I love how car Manufacturers are pricing a majority of their EVs at a price that only the higher middle class and upper class can afford. Where are the EVs in the mid $20k for the everyday person can afford?

Lovely car inside and out, and great to see Nissan provided a mid-range spec version to journalists to test - I get sick of watching journalists testing the most expensive, highest spec versions that almost no-one can afford. Unfortunately the price, range and charging speed combination for this vehicle leave it out of consideration vs alternates. Feels like the mainstream brands are determined to leave the door wide open for Chinese brands and Tesla to take ownership of the EV market. Yes I know Tesla keeps putting up their prices, but that just means their margins are heading over 30% (unheard of in the industry) so they are the only company with plenty of room to move to compete with product from China, or wherever, and still be profitable.

The 'low' 130kW charging speed is a bit of a red herring as it will probably charge a lot quicker as Nissan have installed an intelligent charging system that flattens the charging curve. Other manufacturers start quick then slow down as they get full.

The Ariya is a good BEV. Sadly, the development cycle for vehicles has dropped considerably and under perfect conditions the Ariya should have been released shortly after the 2nd generation Leaf to give buyers a BEV path upward in the Nissan family. This vehicle faces a lot of competition.

No, it is 1/10th of the cost for home charging - where most people charge. In my EV it costs me 1.1p/mile over 2 years of ownership of my car. This compares (fuel alone) for 10p/mile for a 2 litre diesel Passat that did at least 60mpg while I drove it - long term. Cost of diesel has gone up, my night time electricity is still 5p/unit (yes that is a good deal - but shop around). So it is MUCH cheaper to fuel and EV. I rarely charge my car (like most people) away from home - I always leave my house with 250-300 miles in the "tank" and even when I stop at a Tesla super-charger (the sensible charging network) it still costs me less/mile than diesel.

A Nissan is a Nissan, regardless of being EV or ICE. Reviews that concentrate on vehicle first, then fuel type, range, refuel time second, will be needed to start setting the conditions for viewers and customers to consider moving to EV's. Meaning, we need to get to where the fuel type, is not a major discussion, but the vehicle is. Regardless of looks, technology, planet saving fuel, until EV's all arrive with a stated 400 mile range (So at least in winter, you will get 150-200 miles!) and 30 mins or less charging time that works for the group with no off-street parking, or battery changing-out time, will 'change' happen. Manufacturers, Governments are pushing, but the 'pull', is still not currently strong enough. Maybe 2030 will be different, or maybe not in the way EV fans hope it will, time will tell. Workable review, interesting car - nope, still not made me electrified, as this car, would not get me to work and back in a day, let alone, then work during the day, moving around in it. Remember why people do not like EV range and charging times, 'The most expensive gift you can give anyone is your time'. Sat while waiting for recharging to finish, to just get us home, is not deemed good use of our short lives on planet earth with those we love and don't tell me we will save future humankind, because if that was the case, we would have no poverty, no greed, no starvation and no conflict or war, so please get real!
@Tom55data
@Tom55data 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure about you range problem - that is not true, you are reading the wrong evidence, the loss is 15-30% (depending on heat-pump or thermal heater) in the cold. Charging on journeys is not a problem, you are coming to this from a ICE driver - I stop my EV (and Tesla charger - so a good solution), I go for a pee and coffee and have to hurry back to avoid idle fees. Ie it is less time as I fuel up at the same time as drinking coffee. The first problem is the UK charging infrastructure is utter shite outside the Tesla super-chargers. You cannot by electricity with "money". The second problem you correctly identify is the charging for people without off-street packing - that is a serious problem Battery swap out is a red-herring - in the electrical industry connections (contacts) are the big problem and where faults occur, burnt electrodes - and if you have battery swapping then you MUST have a non-fixed electrical connection that will fail due oxidation (open to wet), and contamination. Remember - what did that battery you just got given hit while in the moron in the previous car.

Considering the equivalent 5 seater, big-enough boot original Hyundai Ionic Electric would've no doubt run 4+ miles/kWh under the same conditions, it just goes to show - yet again - that aerodynamically-inefficient SUVs make rubbish EVs... Being the pioneer of producing the accessible Leaf EV, Nissan should be ashamed of themselves for pedaling this drivel on the car-buying public - over-priced, inefficient... just feeding the cash-cow of SUV marketing 😡

Keep in mind this is still a “prototype” driven in the cold, and in what he stated was a hilly section with the 20 inch wheels that hurt the range. i saw a gentleman in Norway who got to drive one and doing a rough backwards calculation he was closer to 4KW (3.65) per Mile meaning the 87KW usable pack with FWD would be getting around 318 miles of range. With an average speed from watching around 65MPH (US MPH) the drag co-efficient isn’t terrible but not tesla low (which has lead to the model Y being a polarizing vehicle visually for some people, or even the EQS which is VERY polarizing) Also I know people don’t like SUVs but it’s how the world is moving, I would still prefer a hatchback but at least in the US market they are basically dead with a few exceptions.

I met those who drove it on that trip, and those were the numbers they got, and he mostly drove it on cruise control/pro pilot. He also confirmed that the car kept the 130kw charging speed almost throughout the whole charging session, so it's actually quite quick at charging.
