Just like the Chevy LS1, the Nissan VQ engine is a cheap, reliable way to make a bunch of power. This engine is also extremely versatile, which is why it’s found in a bunch of different Nissan models. It’s one of the reasons we bought two identical 350zs a while ago. You can tune ‘em, hoon ‘em, and boom them - and nothing matters, such is life. Now there are various VQ models but we're gonna focus on the VQ35HR, or “High Rev” cuz it’s the creme de la creme of VQs. This updated version of the VQ35DE is almost completely redesigned, with 80% of the internals being strengthened and reconfigured to handle a higher rev range. Other iconic engines like the 2JZ or RB26 might be able to handle more power and more compression, but the VQ35HR holds a little baby secret: it’s lighter than all of them. It's time for some B2B Engineering on the Nissan VQ.

I have 283k miles and counting on my daily-driven 2006 G35 sedan with no issues (that I can't handle). 25k of the miles have been under my ownership. My previous 2005 G35 made it to 265k before it got a bad oil leak, but I'm going to pull that engine and rebuild it for another 2006 G35 coupe (6MT) I have that came with a blown motor. Once I get that going, it's gonna be a track car! I bought both of these cars for $1500 each. They've taken a fair bit of work but I've learned a lot, and I have more faith in my daily than ever. In the end, I'll have two great cars (one of which I autocross/drift), have parted another out, and have done all the work myself. This has been my passion over the pandemic.

From being N/A with a Cam and Heads making 400+RWHP. To supercharging or turbocharging making 600-800RWHP and being totally reliable. Plus it'll be super easy to sell if you ever wanted to get rid of it.

No. They actually did an absolute shit job in the VQ37. Like, literally shit job. I had a 2010 370Z in 2011. Back when people still used forums, all you would ever read was how harsh the engines would rev. They were absolutely horrible to rev. If you hung the revs near redline; it literally felt like the engine was falling apart. VQ35 was nothing like this.

@Sic Semper Tyrannis That is not entirely true, on each individual cylinder, yes, but in that case any engine vibrates, however using precise counterweights, balance shaft, certain bank angles and sometimes split crank pins it is possible to balance out the entire block. Yes I understand that if it's off by 0.00006 there is gonna be a little vibration, but what I think he meant is that simply making the thing stronger doesn't not make the engine smoother or more balanced in any way.

I liked this video, as I'm a VQ engine fan. My 370Z has the further evolution of this engine, VQ37VHR, that is a real gem.

The 4.0 VQ is really smooth. Has a nice sound and decent power for a midsize truck with a v6. My mom has a 350z just chilling in the drive. Needs new tires. Shes just sitting there wanting to be driven.

My friend has a Nissan VQ 3.5 litre v6 in his Nissan Maxima Spec R and that thing is RAD!!! The exhaust sound alone from it sounds mental and trust me it gets up to speed damn quick. I know what you're saying... "they made a Spec R MAXIMA?! “ HELL YEAH they did
