Nirvana strategically using their fame to promote other artists that influenced them tells you so much about kurt and about Nirvana as a whole. Kurt - but all of them really - will always be respected by the underground for how strict their morality was when it came to how to approach being famous in the music industry. I believe that they never "sold out" and in utero is a perfect example of that.

‘Selling Out’ is making the album they want and expect you to make. Nirvana ALWAYS HAD CONTROL OVER EVERYTHING. They didn’t sell out in the least, and if any of you were smart, you’d recall the band realized that Sub Pop wasn’t able to support them as artists. They needed to sign to DGC.

Yea. Exactly. And if there is ANY good reason to sell out its to be an artist. Can’t fucking be an artist without selling art. It’s the one thing you HAVE to do. People mean to say that they changed their sound to appease boring people. That’s so very often not true. Most bands that intend to please as many people as possible almost always tried to and probably just sucked at it in the beginning. “Selling out” is barely ever a thing. It’s happened but it’s a very naive way of trying to communicate a feeling of losing intimacy with a band due to them being well known. People really project their own shit onto everyone else. They really do.

The mention of Stevie Nicks' Bella Donna album made me remember how much I loved the duet she did with Tom Petty (R.i.P.) "Draggin' My Heart Around" which was featured on that album!! I never owned a copy of that album, but my exposure to that song was via the video for it which was on major rotation back in M-TV's first year when they only had a relative handful of videos to play per-day and was a regular feature over the years to come. That collaboration featured amongst the best male and female vocalists in the mainstream Rock genre at that time, and their combined performances on that song were complimentary to, and well-matched with, one another -- both for authentically delivering the tone of the subject matter in the lyrics and for the musical arrangement around their vocal performances.

He has always been obsessed with CL. Lot of suits in the industry were. She thinks like them. All calculation and constructed image. They don’t get into the industry for the money alone, though they’re the ones who usually make most of it. They’re there for the power and recognition. Look at his eyes glaze over and his lip curls when asked if he’s ever watched the videos of Butch Vig. He doesn’t care about or understand the music. Though he loves discussing being in Chicago show when they “met”, and being in NY for SNL. It’s all a commodity to him. He and CL did a lot of whispering together before Kurt died. It made Rosemary Carroll suspicious. That’s why she looked in CL‘s backpack. How much he lied for her to cover the VF article. The PR machine kicked into high gear damage control to cover her, and she was relentless. She reveled in it and he despaired. It’s too bad he stuck up for her publicly in the media and didn’t tell them what she was doing in the end. That VF article was beginning of the end. He should have seen the warning in it. D-berg makes it sound like it was “other” sources, but it’s clearly her. She has always been the one championing drug use in the media. Wanted that Sid and Nancy image. “We went on a binge,” she says, referring to a period last January when Nirvana was in New York to appear on Saturday Night Live. “We did a lot of drugs. We got pills and then we went down to Alphabet City and Kurt wore a hat, I wore a hat, and we copped some dope. Then we got high and went to S.N.L. After that, *I* did heroin for a couple of months.” She was upset because Hershberg quoted her instead of fawning over her when she flapped her lips. They had a rep in the first place due to her penchant for over-sharing and her desperate desire for attention positive or negative. She was just pissed off because the article was accurate and came with consequences that she for once had to pay for.

I grew up in the Seattle area. I saw Nirvana when they were playing battle of the bands at high schools. I'm a fan of Kurt's, of Nirvana, of all the "grunge" music that came out of my home town. Listening to Danny Goldberg compare Kurt and Courtney to John and Yoko makes me puke. Guys like Goldberg who swooped in to cash in on (and generate) the hype that swirled around Nirvana in 1991-1992 are nothing but corporate greed pigs of the highest order. The sad part was that everybody, even the most casual fan, much less those closest to Kurt, could see how TERRIBLE Courtney was, both as a human being in general, and as a "partner" for Kurt. Goldberg was at best an enabler of the disfunction that ultimately destroyed Kurt, all the while lining his pockets. While it is nice to laud Kurt's talent and artistic vision post mortum, and portray him as being "competitive", people like Danny Goldberg and Courtney Love seem to use such praises as a means to exculpate themselves from the tremendous harm they did to him at the time, and entirely avoid taking any responsibility for the truth, which is--> they were the very agents most directly responsible for his tragic, and preventable, suicide.

Blaming others for someone's suicide is extremely distasteful. No one is to blame. Kurt Cobain had a plethora of problems and didn't deal with them accordingly... sadly. Not because he didn't want to, but because he couldn't. If he'd had a happy upbringing, for instance, he wouldn't have got involved with drugs... Courtney Love made the decision to improve her life for her daughter, but he was far gone into his depression and drug use. Fame was a bad ingredient into the mix. Not to mention his undiagnosed stomach problem that was so horrible. Many fans direct their hurt from his passing to his wife. 21:00 Bingo...this is thing that gets misremembered by most people. Pearl Jam was actually a more commercially successful band than Nirvana before Cobain died. By the time 1993 rolled around In Utero actually was not a huge album when it came out(it debuted well but fell off the charts quick)... Pearl Jam's Vs which came out a few weeks later was a massive success so Pearl Jam had 2 mega albums in a row whereas Nirvana had 1. It wasn't until Cobain's suicide that Nirvana obtained this next level success and all of their albums picked up a lot of sales after he died. Prior to Kurt's death Nevermind sold 5 million albums and In Utero sold 1 million. Pearl Jam on the other hand sold 6 million copies of Ten and 5 million copies of Vs. I'm only bringing this up because this part of the history gets confused as everyone thinks Nirvana was the biggest band during the grunge wave because of the entire "knocked Michael Jackson off the charts" which is an amazing thing but it's a false narrative if you try and measure who was actually bigger band and I'm a bigger Nirvana fan than Pearl Jam. Facts should be accurate. Remember in the fall of 1993 it was Eddie Vedder on the cover of Time Magazine...thats how big Pearl Jam's Vs was at the time but when Kurt died 6 months later he became the clear voice the generation. content.time.com/time/covers/0,16641,19931025,00.html
@dummytree5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I always mention this fact myself, thanks for bringing that up. People always think Nirvana was gigantenormous when Kurt died - they weren't. Actually, their popularity was coasting a bit with "In Utero", even if they were still, of course, successful. Nirvana hit big with "Nevermind" but didn't tour the US with it. In the meantime, Pearl Jam was everywhere and Nirvana kind of lost momentum (which is probably, to an extent, what they wanted, even if Kurt was also paranoid about being broke again). It's not surprising in that, in my opinion, "Ten" is a very typical album of 70s classic rock in a way done in 1991 - it could appeal to a lot of people. I think "Nevermind" was actually more extreme than "Ten". The Pumpkins' "Siamese Dream" , that came out around the same time as "In Utero" and "Vs" was also a big seller in the US than "In Utero" at the time. That said, it's a US perspective. I'm french and Nirvana was the biggest band of the bunch in France when Kurt was alive, hands down. Pearl Jam only got to play a club in Paris when they toured for "Ten" - Nirvana played a 7000 seats venue, and they played well attended venues for the In Utero tour as well. Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden all played clubs in Paris when Nirvana was around. Actually, Soundgarden were playing a 1500 capacity parisian club when they were told that Kurt was dead. These bands enjoyed much more success locally after Kurt's death (as a new generation of teens got into Nirvana and "grunge"/alternative music). Of course, Soundgarden had opened for Guns n' Roses in Paris in 92 - but as I was saying, they were just opening up and most people there didn't know them yet! So, Nirvana was the only band of its kind that was big in France at the time - and of course it only grew post April 1994.
@freeecountryy5 жыл бұрын
Don't forget that Nirvana was freaked out by the level of fame they achieved, and were purposely putting out a record that was more abrasive and "challenging" in order to be true to themselves and what they were all about. With all the pressure to make a Nevermind II, they decided to record with Albini and release songs like "Tourettes" and "Scentless Apprentice." No disrespect to PJ btw. Happy they're still doing it.
@dummytree5 жыл бұрын
Of course! "In Utero" was a conscious move...Even "Incesticide" was also a low-key release that kept the audience fed as there was no new album recorded by late 92, but also a statement of "this is what we were/are" with more extreme tracks like "Beeswax" or "Hairspray Queen". It didn't sell much but it was out there, and a great compilation period! No disrespect to PJ at all, I like them a lot!

The last thing I wanted was for him to feel he was being pushed into something mainstream he didn't like, and as a practical matter Time covers had been a mixed blessing to rock artists over the years. However, I later learned that Kurt had second thoughts about having blown it off." -from Danny Goldberg's book Serving the Servant: Remembering Kurt Cobain. Page 232, Chapter 13.

When talking with a client with that in mind and years of experience I'd have the good sense to say...oh you want to overshadow madonna? Ok thats a great goal....let me see you dance......um ok....let me hear you sing.....ummmm ok...next!
@freeecountryy5 жыл бұрын
Sonic Youth was a band that gave labels and managers etc a "cool factor." They were the reason Nirvana signed with both Gold Mountain management and DGC. The reason he's writing books and has a long and storied career (whatever anyone has to say about it) and you're commenting on KZbin is because some people have vision. No disrespect to you, as you may be fulfilled and successful in your own right, but if you can't understand why people were mining the underground in the late 80's/early 90's, and signing bands like Nirvana and Hole, then you're hopeless.
@TheSickNeeds5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for speculating on my success. Complimenting me then following up by tearing me down by speculating that I'm hopeless makes me think you've had a certain degree of success yourself as its a classic management position type move to draw someone in with a compliment to gain their ear and then tear them down. I'm well aware how and why Sonic Youth was used and how it became possible after SST screwed them out of what at the time would have been a great deal of money to either party. Maybe I should have expanded on my comment to include that at that point its likely that Danny Goldbergs career was more of a hobby and maybe even a passion because with his past success its not likely he wasn't well situated financially so banking on some long shots wasn't as great a risk as it would be for others who had yet to establish themselves. Then again maybe he had poorly invested and was digging himself out and the stakes weren't as high dealing with then indy bands. I'm not the type to google peoples net worth so really its all speculation.

I think Courtney sort of ended up being a package deal at the time!lol I don't know anything about management, I'm not in the "music business", I just write my own songs, but I'm guessing a manager would have to deal with everything that is in their clients' life, & that case it happened to be a new ambitious wife. It just seems more pronounced now, since we have people who know more about marketing & are able to "sell an artist" when there's many others who really have something meaningful to say & it's certainly not repeating "Gucci gang" hundreds of times like a broken record! Not RocknRoll, but "music business" nonetheless. I'd pick Hole over that crap musak any day, but some inner city kid would probably rather have "Gucci gang". Internet really changes things too, so who knows what we'll have next. I'm not optimistic at the rate society is going! I think we're all screwed & it doesn't matter whether rich or poor. Honor, morals & ethics have been going down the drain while everyone focus's on profits & sales & getting on the charts. But since I know nothing about the "music business", I guess it'll just keep happening until the world explodes, or implodes by the weight of too many egos! Management seems really hard!lol

He is wrong about SNL. The band "Fear" was on in like 1980 and the place got trashed and after that they banned Hardcore punk rock bands from SNL. The Clash is not hardcore punk...i dont even know if i would call them punk at all? But yeah Fear destroyed the set and got punk banned from SNL until nirvana played in the 1990s.

I don't understand how some people call recording Nevermind "selling out" - it was by far Cobain's best album, best songwriting, and the production is obviously sonically better. Catchier, yes - but compromised, no. Unless you call adopting a more radio-friendly sound an all-through-compromise.

Bleach was actually incredible. I got Bleach in 1989 and absolutely loved it. I was always a thrash metal fan, but Nirvana was excellent.

The interviewer seems kinda clueless. I feel like most people in the world of rock know that Green Day was not big until Dookie came out in mid '94, after Kurt's death. And he also mentions MTV Cribs. I don't know if he was trying to be funny, but that was clearly years later and kind of a dumb joke.

@Ian Curtis Courtney is doing everything and I mean EVERYTHING she can to really nail in the suicide theory because a sequel to "Soaked In Bleach" is in the making.
@KCobainFan4Ever5 жыл бұрын
@Ian Curtis you're right that Tom did say that there were things he was saving for when the case is reopened, but he also said at a different time, that there wasn't enough time to fit all the evidence into one movie, so they tried to just get out the most important information. There's so much more information though, you can tell by reading cobaincase.com that so much had been left out, but it's because there wasn't enough room. I think about the facts that were left out of the first movie, and really look forward to the second one!! I don't know if I'd commit to the case never being reopened, but I understand your thoughts on that because I've thought it too, and that might be the case sadly, but did you happen to take a look at the thousands upon thousands of people that left hate comments on Courtney's page after "SIB" came out?? She had to go in and block so many people, it took her weeks to do it!!! That and removing the comments. From what I saw at that time, we were a lot closer than what I'd thought we'd be!! Maybe this next movie will not only shed more light on more things surrounding the case, but as a result, get more public outcry for the case to reopen. The thing is to never give up!! Plus I think about the law of attraction and visualize the day she's locked up, and this new movie being the catalyst for that. It could happen!!

If seems like there’s a cover up that’s bigger than Courtney covering something up. It seems like the police are really working against it, even though I’m reality it should be taken seriously.

The Clash weren't the only other "punk" band to play SNL -- he forgot to do his homework on the subject, 'cuz Fear played a now-infamous gig for SNL on Halloween of 1981 which caused them to be banned from the show for a life (a status which exists still to this day; while other previously-banned artists eventually got their "lifetime" bans revoked*)
