I feel like this was the album to piss off the hipsters. Kurt Cobain expressed a lot of frustration with Nirvana becoming very mainstream. Basically, he was introverted and socially anxious, and after the release of Nevermind, the main people who listened to his music were the exact type of people that would bully him in high school. He also dealt with a ton of unnecessary media coverage of his personal life, such as his marriage and drug use, which really pissed him off even more. This is just a really angry record, and the one where he’s actually trying to prove something to the world. That’s why it’s my favorite.

In Utero is my personal favorite album of all time because it's all the things I love in music. It's got a real raw sense of grit and yet can still create earworms, in a way that doesn't feel messy or compromised. Nevermind is an all time classic, it never veers off a very clean sound, only sometimes using harsher chords or sounds. In Utero is FILLED to the brim with ugly tones and chord progressions and yet it all works seamlessly, also the lyrics are incredible

Yes, thank you so much for this one! I was among the people who kept recommending you this album. It's a masterpiece and I'm so glad you enjoyed it. RIP Kurt. I also wanted to say that I would still love to see you react to Nevermind even if you're familiar with some songs. For me personally, the entire album is pretty much flawless and even less popular songs are really, really good. If you're not interested in doing a reaction and want to listen to it in the future on your own, then it's OK, I get it, but if you think your viewers won't enjoy your video, then I'm sure they will! Even if not for the reaction aspect of it, then surely for the review one 😉 And as some people in the comments pointed out, their MTV Unplugged live album would also make for a great reaction. One of the most legendary live albums ever, without a doubt. There's also the video version if you're interested!

Awesome video I love hearing opinions from people who hear these for the first time. I'll give a quick breakdown for each song and what (as far as we know) Kurt actually wrote them about. In Utero is Nirvana's 3rd studio album. Something to mention is that Kurt never really spoke about his songs and what they mean, because he said that they don't have a meaning. All except for Scentless Apprentice which he said in an interview was written from the perspective of the protagonist in a novel called perfume. Serve the servants, might be a bit anti media and anti industry, but other than that I have no idea. there are some references to past things he's done in life, but no real clear or singular meaning to this track. I think that this was a track that he wrote the guitar part for and then wrote the words last minute in the recording studio (which he was known for doing). Scentless Apprentice, Like I said above, was written from the perspective of the protagonist from the novel Perfume. Heart Shaped box, while many believe it was written about his wife Courtney Love, Kurt has directly said that he did not write it about her. Instead I believe that one of his friends or bandmates mentioned that Kurt wrote heart shaped box about an old room mate who was also a musician. Whereas the riff in the song was originally supposed to be used in one of his wife's songs, but Kurt liked it too much and used it on his own track. R*** Me, was actually an anti r*** song. Kurt was a huge feminist and in his words "this song is about hairy, sweaty, macho, redneck men who r***". Frances farmer will have her revenge on Seattle, is about a real person named Frances Farmer. (I roughly know her story so I might get some details wrong, do your own research if interested) She was a singer who was falsely accused of something and sent to a mental institution. The song is about her experience in the institute, and possibly about her rumoured lobotomy (which to my knowledge was not proven to have actually happened). Dumb, is a song that I don't know anything about so I'm just going to guess based on what I know about Kurt and from personal experiences. I think that it is either about drugs or depression, and obviously their effects on Kurt. Very Ape, just like serve the servants I don't think this one has any real meaning. It has some references to the past things he's done in life, but nothing explicitly clear. Milk it, I'm not really sure but I think it's a little bit about how people rely on each other, or how he relies on others. It also seems like a bit of self hate (just to let you know, Kurt wanted to name the album 'I Hate Myself And Want To Die' because he thought it was funny, the studio didn't let him). Pennyroyal Tea, probably my favourite song of all time. There is a lot of speculation on the meaning of this song, and it is also one of Kurt's longest projects that he started a couple years before the band, and he was going to re-release it as a remix in a single because he thought it had a lot of potential (but he died before he could finalise the details of getting that done, and the rest of the band broke up). Some people say that the song is about his heroin addiction (I personally don't think so because of the timeline when it was first written), others think it was written in reference to how pregnant women used to drink pennyroyal tea as a form of abortion. I personally think that the song is about depression and the feeling of repetition, with the line "give me a Leonard Cohen afterwards, so I can sigh eternally" Kurt has said that when he was depressed he would listen to Leonard Cohen, but it always made it worse. And the line "I'm so tired, I can't sleep" , at least to myself, is exactly how it feels to be depressed in the smallest amount of words. Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, is explicitly anti media, and anti industry, Kurt was mad at music labels and wanted to make a song that could never be played on radios, in fact he wanted the whole album to be like that to some extent. Tourettes, As far as I'm aware is just about Tourettes. It might be a metaphor for something, someone, or himself. But we have no way of knowing that. All Apologies, is Kurt's way of spitting back at his haters. People telling him what he can or can't say, people telling him what he either is or isn't. And Kurt made this song to satirically apologise. Some people also think that this was a s***ide song, like a final good bye.But it actually wasn't the last song he wrote, the last studio recorded song that Kurt Made was 'You Know You're Right'. Final notes. I think that clears up the meaning of the songs at least to some extent, there is always more to the stories behind these songs. But in the end it mostly comes down to subconscious thought. Kurt has always said that most of his songs don't mean anything, which is kind of true. Because he was writing whatever came to his head, therefore he wrote the song about whatever he was thinking of at the time. Any problem that bothered him, any person or thing that interested him, whatever. So their songs do have a meaning, just not a cohesive one. Besides, I think while the history and story of something is cool, it is more important what these songs mean to us. And also the song that Spotify auto played after the album finished is 'About A Girl' by Nirvana from their debut studio album Bleach. Sorry for the long comment, but I wanted to be clear and succinct. I would also recommend listening to more of Nirvana's albums 'Bleach' 'Insesticide' and their 'MTV Live Performance', as well as other big albums from the Grunge era. Albums such as Pearl Jam's 'Ten' and their 'MTV Live Performance', Alice in Chain's 'Facelift' 'Dirt' 'Jar of Flies' and their 'MTV Live Performance', and Soundgarden's 'Superunknown', 'Badmotorfinger', and 'Down On The Upside'. In fact Anything by Chris Cornell (the singer of Soundgarden) is a banger, some of his other legendary albums are 'Temple of the Dog' by Temple of the Dog, 'Audioslave' and 'Out of Exile' by Audioslave, 'No One Sings Like You Anymore' 'Higher Truth' and 'Euphoria Morning' by Chris Cornell. There are other grunge bands but I don't know much about them, these are the really popular ones. That's grunge in a nutshell, hope that helps.

Man, so many things about this album are just so heartbreaking. Kurt after almost all of his shows on tour, would end up coughing up blood from not knowing how to handle his vocal. Knowing how Kurt passed away and having the last Nirvana song ever made, was just him apologizing for his actions and being himself while not being able to fill others expectations.

Btw, although nevermind is their big hit album, of the 3, bleach, NM and in utero i like nevermind the least. And i still actually love nevermind. But in utero is just so raw and powerful in an unapologetic way. Bleach was also great. Its a little known fact in america but nirvana were big in the uk before anywhere else so teen spirit didnt shake things up the same way here that it did stateside. Their first ever tv appearance was also on british tv on the late night 'yoof' show 'the word'. Theyd also admitted many times that the uk got them first. And they always liked that the brits were into them before they were big superstars. A similar situation to what jimi hendrix had

There are other Nirvana albums, live albums and compilations that I really think you should do: Bleach, Unplugged in New York, Incesticide, and Live at Reading.

I've always interpreted Serve the Servants as a biblical reference. Jesus said: "the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve." He was making the point that the road to heaven was to serve, not be served, a classic Christian inversion of the social order.

Love the videos! A few recommendations: Nurture - Porter Robinson (light summer electric with fun production) Koi No Yokan or White Pony - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop)

Also, I'm cruising through your videos today and noticing that you haven't discovered Garbage yet. You should definitely do that...start with their debut (self-titled) and if you are still on board, be sure to check out the next album, Version 2.0. They have plenty of great albums, but I'm especially attached to the first two.

I love all of Nirvana’s albums but Bleach is my favorite. You asked if Kurt was ok, no he was not, he committed suicide April 1994.
