i always considered Novoselic bass playing to be influenced by Paul McCartney. If you add Grohl's Zeppelin-esque chops, you start to realize why Nirvana were a great band. they had the yin and yang of rock n' roll, strong melodies with a lot of power. it gets to your soul.

Pat didn't join Nirvana until they were on tour after In Utero's release. I think it is just an overdub. If you listen to the Rio demos or the actual In Utero album you will hear two guitars much of the time. I like the live phase they had with Pat, it made their live shows sound more like their studio stuff.

I'm glad they toned down the cheese for the album. There seems to be a trend on youtube that whenever an earlier or alternate version of a song comes on everyone goes "this is so much better than the album version" You're wrong. This is NOT better than the version on the album. It's just an interesting piece of the song's development.

the mixdown that the nirvana estate has is probably a different mix than what you hear here (where craig M emphasized the instrumental over the vocals in that mix). this particular tape was found in kurt's trash a few weeks after he died, while the mix that ended up on the album was probably from a different tape. the original masters appear to have been lost, so this is as good as it will get.
