My AC belt was squeaking on my 2003 Frontier Crewcab XE. I had new belts and harmonic balancer installed in December 2023, by February 2024 I was getting intermittant squeaks. When it started getting warm in April, it would happen whenever I turned on the AC, and it cooling would go on and off. I took to Nissan on April 21, 2024 and they supposedly tightened, but continued to get squeaks within days. Finally, on June 14, 2024 I found this video and went under to check the idler pully for the compressor. I could literally turn the adjusting screw by hand it was so loose. Thanks Nissan. I used a 14mm to loosen the idler pully, then a 12mm to turn the adjuster screw to tighten the belt. No more squeaks and cool air constantly. I really appreciate this video for helping me locate the correct belt/pulley and how to adjust the tension. Thanks!

I have a 2003 Frontier XE 2.4L. My belts, no matter which brand I tried, would make noise. I finally ordered the OEM's from Nissan, and the problem went away. Nissan told me it is not only the length, but, the width of the belts. Nissan told me that the American versions, such as Dayco, are just a bit wider, and it causes the belt not to track on the pulleys. I did not believe it, but, put the OEM belts on, and have not had any problems since.

FYI the middle belt, the alternator has a long 6-7" bolt with a keeper on one end (versus a nut) and NEED to loosen that long bolt which the alternator pivots on or you'll strip the threads on the adjuster and/or bend the bolt. The other 2 belts use an adjuster that moves independently from the accessory that it drives ie: Power Steering and A/C Compressor. This is ALWAYS overlooked in these videos!
@rendor212 жыл бұрын
If you look closely at the adjuster bolt for the alternator you see the threads are SHINY and almost stripped out. That's b/c he didn't loosen that long 6-8" alternator bolt first.

I was able to tighten my alternator belt with the same small clearance at the end of that jack screw. It took less than two full turns of the screw, I estimate, to get to a decent tension.

I had the same problem with the "right belt was the wrong belt" on my 2000 3.3L Pathfinder Alternator belt. The issue wasn't the length, but the style of the belt side that wrapped around the pulleys. Instead of continuous Longitudinal design that matches the pulley grooves, Auto Zone's had a Horizontal across design. No amount of tightening would stop the "Squeal". Both types of belts are recommended at this store. Be sure to ask for the matching longitudinal groove type for your Nissan's Engines. Good video here: that takes hours of frustrating failure out of the picture. Pass it forward.

I have a 97 pickup that defied all the fixes I read on the web. Changed the belt to a Gates, then to an OEM, checked & lubed the tensioner, put belt grip on, used soap, still squealed like a pig .... until I discovered a loose lower alternator bolt. The nut got lost when changing the alt, and the bolt started to work out about an inch. Dealer wanted $13.50 for a nut. Hardware store didn't carry a 9mm nut in any form, Autozone had the bolt but no nut. 12 acre wrecking yard had 2 Nissan PUs only one had the right nut. $1.50 for the nut AND the bolt. Plus 2 bux to get in and 90 min looking. Damn cars, trucks, dealers! NO NOISE SINCE!!

I have the same model & year and I've got really bad belt squeal and what I think may be the smell of burning belts coming out of the engine compartment, so I likely need to replace all the belts (they all feel pretty dried out). Just to be clear, for replacing only the belts, can I get away without removing the fan or any radiator hoses? I have limited free time for this job and I just want to get it done as quickly as possible. Is it just a matter of getting that air duct out of the way, loosening the tensioners, and remove and replace? Thanks!

Which pulley is which. I assume the one lowest under the AC compressor (driver side) is the idler tension pulley for AC. The one up above which is also an idler tension pulley would be for the power steering I assume. Which is which? I need to replace both of them they squeal on startup. As soon as I spray WD 40 down into them near there bearings they are silent. I don’t need the one over on the left hand passenger side closer above the alternator mounted to a metal bracket that one’s fine. Any help appreciated. The names and part numbers to the two I need.
@wtbm1236 ай бұрын
With out seeing it it is hard for me to say . If the belt goes over the ac and a tensioner puley then it would be tenshioner pulley for ac . . Maybe take a picture to a parts store or take vehicle there , show them wich one and sure they can find a part number . Sorry i was not more help , but i see a lot of cars and do not remember them all off the top of my head
@Mr_Tecumseh6 ай бұрын
@wtbm123 Well theirs. 3 total. One over towards the passenger side above the alternator, that one is fine and two on the driver side one above the main belt rides on I’m guessing is the drive belt tensioner pulley and the only other one is directly down below lower than the a/c compressor, but close to it and I believe tension for it. The one over by the passanger side must be the power steering tensioner. So theirs 3 that all have that bolt you can tighten to get rid of slack. Power steering tensioner pulley, drive tensioner pulley and ac/tensioner pulley. Any other ones are just called idlers cuz you can’t set tension. Anyway I tighten all 3 a bit it still made noise. Than I sprayed wd40 behind the two on the driver side behind them into where the bearings are. It completely shut up and isn’t making a peep. So those bearings in those pulleys must be on there way out. I ordered all 3 belts and one of the two tensioner pulleys. I guess I’ll know for sure which one I still need once the first one arrives. It would be nice if Nissan had provided a belt diagram with the pulleys except with arrows to each of the 3 tensioners with their name. Would have made life a lot easier. Because you go in rock auto they all look similar, same thing with a lot of the other sites too. The one down below is closest to the ac compressor and is the lowest pulley on the truck, that one has to be ac tensioner. But the drive and power steering tensioner can confuse you. My guess the power steering one is the one all the way on the left passenger side (standing in front of truck facing front of engine) but not positive. The other two are on the driver side one up high one way down below.

Tech Tip! Use a tool that slips over your pointer finger! It's called a "Cricket" and it measures the exact amount of tension on the belt in both foot pounds (Ft LBS) or the Metric equivalent! Do the job RIGHT! Never GUESS at the tension unless you want to destroy bearing in the pulleys!

@DENicholsAutoBravado8 жыл бұрын
I don't think many people would have caught that NAPA is thinking a longer belt than other stores. That same belt was squeaking for a customer of mine. A belt deflection tool would have told me I was too tight by the time I got rid of the squeak. Just guessing. Way back in High School I knew how much belt deflection there was supposed to be by the book, but real world usually seems to need to be tighter. Maybe that book was from before so many accessories for serpentine belts, but you'd think this Nissan with so many belts shouldn't need to be so tight. The book answer, or my interpretation of it, seems to have been wrong.

Sometimes one has to tighten belts excessively , and nothing turns hard , it may be the belt or wear on the pulleys .

Great repair :-D, belts and a really bad battery clamp, it would have failed. I like your method of belt adjustment, makes so much sense, ive never thought about it, i must be stupid or something lol. Your clamp replacement looks spot on, people dont realise how much power goes through that bit of bent tin when starting, any resistance at high current robbs the starter of power. Perhaps the pulleys have slight wear and the original alternator belt too, it all adds up, that new belt looks like a much better fit on an old vehicle :-).

So, do I understand correctly: Did you change the belt to a slightly shorter one in order to get it tighter? And then that fixed the squealing? Also, at the beginning of the video, the bottom pulley had some side to side free-play when you pushed it back and forth- made a clicking noise. Is this ok, or does that need replacing if it clicks side to side?
@wtbm1236 жыл бұрын
Side to side movement , can be a little , but even the one in the video would not of been bad idea to change . I still used the right part number for the belt but different brand . I did loosen up the tension @ the alternator a great amount like you did but it still felt a lil tight, not bad tight but more than normal I'd say. The #:s on it are 19025176&19025177... Advanced auto said it was the OEM replacement #but I think a 1/2" Longer belt would do better. So as you were saying the belt that was right number but wrong belt could possibly be the belt I'd need. I don't see any difference in your engine layout vs. mine but our body's are different and instrument cluster too. @scottthornley54055 жыл бұрын
Ok, I checked out the video prior to doing a belt replacement for one fan/alternator belt that had broken on 2001 Frontier XE. Here were my findings: 1)A Gates 7355 belt from O'Reillys will fit, but is nearing the end of the adjustment on the large side. I'll be picking up a spare as this truck apparently has a history of eating belts. The spare will be 1/2" shorter. I did go to the local dealer, but they were out of stock on the updated version of the 11720-7B400 part. 2) The only tools needed were 10,12,14 sockets, a 3" extension will make life a little easier, but is un-needed. So, if you're 200 miles away from home/tools and need to BUY some to do the job, you DO NOT need to buy the combo wrench set. Save yourself some $$$ 3) This is a 10 minute job. Literally less time to do than to watch the video. It was nice to see just how simple the job was, and the tool-list, prior to ordering tools, purchasing belt. I'll update this comment if the squeal returns

If out of line , then something is loose , like the brackets holding it to engine . make sure all bearings in alternator and idler pulleys are good , not wore out . . If all is bolted up tight and nothing has play , then something must be hard to turn . I would prob loosen all belts and check for anything loose or bad like a bearing . with belt tension on , it is sometimes hard to tell if anything is loose . Hard to say with out seeing , but unless belt alignment is way off , it is usually something not turning freely .

@wtbm1234 жыл бұрын
@@jcalzada74 A little more expensive , but usually only need to buy it once . I think in the video , i thought a 1/2 inch difference in some of the belt sizes you get . and not enough adjustment for that .

Do you ever use "belt dressing"?
@wtbm1234 жыл бұрын
not really
@robperry52334 жыл бұрын
Belt dressing doesn't work with this issue. It's definetly a part number issue. I say this because I used can's of this stuff trying to fix my 2002. The squeel does seem to come back after drastic temperature changes, as in fine in the winter, squeel in the summer
@terrycullen62905 жыл бұрын
The squeal will return... the problem is the width. Use OEM belts only- I chased this problem on a 2002 for several months. Good Luck.

This one did not squeal any more after the new right size belt .

2.4 large is good, I had a 2.0 on another truck. It was so under power. In fact it needed a running start at the bottom bottom the hill and even then all other cars zoomed past by up the freeway.
