I was lucky enough to grow up in Oly where Kurt lived at this time and see them on several occasions in small venues, including Grohl's first show at the North Shore Surf Club. Absolutely electric shows, energy through the roof, sweaty masses of long-haired kids pogoing, moshing, and stage diving, utterly losing ourselves. It was indeed a magical time.

That must of been a great time living in Olympia around the time when Kurt lived there, 114 Pear St, Olympia, WA must of been amazing to see them at the North Shore Surf Club, and all the other venues around Olympia they played… I know you said you went to the North Shore Surf Club (Grohl’s first show with Nirvana) on 10/11/90, did you see them at The Mods at the Evergreen State College on 10/17/90? Or any of the other Evergreen State College shows they played there, and curious question did you listen to KAOS Community Radio when Kurt went there on 09/25/90 where he played Acoustic (Opinion, Lithium, Dumb, Been A Son, etc…) I always wanted to hear the Full Radio session Kurt did that day, and hear the version of D-7 Kurt did with Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening / K Records), who was the Host of the “Boy Meets Girl” Show. That’s really great you got to see all that History…. As it was Happening. The Closest I’ve ever got to being near Cobain/Nirvana show was when Nirvana played at Maxwell’s, Hoboken, NJ on July 13, 1989 (as Maxwell’s was only 45 minutes away from my house) and since Nirvana played at J.C. Dobbs in Philadelphia the day previous on July 12, 1989 Nirvana would of drove down the highway passed my town to get to Hoboken, NJ to play at Maxwell’s, on July 13, 1989 (Kurt was only 45 mins away, and he Smashed his Univox Hi-Flier beyond repair at this show,) which is my Favorite brand/model guitar, and my favorite band in my home state not that far away, but unfortunately I was only 7 months old in July ‘89 and Nirvana played there again at Maxwell’s 9-Months later on April 28, 1990 (which you see clips of this show in the Sub Pop In Bloom Alternate Music Video) the Live shots with Kurt wearing the Mudhoney “Big Muff” t-shirt and using the Home Made Hybrid Surf Green Mustang in the In Bloom music video was filmed at Maxwell’s, Hoboken, NJ on April 28, 1990. Then the third and final NJ performance was when Nirvana played at the Legendary Punk Venue “City Gardens” in Trenton, NJ on September 27, 1991. If I was old enough I would of went to all 3 of these shows… (the 2 Maxwell’s Hoboken NJ July 13, 1989 & April 28, 1990 and the City Gardens Trenton NJ September 27, 1991) were the only NJ shows Nirvana ever played sure Nirvana did their MTV Unplugged Rehearsals at SST Inc., Rehearsal Facility, In Weehawken, NJ on November 16 & 17, 1993 but obviously that was closed to the public as it was a rehearsal… But I do own the April 28, 1990 Maxwell’s, Hoboken, NJ and the September 27, 1991 City Gardens, Trenton, NJ shows on Cassette tapes that were recorded at those shows. As I knew someone who went to both shows and recorded them on Cassettes and then gave me them a few years back… I mean the 09/27/91 show cassette is kind of distorted as he was standing in the front row in front of Kurt and Kurt’s Amps just over power that little cassette recorder… hahaha.

@@rychcorporhate Haha my good buddy lives in Kurt's old Pear St. apartment. I was just there when I visited home a couple months back. I've started to notice in the early videos of Dave playing with Nirvana, he uses the ride as a crash almost exclusively, while later on he almost always used the two towering crashes to crash on almost every measure of a song, which takes so much considering how high they were are how hard he hit. it's a small thing, but just thought I'd mention it to see if anyone else noticed that.
@vCHv943 жыл бұрын
You know...you're right (ba-dum TISH!). Honestly, well spotted. I'll bet his style shifted a tonne across those early shows as he adjusted from playing with Scream to joining Nirvana. Likewise, as they started writing new material and combining styles. I also wonder if he had a smaller setup at first given he had to lug his kit from LA up to Seattle for those shows when he joined (listening to the audible of Grohl's new book and he describes this move as a quick decision - its a great listen if you haven't yet FYI).
