If only they had spent as much time on the game as they spent on this intro video. This blew me away when I first saw it, then I played the game and ended up going back to the far superior 97 version. Way too many bugs in this one as well.

I just noticed it now. As the cars enter the Monaco tunnel, 0:40 seconds in, the song introduces some reverb. But then, as the cars exit the tunnel, the reverb is gone!

Oooh so Was development really that strained? I’d love to hear the stories on the development on this game. I interviewed Martyn Chudley from Bizarre Creations years ago who said VS where offered their code from their game but decided to go alone.

@@L1verpool1 If I remember rightly, the musician at Visual Science was struggling with the music style on their pool game, so I was flown up to Dundee to give some direction and get things moving. I was only there for two days and on the first day in their office, the F1 producer came up and said "The F1 intro hasn't got any sound and we need it done for tomorrow. Can you do it while you're here?". And so I rushed it all together on unfamiliar equipment. Luckily there was a guitar available.

Pygnosis became "Sony Studio Liverpool" and they continued to make all the F1 games up to the final one to date on the PS3. So there's no giving back to be done as they had them already.

Have you ever noticed that the car models in that game were 2 years old? For example the 2Ferrari weren't F300 (1998 car), but clearly F310 (1996).

Feel sorry for Mika Hakkinen. In his championship years of 98 and 99 his appearances in F1 games were ruined by terrible developers.

The developer changed. Bizzare Creations (famous these days for PGR) developed the first two games but then went their own way. F1 98 was developed from scratch in a few short months by a little known inexperienced development team called Visual Science.

Mohammed Safian cause even though it was a Ps1 the graphics were terrible compared to the first 2, the sound was awful, the steering was unrealistic compared to the first two and the physics were awful

I cannot remember what track it was (Hockenheim maybe), but there was one corner towards the end of the lap where no matter how much you used your brakes, or how slow or quick you went in, the car could not actually make it around the corner without going off as the game always took over the steering and took you straight off the track. The game was awful. I loved the first two, 97 especially, and was blown away by this intro at the time, but was incredibly saddened by how poor the game actually was. And I was a huge fan of that season, especially the teams and liveries.

Formula One to Formula One 97 major master imortal piece by the programers... Then in 1998 Visual Sciences studio with arcade sequels sloopy games destroyed the legacy... Microprose Grand Prix games on PC saved the F1 games...

I didn't mean that the skins of the cars were old (exept for Ferrari), of course they were right (1997 Williams were blue instead of red), i meant that 3d models of the cars were old. Remember that this game was released on October 30, way after the beginning of the season (at the end, actually). Honestly, i can't tell if the Williams was based on the 1998 one, but I'm absolutely sure that Jordan, Ferrari and Mclaren cars were from 1996 and then "re-painted".

@dave41184 - Have to agree. Different developers really ruined this one... Bizarre Creations had made both F1 and F1 97 but jumped ship for this one and Visual Sciences got it instead - with disasterous results. The series took one hell of a nosedive with this instalment.

My god almighty! What game was being played in that intro?!? Thats the game that I want to play, not the shite they released as F1 98. I mean that game was so bad, I thought at one point I was being unfair to it after all these years, so I went back and played it again... I was too good to it in my memory...it was even worse than I remembered
