Hello! Have you ever heard of the viola jokes? :)) Violas are not only parts of many jokes but also are instruments that have serious duties in the orchestra. Today, with Efdal Altun, we talked about both the history and techniques of the viola. As a bonus, Efdal Bey taught me how to play the viola :))
What is Viola? (Wikipedia)
The viola is the second member of the string instrument family and its shape resembles the violin, but is slightly larger than the violin. It is also called Alto. Its physical structure is very similar to the violin. The violin family has a middle sound amongst all the musical instruments and is located between the violin and the cello. It's body length is around 41 - 45 cm.
The notes are written with the third line 'do' key. The 'SOL' key is used for high notes. The viola also has four strings and is tuned as DO, SOL, RE, LA at exactly five intervals.
The viola is technically very similar to the violin. Finger and bow technique, positions and methods of obtaining different sounds' types are no different from the violin. But the viola generally has a dark, deep and crucial sound.
Each of the strings has a unique personality. The sounds from La string are heard sweet and moderate. Re string has a soft tune. The sol string produces very rich timbres, the bottom Do string, with its original sound type, is usually a serious and dominant guide. It is reminiscent of tolerance and reassuring sensitivity. It is effective in describing pain, sadness and love with the deep alto sound. While it resonates thrilling screams with deep sounds that can sometimes reach hardness, sometimes it can turn towards sweet grinding.
The viola, that contains these features, is given the task of sounding the middle parties of harmony accompaniment in the orchestra. Because the sound field of the viola is in the middle of the orchestra sound field. In order to take advantage of its features, this instrument is also assigned to perform characteristic melodies.
