I just want to say THANK YOU for your videos. 2 days ago the 05 quest started shaking and stuttering and the CEL flashed on. I keep a scanning tool in the van because the P0420 likes to come on at times and I just reset it. So the code came as the same cylinder #3 misfire. Ordered the parts on Sunday, locally, and called as a "what the heck" to my two mechanics to see the cost of labor. $300. ugh. So spend several hours on Monday looking at the videos to see how to do it myself. Very slow and methodical, and struggled with that one bolt on the back bottom right of the intake. If it wasn't for that, would have gone quicker. also, a socket fell as I was trying to finish and putting the two bolt on the back of the intake ( the two in the back bottom closest to the firewall, not the group of 4 to the intake). Luckily, the last time my mechanic redid the valve cover in the back, the green connectors were left unattached from that bracket. All in all, took 7 hours for me, which included lunch, breaks, two trips to the auto parts store for that torx socket and another stubby ratchet, since mine was too fat, and alot of latex gloves!!! But I saved $300, actually more as I got 3 ignition coils on sale for less than the price of 2 at the mechanic (if I took it there). I opted to do all three at once, with new plugs, because I wasn't going to do that again. 1 spark plug was actually cracked on the tip. So glad I did them. You Rock!!!!

Thanks for the video. I would recommend putting a large rag over the intake once the plenum is removed. You do not want to drop a bolt or anything else in the intake.

I found it a lot easier to remove the entire upper plenum with throttle body, and I highly recommend anybody doing a tuneup on a Nissan or infiniti to replace ALL coils at the same time to prevent having to take it all back a part again lol

Thank you for sharing your expertise !! Exactly what I need to do to my 2005 Quest. My No. 1 cylinder is coding a misfire. I haven't checked under the hood yet though. I'm hoping they put my engine in backwards so I can get to the cylinder easier. You know, like they do for European models because they drive on the other side - fingers crossed 🤞🏻

I am with you all the way when it comes to buying parts; in that most of them should be Nissan parts This goes with MOST things you buy. Yes other parts manufacturers will save you money for sure. But they often cause aggravating problems too. Believe me I have experienced this many times in my 88 yrs old. And so have many others had the problem. For what it's worth, I disagree with removing the "studs" when removing the intake plenum and EGR parts. Simply remove the nut. There is simply no need to remove the stud. Worse; when you remove the studs it is easy for the gasket to move from where it is suppose to be when installing it. Even a little bit it can cause MAJOR problems in the engine. I can not emphasis this more. For, IF that gasket moves slightly from where it is suppose to be, you can have a problem difficult to find in the future. The sole reason for the studs; are to stop this problem. Please consider this. Practically, this can be proven with common thinking. IE: Why are 3 of the intake plenum fasteners "BOLTS" and yet 2 are "STUDS"? They could have used 5 bolts and it would fasten the plenum the same. Again the studs are to insure that the gaskets are kept IN correct place. In fact the shape of the gasket is designed to stay in place; while installing the intake plenum (manifold). NO disrespect meant here. I am simply trying to keep DIY'rs from a problem when working on their cars; that happens a lot. Believe me. The same problem is with the EGR replacement. Never remove the studs. Simply remove the nuts and change it. This insures that the gasket stays on correctly when tightening. Again, no disrespect. I love your video's.

Just had my 2010 Honda Odyssey do the same thing last month. Immediately brought it back to the Honda dealership and told me that there was a class action settlement that resulted in compensation for repair and warranty extension for this particular issue. Honda changed out the required parts and changed all spark plugs. I have a link if you're interested in regards to the class action suit since you have the same honda vehicle.

A misfire can also happen from loss of compression in the cylinder (bent or broken valves). It would be better to do a compression test before replacing the coils. Because you might have spent time and money and still have a misfire.

For same reason which I don't know My quest was working ok when I was turnin on the A/C. sound crazy but happened to my quest , so I purchase one Ancel which shown P1800 $10 parts easy fix... I was so happy , but after 5 miles driving P0303 come back and this time A/C was not able to stop that P0303, so I started all what you did plus I ordered all those Nissan parts for the replacement and after all that work to be done and right, I Started my Quest and got P0301 and after while (2 minutes I guess) P0300 ..... Any Idea what can go wrong ? I'm trying to figure what is wrong Thanks again.

Been following you for a minute, and you always have great content. I have a p0300 code, which you explained at the end of your video was the last number represented the cylinder. P0300 I'm lost trying to trouble shoot which cylinder. Any idea? I have a 2006 maxima with 218,000 miles, and I'm thinking more towards the catalytic converter.
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 3 жыл бұрын
You probably already googled it, but P0300 indicates that two or more cylinders are experiencing misfires. You might want to take it to a mechanic to have them troubleshoot it since it's multiple cylinder having issues. If you want to tackle it yourself, you can first try replacing all 3 coil packs and spark plugs on the front side, and see if that fixes it (since the front side can be replaced easier). If that doesn't fix it, then do the back 3. Also the plugs need to be replaced every 100k miles anyways.

I've just done a "tune-up" of a 2008 Nissan Quest for a friend. It was misfiring on cylinder 3. When I got it apart, it was clear that the coil boot was faulty; there were electrical burns on the seam in the middle of the boot where it was arcing to the spark plug well on the head. Long story short: I succeeded in replacing all of the coils and plugs because their replacement were due anyway (though I still would have replaced them all because I don't want to do that again for a long time) and now she runs as smooth as high end scotch. But this is a job I never want to do again. Too much damn work just to change the plugs and coils because some nimrods in engineering and/or beancounters in accounting couldn't give the vehicle an intake manifold that's easy to remove for servicing the engine on the side with the odd-numbered cylinder bank. Another post here said that the owner got a quote from a shop for $700 to do the work. That's not far off the mark for the labor plus parts.

@duanedonaldson2262
@duanedonaldson2262 3 жыл бұрын
These engines have a problem burning up ignition coils, inspect your battery ground cable, it probably goes down to the firewall and then down to the transmission, it likes to break at this point and the large current produced by the coil has no way to go to a good ground so they burn up one or more coils. Give yours an inspection and as preventive maintenance add a redundant grounding kit similar to what the HIFI audio guys do. Do not bolt to plastic intakes or similar areas.

What if you're spark plugs are still good do you still have to replace them to
@dial2fast
@dial2fast Жыл бұрын
It depends on the mileage you have on the spark plug. Even though they are 100k mile plugs, lets say if they are 70k or 80k on them, you can replace it.

My wife's car has a similar problem, but luckily it's P0304... It has a 130K miles, so others are possibly a problem, but I think I'll stick for now with just the front center one, which should be an easy one to do right now.

So. Ok. The problem was simpler than expected. Makes me slightly peeved about the mechanics which replaced the spark plugs at 100K though. They potentially / likely misthreaded the #4 coilpack bolt and it potentially wasn't tight enough. There was play up and down for the coilpack when I swapped #2 and #4 (didn't notice it when I took the bolt out :-( ). I had to clean up that thread with an M6 tap and voila, the bolt went in by hand almost all the way. (I was very concerned NOT to go too deep with the pointy tap..., made sure I had at least 3-5mm clearance from the bottom of the hole - I checked with a gauge, and taped the tap off so it wouldn't go too deep... - used air to blow out the parts and oil to make sure that wouldn't cause problems, and checked the holes with a light. This 2007 Murano (In your video it's different) has a 1" wireloom right over the bolt, so it is very easy to get it in wrong. Torqued it, and while I swapped #2 and #4, the code didn't happen on #2, and when I checked the coilpack with a DMM it looked right. A transistor on the primary, and a diode attached to the coil on the secondary side. Someone (likely not them) foo-barred the bolts for the plastic cover as well all 4 were junk, which was the result of a second thread insert in the composite valve cover being bad. Take the cover off a number of times,. and that bad insert jacks up the bolt. Those bolts are ridiculous expensive though, for a NON-Structural bold. $8 a piece. You can likely get away with allen key M6 bolts and washers from HomeDepot or other places in the right length. They should NOT be longer, you'll possibly crack the valve cover! Lesson: Check the bolts for damage when you take them out, and hand tighten them. IF ANY early resistance CHECK! Hadn't I been able to fix the thread, this would have been a valve cover... Which Nissan wants ~260USD for (+ gasket). There are way cheaper ones on Amazon, but I didn't trust them.

Great video. Do you think that this is similar to a 2006 nissan maxima, US? i have a p0301, cylinder 1 misfire. car has a bit over 200k miles . Spark plugs are almost 3 years old, and maybe 20k miles. I also just had the firewall pre-cat replaced. Thanks!
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 6 жыл бұрын
The repair process will be the same for your car. If you are getting the P0301, then it appears to be a bad ignition coil, but I can't guarantee you that over the internet. Just make sure you buy original Nissan part for this repair.

Thank you for the reply. You used a torque wrench for the intake manifold. Is it necessary or could i get away with just a regular wrench? thanks!
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 6 жыл бұрын
You really should use a torque wrench so the entire piece is torque down evenly so it's not too loose for leak or too tight to warp the part.

went to canadian tire and told them i scanned my nissan and got a p0303 they suggested a spark plug, coil and plenum gasket replacement. Was charged 509 but when i got the car back the problem was worst, now i get p0300 multiple misfires. So i went back to them and tehy want to charge an extra 100 diagnostic because they say I requested the work done and not a diagnostic. so I agreed with the rep i spoke to who suggested what to repair. Gave in and OKed the diagnostic but now they are still waiting for a diagnostic because they cant figure oiut whats wrong. It is going on 3 days now. What could be the problem since they replaced the parts that would cause this problem?

Should have replace all the plugs and coils at the same time. My cousin had a similar issue with a Ford Taurus, he only replaced the plugs in the back and the coil pack, this is a single pack for all cylinders. Ran great for 2 days then died. He found out that all the plugs, coil, and the wires also, should have been replaced at the same time. It ended up creating an electrical imbalance between the cylinders. The ECU couldn't handle it and it burnt out the coil pack. He replaced it all and hasn't had a problem since. I am having a miss on cylinder 5 of my Maxima. I am replacing all plugs and coils at the same time. Just saying would hate to ruin the 3 three coils in the back and have to replace them again. And it is good insurance to make the motor as efficient as possible. Later.

Question: The factory manual tells me to drain the coolant before removing the plenum. Do you think this is necessary? If not, why? I don't want to drain the coolant if it isn't necessary. I have a 2005 Nissan Maxima.
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 6 жыл бұрын
You don't need to drain the coolant as I have done in the video. The reason the factory manual mentions draining the coolant is because it includes steps to disconnecting the throttle body which has coolant lines. And the throttle body is attached to the plenum, but you only need to move the throttle body to a side when working on this.

I have an issue and I'm hoping someone can help. Initial issues is the pesky PO174..catalyst efficiency below threshold bank 2. I purchased just 2 catalytic converters along with 2 o2 sensors. Took to Nissan to fix. They failed me. Code is still 🔥. Spent 3 grand. I provided parts. Cost is labor. Provided I had other stuff done like, struts and 1 wheel bearing. Picked up my car after 8 days in the shop. All suspension stuff came out ok. Just a bit of a noise now. Abs, slip and ATC OFF LIGHT all display on screen. HELP! CEL.
