The quintessential Shug video! One of my all time favorites. Makes me want to get out on the trail after watching it. I purchased a Boreal Wool shirt about three years ago and it's absolutely my favorite piece of gear for winter hiking. I've worn it in sleet and freezing rain and it keeps me warm and dry. You can wear it around a camp fire and not worry about a spark melting it or destroying it. An item you'll have for the rest of your life and probably pass along to other generations (as you stated).

Shug -- You've inspired me. I haven't had the time to get out and away, so I just put up my hammock in the back yard last night. Hi-jacked the kids swingset frame. Woke up a few times because of suburban noises, but got almost nine hours of sleep! That never happens. Only got down to the mid-30's here in the KC area last night. I just received a SnugPak UQ, so used that, a sleeping pad, and a sleeping bag. No CBS at all. I need to get a good overquilt though, as my sleeping bag wasn't quite enough. I woke up chilly. Not miserable, just chilled. All Secure in the Heartland Sector! Whoo Buddy!

We always kept a Nalgene in our sleeping bag in scouts. I also kept one made up with 2 packets of cocoa. Moved it to the cold spots while sleeping and had some Yoo-hoo in the morning. I know the smellables in the sleeping bag weren't bear or mini bear safe but when you are in the woods with 25-50 kids plus 5-10 adults there is enough noise between kids stomping and old man snores to scare anything off.

Olympic Outdoors Dad here in the NC piedmont the things we have to worry about are mostly raccoons and rodents. There are some areas with larger animals creating a threat. Usually the problems we had were mice and raccoons clawing thru a pack that someone left some m&ms in a pocket.
@Olympia_Outdoors7 жыл бұрын
Chris Rasmussen That's interesting. At some places here on the west coast I'll hang my whole pack. We do have black bear to think about but there pretty shy.

SW Washington here, I have left my food bag hanging from one end of my hammock overnight in an area with black bear scat fresh on the trail in, never bothered. Many would say that it's irresponsible, and I can't really argue. But I was so close to civilization, within a couple miles of houses, that I figured the bears wouldn't be all that tempted. Now some scraps left out in the eating area were taken, but since I never heard anything and nothing was particularly disturbed, I assume it was rodents. And no, I don't think I'm related to Chris... At least not that I'm aware of

Boreal is a very nice looking piece of gear. Down here it would be more than enough over just a simple base layer. In fact one might spend more time carrying it than wearing it, at least until you sat down for the hours of ambush waiting time. I hunt Whitetails so I guess it is time to order a Boreal. You said you have a large and if I remember correctly you are 6 foot and close to 200 pounds give or take a few. I'm 6,1" and 180 these days so I'm guessing the large would fit over me and my base layers too. Thanks again.

Another great trip video, Shug; thanks for inviting us into your woodscapade. I was wondering: could you have fashioned some type of trekking pole/string/coffee pot system to collect water from that stream? Similar to a fishing pole method, but with your pot on the end, lowering it in the water and collecting it that way?

That would have been more work than I wanted. The video makes the river look easier to get to but it fely dodgy. I had planned for melting snow and it is not hard to do.

Hey there Shug buddy. Yeah, Minnesota has followed suit with some other states that tried the online/phone reservations only for it's many campgrounds (including backpacking sites) in major forests and campgrounds. It is a bummer. Anywho, good seeing ya out there, take care.

I likes the old system...easier to just drive up and put cash in the box and go.

The clear winter nights can get very cold! We had the same temps in the U.P. I was all snuggled up in our bed, but I still would rather be out hammock camping...

Hey shug. Those ribz packs are badass. I have been using them for years. They change their designs every couple years. I have 3 different versions. You cannot put too much in them. It gets too bulky. There is no padding on the body side. It needs padding.

Nice to hear that.

Your pack looks like the 52 liter one of your favorite brand. I'll be up in the area in late April. Good video.

I use my ribz pack with a old sternum strap just above the bags to hot to zip it up. though it does not let you really swing your arms. they are nice for a day hike. winter just a small bkpk for bulk.

I hiked the Northville Placid trail in the adirondacks in June 2013 wearing a ribz pack and it was great... until the bottle of DEET I had in it leaked and melted the rubbery coating on the inside of the ribz. Had to throw it out after that. There’s was really no salvaging it. Hopefully they changed the fabric since then.
@shugemery7 жыл бұрын
I think they still do. That DEET can eat some stuff up.
