It was. Link's Awakening came out in 1993 while DKC3 was 3 years later. Indeed, Link was searching for the seashells found in Link's Awakening but the one the bear had wasn't quite what Link was looking for.

Y'know what I'm so surprised there wasn't a mention of Yoshi Dolls in Metal Gear Solid 3D Snake Eater, Kirby and Starfy being in theater posters in Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga, Mr. Game and Watch being in Donkey Kong Country Returns, Link's name being mentioned in a Final Fantasy game on a gravestone, Pacman in a Mario Kart game, Samus appearing in Kirby’s Dreamland 3, Metroid-like creatures (Komaytos) in Kid Icarus, Kirby also fights Metroids in Dreamland 3. In Link's Awakening Link fights various Mario enemies and even Kirby himself there's more to this crossover thing then you know. Donkey Kong and Luigi being in the audience of The Arcade Punch Out That's all I can think of. I wonder why Nintendo doesn’t do things like this these days. I was hoping to see a bunch of References and Easter Eggs in Odyssey.

The mario kart 8 one is not a mere reference... It's a full on CAMEO FEATURETTE, INCLUSION. An example of a REFERENCE, would just be a small mention of a word, phrase or picture of the Zelda zeries, without it necessarily being so obvious unless you're a zelda fan. But the mario kart one is definitely not JUST A REFERENCE. THEY LITERALLY INCLUDED LUNK HIMSELF AS HIS OWN CHARACTER, HIS OWN GAME THEMED TRACK, AND HIS OWN SONG!
