TuroFM, I'm making my rounds to thank all of the videos that helped me. I did the same work with the same '06 Quest engine in place believe it or not. I was particularly concerned about the secondary sprocket alignment, but once you are certain that your No.1 piston is at TDC, the the cam keyways on those secondary sprockets align perfectly with a raised line on the back wall behind them. The primary chain sprockets have a line on the sprocket itself that run parallel to the secondary keyways and if that's not enough to assure anyone, the gold links must also align with the tick marks on the sprockets both secondary and primary just as you detail. Note to others: You should have another to help you remove and replace the sprockets as a set because it's a tight fit and it takes two hands on the sprockets and one on the chain to ease it around the tensioner. Also, double, triple, and quadruple check your links, tick marks, housing marks, and TDC indicated by crankshaft alignment before you button up. I even and turned the crankshaft several times (with sparkplugs removed) because I really wanted to make sure I wasn't hitting any valves. It took me a full week to do this but I did it and saved thousands. Kind of hard to believe it was all for a 50 cent piece of plastic. The secondary timing chain guide whine is gone! Thanks TuroFM!

Timing cannot jump if everything was done correctly to begin with. You may have misunderstood him too. Its best to turn the engine over at least several full and complete revolutions to be sure everything re aligns when Top dead center comes around. I was told it may take as many as 30 revolutions before cam phazers and everything realign again. Once you are positive nothing was done wrong and nothing moved THEN you button up the timing chain cover. I learned this 45 years ago on my first timing chain job.

Thanks for the video, this info was very helpful. I changed my chain,guide and tensioner with no manual,only your videos. I did not remove the engine, (what a pain in the a??. I actually think screwing around with the power steering pump was the biggest pain of job. I had a heck of a time getting to one of the bolts. One thing I was told to do from Nissan was to do the ECU Reset,Throttle & Accelerator Position Learning before I try cranking it over. I did that and it fired right up. Thanks alot for the video, saved you saved me alot of time with important questions i would have ran into.

Thx man. Changing my first timing chain presently and your vid is a little more confidence added to my psyche. oh, and about 2:50, that's RH on the engine b/c you're facing the front of engine. it might confuse some.

What this guy did was give anyone who was contemplating doing a(timing chain, tensioner, or a timing chain guide replacement) the ability to look more in depth at the type of problems you might have when chains are not installed properly and gives you some insight on what to look out for. Anyone can tear stuff apart and put it back together, but putting things back together properly is what many fail to accomplish. The mechanic that was taking shots at the guy for removing the engine form the vehicle and then stating that he was charging his customers for the job, um yeah i think its his own personal vehicle. I have yet to see anyone cover the whole job while the motor is in the car, they just remover parts and say "yeah that's the chain" . Cool reference video.

Its best to turn the engine over by hand first before EVER hitting the starter. Also, its best to do it before buttoning everything up ,unless you enjoy pulling the cover back off again.

Great vid....appreciate you taking the time to post and share your knowledge. I've poked around your info and some others and have realized that if I'm going to pull this apart I need to replace the secondary chains and the guide that mounts on the secondary tensioners. You pulled the sprokets off the end of the cams to get at those secondary guides, did you need to pull off the valve cover and put a wrench on the cams to hold them still while removing and installing the bolt?
@weivecar
@weivecar 11 жыл бұрын
TuroFM: Talking about the old guide. The top portion of the plastic, did it break off causing it to fall down? Looking at the new guide the plastic wraps around the top portion of the guide. You probably threw away the old one but just wanted to know if it shows if that portion broke off.

To whom it may concern: I have a 2004 Nissan quest 3.5 L engine and recently the timing chain was changed when I got the car back I was getting a code P0305, I installed new spark plugs you coils and new injectors, and I also check compression which was excellent any ideas as to why I'm getting this code? Is it possible that the timing chain can be off one tooth?

I do all my own work on my vehicles. I save so much money by doing it my self. so I will do it how I want. but it's a good thing I pulled the engine, because two of my engine cradle studs were almost rusted through. if I wouldn't have pulled my engine I would have never knew that and my car could have fallen apart while driving.

2004 Nissan Armada 5.6 mechanic says it needs timing chains replaced and he doesn't want to do it. A mechanic from the dealer came down to look at it and says it is a 15 hour job at $100 an hour. Does that sound right to you?? Some say it isn't worth it to fix, should just replace engine. Engine has 200,000 on it. What you think? Thank you for any help in advance!!

well I am going to be 64 july, have one lung and I am finishing up replacing timing chains and its not hard it is just a lot of work. I spoke to someone that works at advance auto that owned a maxima, he said he replaced the chains and 10k later it happen again. so' all I will say is this, I bought all new motor mounts off Amazon prob 2 yrs ago, but I am not here in the USA for 6 months of every year, as I was pulling it apart I took the new mount I had replaced off and noticed that the ear was broken off and from the looks it happen some time ago, I paid $129.00 for this chain kit and now after seeing this mount I am sort of sorry I didn't buy the 259.00 kit which I believe was a Nissan mfger. we ll I guess its a wait and see cause if it comes to doing it again I will, I have the car ready for paint also, painting it the same navy blue it was from factoryr. I have bought many parts from Amazon not all for this car, I live next to a salvage yard and sometimes buy a car to repair I go slow but I get it done and done right. I have had some bad times even with parts from NAPA, bad rotors, did a brake job on an f150 and whacked the front rotor to free it up and it actually broke! crap metal, suppose to be made with steel but the chinese are using cast iron which means it will heat up and warp and also if you hit it with a hammer it will break... happy motoring men!

Of course, Nissan could have made engine mounts integral with the engine and welded them to the chassis. Timing chains greatly mitigate injury in a high speed collision, as well as prevent cell phone static. Silly comment # 356.

I don't do this for a living. I would guess here in AZ mechanics would charge anywhere from $60-90/hour. You can expect to pay more at a dealer since they quote their "Labor Fee" book and it states that the motor needs to be removed while it is not necessary to remove the motor. At the end of this video I quote some other KZbinrs that show how to do the repair with motor in vehicle. There are pros and cons to both...

Delrose Mcbean I'm going through this now with an '04 Quest I bought with the timing chain rattle. Nothing I've seen on any of the videos indicates that a running engine with a noisy chain, in these particular engines, requires a new chain. That said, my advice to you, and what I'm trying to do, is find a mechanic who says, yes, we have done a bunch of these. Usually that place is the Nissan dealer, but if you can find a good mechanic who is now independent and has done a bunch of them, maybe he knows how to McGyver it without removing the motor. My local dealer in New Jersey is quoting about $1300 to do the job. And, that is just the tensioner not the chain, sprockets, water pump and all the other stuff buried in there.

Delrose Mcbean You dont need to take the engine out. I am a Nissan Master Technician and I Charge 8-10 hours labor [depending on vehicle condition] GO TO THE DEALER ! You should pay no more than about $1500+tax for the job.

Delrose Mcbean +NUTHUGGER2000 is correct, motor does not need to come out of any NIssan with a 3.5 motor to replace the timing chain. There is a fair amount of disassembly but motor does not need to come out.

Sadiq Almashaifari When you install, you need to make sure your cams are lined up before putting tension on the chain. Once you do put tension on the chain, you need to turn the motor over 2 complete revolutions by hand, meaning the crankshaft needs to do 4 revolutions, else you do run the risk of throwing your timing out of sync on the first start

You probably moved timming... you should have removed tensioner and gone back twenty degrees back on crank yo relieve tension from the chain... installed the water pump and moved crank back to its original location and installed the tensioner

This is a sad shame. Thanks to Renaults ownership of Nissan, u can expect this unNissan-like repair to be the "new normal" that depicts Nissans declining reliability along with other Nissan/Renault reliabilty problems.

TruAgape123 I worked on Nissans for years. They had quality issues long before they were bought out. That’s just a fact. Unfortunately, their acquisition didn’t help matters any.
