HOLY SHIT, I LOVE THIS. I think where a lot of artists fall short of trying to cover "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is that it feels too much like just somebody else singing the song without their own spin/flavor on it, but like, this FEELS like a Halocene song. That's what I love about so many of your covers, it doesn't just feel like a retread of the original track, it FEELS like something y'all would make, and that's especially the case here. You kept the core elements of the original song, but played to your strengths and amplified certain elements to really make it your own! Awesome job once again!

This is by far one of the better covers Halocene has made this year. And lemme tell ya why: I've been a fan of Halocene for years. I, specifically, have NOT been a fan of Nirvana for years. I think their music is stale in taste and Kurt Cobain simply got lucky by getting big. Not lying, I was very hesitant to click on this cover because I hate Nirvana with a passion. But I was very surprised with the result. This song is so dissimilar to the original, Halocene did it in such a gorgeously new and fresh way that it's astounding that the original was made by who it was. The intricacy of Brad's solo was astounding, Joe's drumming skills were impeccable as they always are, and Addie's diversity with her vocals is simply breathtaking to hear. Not to mention Brad's final scream as the final chorus starts. This has made for a fan-fucking-TASTIC cover. Amazing work, Halocene. Love you to bits.

Quite interesting. I'm an old man, was in my teens when Nirvana was the only thing that mattered to us. This cover felt weirdly alienating to me, can't quite put my finger on it, but it's as though the thing that resonated with us back in the day is being reinterpreted. For me, it brings back some memories, but feels disconnected to what made this particular song resonate with us back in the day. I suppose this is to be expected, as times change, and young people now reinterpret this song in a way that makes sense to them today. Still, I'm going to be the old bore and attempt to shed some light on what made this song so special back in the early 90s. Grunge was essentially a continuation of the whole Punk thing, but punks were getting older, and to us, the whole punk thing was getting stale (or "cringe" as my kids say). They would continuously rant about anarchy, and how Maggie Thatcher and Reagan were the devil. Punks tended to be very political in their music, and especially in conversation. We were tired of it. We did agree that the politics of the 80s was crap, but rather than fighting it, we wanted to be removed from it all. We wanted to close our eyes, withdraw from it all, and escape in something we enjoyed. Like all kids, we felt ignored, like there was nothing for us to do, and nobody would hear us. When asked, all we really wanted to do was follow in the footsteps of the Punks and raise our middle finger to the powers that be, while simultaneously raise the other finger to those punks who kept believing that their larping circle jerk about anarchy meant anything. We were standing in the middle, flipping off both sides. The lyrics of the song reflected this sentiment so perfectly. The feeling of not belonging, and not being heard: "hello (x), how low". Not wanting to be an activist, wanting to be left alone by both sides: "with the lights out, it's less dangerous", and that typical teenage angry entitlement, and a desire to escape: "Here we are now, entertain us". If anyone actually asked us what we wanted in terms of entertainment, though, we wouldn't be able to tell you (we felt stupid), and wanted you to F-off (and contagious), once again followed by the demand to be entertained, and some random rhyming words - a pointless song about nothing. I could probably go through every single word in the song, but it's essentially all about us wanting something, anything, that was uniquely ours. At gigs we trashed things, because that was what you did (punks set the example we followed on that one), but rather than some unifying ideal that brought us together, it was our desire to not have to deal with ideals. This entire song, to us, could be summarised in "F-off Punks, F-off politics, F-off , but now what...".
