It's kind of sad, because he doesn't do too bad of a job during their 2005 tour. As a voice teacher, I'm here to say: a good sound doesn't always equal good technique. There is a way to get that "grit" and still protect your voice. That's why the classically-trained rock singers can still do it decades later.
