U and look just the same as 3DS version Also, don't forget when Nintendo worked on the Metroid game for 3DS they was supporting another device at the same time known as the Wii U and even though 3DS should if died Nintendo supported the 3DS 70% and the Wii U 30% whereas Sony finished the PSvita to 100% support PS3/PS4 customers and Nintendh did the opposite but now Switch is a thing I still don't think Switch was a better idea than 3DS HD that is Bluetooth enabled so can play the device on any TV without the need of wires

The biggest complaint I've seen is very hard bosses and not liking the counter system, but I liked the counter system from Samus Returns (they didn't) and I love bosses that kick my ass, so this seems really great.

The game devs did EXACTLY what they were supposed to do. They perfected the systems put in place in Samus Returns and nailed what people love about this franchise. My only complaint is that I’ll eventually finish the game and will have to wait a few more years until the next one!

If you've never played a 2d Metroid game, you have been missing some of the best video games ever made. Start with the SNES all time game Super Metroid, which as kid blew my mind and sunk so many hours into it. I just beat it again last week in anticipation for this and it holds up incredibly well to this day. You will not be disappointed in these games.

Metroid seems to have had such a small following compared to Nintendo's other more successful franchises, but that small collection of us have so, SO been hoping it gets the reception it's been long deserving of. @Thaddeus Cosse Luckily I have a SNES Classic, WiiU VC for Zero Mission, and an actual Metroid Fusion cartridge that I got at Vintage Stock when I was half my age, so I went ahead and played them on official hardware, but I think Nintendo is really asking people to emulate their games by not having VC on the Switch.

I don’t even need this review to be hyped for this game, but the fact that it’s getting glowing reviews is ecstatic enough. As someone who had to endure the severe drought from Other M to Samus Returns, it’s a beautiful blessing to me that we’re not only finally get a brand new, mainline Metroid game, but from the same devs as Samus Returns! Which I already quite enjoyed, and since this seems like an improvement over that, then I already know I’m in for greatness. I’ve wait from this game since its E3 reveal ‘till now, so I’m definitely gonna try my best to hold out for these two, remaining days until I can finally hold it in my hands.👌🏽

Is it just me or does the detail and graphics not look as good as everyone is saying? Don't get me wrong, the game looks like an amazing metroid game and I can't wait to play it. But a lot of reviews mention the detail and how beautiful it looks, but it just.... doesn't look that stand-out to me. The background doesn't look like it has a ton of detail. we've seen some other games on switch that look more beautiful. I don't see how it is a "gorgeous adventure" but I'm sure it's a lot of fun.

The devil really is in the details. Looking at it on a phone screen via a youtube video doesn't do it justice. Every area feels like it has so much more depth, you see a bunch of things in the background that really don't need to be there, but it helps make the world feel real. And when the camera pans out for those cinematic counters and such, you almost forget you're even playing a 2D game. What it lacks in impressive graphical fidelity, it makes up for with incredibly smooth and crisp animation and colors that really pop. They made the most out of the budget they had for sure.

While the regular enemies are nothing too insane, the boss fights are pretty big jump in difficulty. I think i have died to every single boss at least once because they hit like a truck. Some of them start doing like 1-2 energy bar worth of damage with a single attack and you just cannot really mess up too much.

I believe that what makes the EMMI encounters work for every type of fan is, as always, options. In Fusion, you had to hide and cower. I can see how some fans would be unhappy about that. In Dread, you can either do that, or stealthily sneak by. Always dependant on the player's skills. Something Metroid, most of the time, tries to keep in mind while developing their games. If you have the skill, you can do what you want how you want.

This was the exact game I wanted it to be. Narratively, gameplay, world design, atmosphere, I have no notes. I was worried there might not be enough potential for sequence breaking on replays, but looking up videos after finishing, I can see that isn't the case. I've been waiting for a follow up to Fusion for ages and never thought it could be worth the wait. Damn if I've never been so happy to be wrong.

This game feels like the gameplay of samus returns the graphic style and spectacle cutscenes of other m the tone vibe and difficulty of fusion the world layout and area theming of am2r and the explorative nature of super Metroid

However, I cannot stand those stealth partwith those robots On the second one I literally just stop playing the game because I did not find it fun and it literally took it from being a game that I'd rate in 8.7 to a 9.2 and took it down to like a six Didn't find the aspect of the game enjoyable at all. Matter of fact I found it unjoyable and a completely trashed and ruined my experience. I hope they never add that nonsense in again because I'm kind of pissed that I spent the money on the game. And it's a shame for me because it is a beautiful game. The controls are top notch. But stealth in a f****** Metroid game Eat a bag of 🍆 What a horrible idea. Metroid games have a bit higher difficulty for late bosses than Zelda games. But let me put it this way. I played Metroid Prime 2, notoriously the most difficult of the entire series, and beat it to completion as a brand new gamer (it was my first video game in years aside from some Mario Kart as a kid)

SPOILERS AHEAD. This.Game.Is.Incredible. I just finished it. It is the second herald of the new age of video games succeeding to the age of OoT and SM64; the first herald of this age was BotW, and the next will be Prime 4; Odyssey though brilliant didn't change things enough to be a marker for a new age. There were definitely a couple of 'Metroid Moments', where the way forward was to shoot through an otherwise seemingly impervious edifice, or to jump across to a very obscure morph-ball corridor underwater; I don't know if I would have been able to beat the final boss without my 99% completion rate, and had I not found the extra few power-ups that I did find but only by chance through accidentally stumbling across their hiding places while scouring the map for the last ones, I even then don't think I'd have been strong enough for it; so having said that it hasn't quite eliminated the flaws of Super wherein you'll need a walkthrough to beat it. But given that the whole game is so INCREDIBLE those niggles are not much cause for concern really. This game is really something else. I haven't even watched this video yet just had to say something right away.

I don't really think you need a walkthrough to beat Super, or Dread for that matter. If you know how to use a map properly, you should always know where to look if you ever get lost. Super even tells you the boss locations on the map, so you should always have a general direction. Dread doesn't do this, but it does make a lot of improvements in map usage. Allowing you to set points of interest to come back to, highlight types of doors and blocks so you can find every place that opens up when you get a new power, and labeling every upgrade you come across are all huge improvements that I can't say many other metroidvanias do.

I'm so glad you can bomb jump in this game. They stopped allowing that in most of the metroids but I thought I'd test it and I'm glad I did. It's bringing back super metroid vibes. I'll be taking full advantage of that mechanic ;] .

All other (2d) metroids allow infinite bomb jumping except for Fusion and the original Metroid 1 and 2. Even the Primes allow you to do atleast double bomb jumps.

5:05 I hope so because fusion had some annoying boss fights. One thing I must know - can you IBJ?!? Wall jumping also looks dwarfed. Still a day one pickup for me.

no, bomb jumps work just like in fusion, as in it’s delayed enough to not be infinite, at least you can jump with the morph ball as soon as you get it instead of needing to get the spring ball or hi-jump boots, also i found out you can single wall jump with an upgrade about 3 hours in but it’s pretty hard to pull

Picking up my copy Friday. Absolutely stoked. I enjoyed Samus Returns, didn’t like the parrying element but it was quality for certain. I honestly wish that Nintendo would have been at the helm, but regardless I’m happy to play a proper 2D Metroid.

Finally played this, and yeah... It's a good! I like how the game starts with the player just trying to figure out how to traverse the map, but gradually shifts away from that, until after a certain upgrade traversal becomes trivial, and normal enemies are just resourse bags, and the game becomes all about absolutely nerve-racking (but not unfair) boss fights.

the only complaint I have is the controls. They should give you the option to move and aim with the D-Pad and leave the L button for aiming and walking instead of just the left stick and no option for walking considering this game has stealth portions to it (EMMI) areas.

While the game deserves the universal praise it got, it would be nice if reviewers didn’t also universally fail to stress that this is one of the hardest games of recent years, and the hardest Metroid since the original. Reviews are meant to give us the reviewer’s personal views but also meant to serve as buying guides, first and foremost. People, should know that unless you’re a Metroid veteran who enjoys extreme difficulty spikes, they’d be better served by hopping onboard the recent Prime remake, than this.

to use free aim you hold L and aim with the control stick, but you still can shoot like in the old metroid by just tilting the stick while moving. i never found it annoying personally

Dread's pretty good but those EMMI sections are tedious instead of being scary, I _Dread_ stopping the fun exploration to run around avoiding EMMI's to get to that brain room.
