That indeed is a small coffin in front of Chad's set. Turns out his favorite dog, a small Dachshund named "Buster" who always laid in front of the kick drum while he practiced at home, had passed away. To honor his memory, Chad for the better part of a year, carried his coffin to gigs and laid it there. Chad believed that Buster's spirit helped him to play better.

You kids have no idea how lucky you are to have access to all this rare music and video footage. I would have killed for this shit when I was younger. We only had the records and every once in a while we'd get a TV/newspaper interview, if we were lucky. Now, everything they ever recorded is available 24/7. Not just Nirvana, either- every band in history. Crazy.

@@anemaldemomusic8182 Thats an excellent point. The internet pretty much killed off independent labels completely, which in turn killed a lot of developing subcultures and prevented any new ones from forming. So, for example, subculture scenes like grunge and record labels like subpop cannot exist in this environment because theres nowhere for them to take root and grow. The internet has been very bad for music, so perhaps that nullifies my earlier comment.

My 2 cents: 85 or 86 in knew Chad from School, we hit if off pretty good music wise into a lot of stuff underground no one knew. From Kurt's Auto biographies I can see a lot of what Chad brought to influence him. Just like Buzzo Chad's knowledge of the underground sound help influence the band. Before Nirvana I can remember helping Chad get his kit out of his Van for a gig on Mercer street for a band he was in called "Stone Crow". He brought experience to Nirvana. I agree with the others that his drumming was just as good as the guitar work or bass at that era of time "Bleach". I can remember hanging out and knowing about all the hardcore punk we listened to he takes out an acoustic and starts playing and singing told me (long before meeting Kurt) he wants to write music....Pretty cool! Very Humble guy...

Nirvana - Lithium (with Chad Channing) 190-0pm 6.11.24 what yer on about...? all these amazing songs must have been written pre fame and fortune. which suggests the band had folded before fame and fortune struck home - in the sense it, nirvana, had nothing else to offer anyone but tales of the tour and jacking up and masturbation.... anyone got the original bleach with chad channing on drums? - as that's worth oooooooooo........ a dollar. ahahaha... i like original line ups as that's why you or i were attracted to the band or the music or the moment in the first instance. anyhow; band politics aside... i'd say the stuff with dale drumming will be worth the most re: memorabilia. and only in it for the money shysters are pretty much on their way out - swings and roundabouts, mate - as it's about time music fans enjoyed themselves again, i say. what say you? p.s conspiracy theory kids are at it again but... chad channing - the real kurdt resigned to drumming... or the missing brother kurdt wasn't aware he had been sacked from the band or the guy forever to be deemed the johnny cum lately cos he never, made a song and dance about his status within the band or the popular kultur pot brewing up a storm? where's paul, they ask? no one ever replies...

i’m gonna play the devils advocate here because i’m a big fan of chad’s drumming. He was fine, and that was his problem. He was fine. A generation of kids that grew up in the 90’s didn’t rave about his drumming. It was just fine. But when kurt decided to recruit someone like dave, that’s exactly what happened. People loved the energy and power he brought. They got the missing element they needed to make an album like Nevermind work

fotm07 I understand that, but like what some don't realize is that Chad actually wrote a lot of the drum parts in Nirvana, and Dave probably much less, I'd say the majority of the songs off Nevermind and maybe 2-3 of In Utero were the work of Chad, yeah Dave ended up being better than Chad in the end, but during the time in Nirvana, I'd say Dave was definitely better in energy, but only slightly better in skill, at least in the Nirvana days, he really shined as a skilled player in Foo Fighters and QOTSA

I saw then on the IN UTERO tour and I remember having a few thoughts on the the show: 1. Nirvana as a live band was underrated. I thought that no matter the hype they exceeded the already high expectations for the show. 2.I liked NEVERMIND a whole lot but as much as I liked that record IN UTERO was a superior record. It was also recorded in Cannon Falls Minnesota not all that far from where I live. 3. Dave Grohl is a seriously good drummer. Finally 4. In order to enhance their the quality of their live product the addition of Pat Smear was a damn good idea.

chad kind of played like he went to jazz school or something. he plays his own version of a swing pattern on the ride cymbal a lot, dave was more focused on pummeling the drums and keeping perfect time
@alexstrongman1863
@alexstrongman1863 2 жыл бұрын
@@Uncannyguitar i'd agree with this. it's that riding the ride cymbal repetitively on each beat, it makes songs feel slower. dave used it to keep time but generally just left the toms and snare do the talking in the verse, which makes it feel a lot more upbeat. i'd say that's one of the main differences, it's that incessant hi hat or ride or cymbal against only doing it every couple of beats or taking it out completely.
@Ukraineaissance2014

Chad lacks a lot of power in the choruses that grohl had but hes a bit jazzy and good with a ride cymbal, creative on the bass and tom hits as well. He overplays the hi hat a bit and it pulls him back out of time sometimes, something I used to be terrible for Go to the second verse here and the fill into it (about 1:40). He and grohl play almost exactly the same fill into the chorus but you can barely hear it here, with grohl it sounds like a shotgun

ducati644 ducati644 Unfortunately for Chad, the recording quality of Bleach isn’t great. And if there is an instrument that’s going to suffer from subpar recording quality, it’s the drums. Chad was a creative drummer. Dave has better dynamics. His power and stamina also have a huge effect on Nirvanas sound. When I listen to them with Dave, especially live, there’s a sense that he’s really hold down the foundation of the band. It feels less clear with Chad. Chad is sloppier, I think this performance is a good example of that. Chad wasn’t bad though, but they were right to pick Dave 🤷🏿‍♂️

Dave was in a band that had done "better" than Nirvana by the time he joined. So I think that they felt as though Dave was the star and that they would do better with him. Turns out Kurt was the star, it just took one to know one.

I guess my point is that they didn't kick Chad out for Dave, they just kicked Chad out, and then and spent a while looking for a different drummer. To me, Chad isn't so bad that you just kick him out. Just my opinion. He was a solid drummer, and I like how he incorporated double pedals.

I love how people always go on about how Dave is so much better than Chad when really they don't get the difference in quality of recording situations they were each a part of. To put it in perspective the rental cost of the drum gear that Dave used on Nevermind was just over $1500 for ten days.... the recording costs for every single song combined that Chad appeared on was less than that. Its reported that Nevermind costs $130 000 to make while Bleach was under seven hundred bucks.

So if Chad had all equipment that Dave had he'd magically be a better drummer? I've seen Dave play a shit kit like this and make it sound amazing. It's not the gear, it's just playing style, power, and talent. Also, it's really not fair to compare them. Dave is in a class of his own with his drumming. Respect to Chad for helping to bring Nirvana to the point of needing Dave. Respect to Dave for being Dave.
@TheSickNeeds

If its just the paying style, power and talent that make something great then why did the band spend any money to record Nevermind? They could have bought a pretty decent house at the time for what they spent to make the album which is a lot for a group of guys who had trouble making rent.
@bigbassjonz

@@TheSickNeeds That was the record label and producer, not the band. They would have been fine with low budget recording and happier with the overall sound and mix. Kurt considered Nevermind over produced, but it was a big label album and it put them on the world stage.
@TheSickNeeds
@TheSickNeeds 3 жыл бұрын
@@bigbassjonz The band was given options and a budget (and they went over budget). The record label didn't want Butch Vig because they didn't know who he was. Nirvana choose to work at Sound City because it had a Neve board. The label pushed for a bigger name to be attached to the album so the band was given a list of names to choose from and they picked Andy Wallace because of his credentials of having worked with Slayer. What Kurt said he was happy with and not happy with changed in every interview. Dave was so in love with the sound he got during those sessions he ended up buying that exact Neve board. When the band recorded their follow up they wanted a less polished sound but still went with a specific person because of how great they felt is past work sounded. Steve Albini mainly for his work with Pixies.

Dave made some changes on In Bloom, he added an extra kick on the main verse. Also on the other ones & this comes from Chad himself. Check your facts before cussing around.

@@elizaely5428 Facts ? Which facts exactly are you talking about ? I was referring to what Jack Endino has said. It's not about an extra kick or an extra hi-hat... You are missing the point completely, which is that Chad participated in the songwriting process and the drum parts for for almost all of Nevermind songs were written by CHAD. Ofcourse Dave made some small changes for the final recording... Duhh. Also Jack Endino said that "In Utero" was the first and only album where all the drums were written by Dave.
