Joe thank you! this works for almost any Nissan with the 3.5l engine including the 09-14 murano! I used the felpro gasket plus the black rtv. no leaks yet. but man scraping is easier if you have a sharp chisel or sharp razor. My oil pan was rusted like yours too. Very useful information.. I have a question. Do I apply silicone in two layers? Below and above the gasket??
@JoesCarSmartsNY Жыл бұрын
I learned that I shouldn’t use gasket. A sealant alone is sufficient. I used a product called “The Right Stuff” gasket maker. However, any fast curing silicone / RTV type sealant will work. One challenge is that the engine seems to never stop dripping oil past the sealing surfaces. So I let it drain a long time, cleaned it and applied the sealant and new pan as fast as possible before more oil could drip down again.

I was just about to change mine out because of a small oil leak and I imagine the oil pan looks similar to that along with that oil cooler hose. I was thinking about spraying some truck bed liner on the oil pan and hose to help with debri impact in the future hopefully extending the life of it.
@JoesCarSmartsNY10 жыл бұрын
Your plan is a solid one. I was considering sandblasting my new pan and having it powder coated. I opted to not add the extra steps because I believe my pan didn't start leaking until around 120 or 130k miles and I expect to get almost that much more mileage on the new pan. I may be doing a video soon on replacing valve covers gaskets too because I'm still losing oil and think they're the culprit.

When I saw your rust and how easy it peeled away was taken back a bit. Curious would getting a can of BBQ high temp. spray paint and say adding 4 coats help or whole can in say 10 coats? Was looking at an added $10 of paint for rust prevention. Oh- Nicely done video easy to see everything you talked about and how to do it!

Mark E. When installing the new pan it could definitely benefit from added layers of paint. Another commenter here mentioned using spray on pickup truck bedliner. I was considering having my new one powder coated. I decided not to since the original one made it 130k and I expect it the new one to last awhile. Thanks for your support!

The only reason I had to replace my Nissan Max,with a 100,000 miles oil pan, was because the dealer's techs who did the oil changes on my car screwed up the threads on the oil plug and pan. The older oil plugs on earlier cars had taper threads where on the newer metric design cars, the plug is a straight thread making it easier to cross thread. Looks like your pan maybe corroded due to salt? I've use Permatex on gaskets like you are replacing.
@JoesCarSmartsNY4 жыл бұрын
Mine definitely rusted because of salt. I later redid this job without the gasket and used “The Right Stuff” gasket maker.

HI Joe just did the oil change in my Nissan murano 2003, just noticed cooling liquid coming between the oil pan and the gasket
@JoesCarSmartsNY8 жыл бұрын
You probably have a leaking hose that leads to the oil cooler mount. For something like this you must clean the area thoroughly and then observe where the coolant originates from. I would use compressed air and some paper towels or rags to clean the area. You could also use some engine degreaser and a garden hose to clean the area. Of course, check you coolant level. I'm sure you've already done that though.

Joe. Any idea what the oil pan bolt specs are. Dealer quoted me 6 bucks a bolt! Mine are pretty rusted so thought best to do it right, once and just put all new bolts. I understand they are 10mm, but how long and threading? I can't find any info online about suitable replacements for the 11110f bolts.. Great videos by the way, I'm going to be tackling a lot of similar repairs ie oil cooler print and coolant line, today confirmed my ac coil bad by mechanic. You vids are a huge help.
@JoesCarSmartsNY9 жыл бұрын
My suggestion for you is to pull one of the oil pan bolts out and measure it. Don't forget to measure thread pitch. I keep a basic tap/die set with the thread pitch measurement tool for this purpose. You should be able to remove one bolt by itself, measure it and reinstall it without any leakage.

Let it drip longer, don’t use a gasket. And use “The right stuff” gasket maker. Try to put that on and put the pan on as fast as possible.
@melissahuff84832 жыл бұрын
did you allow any set time for the rtv between finger tight and torquing or did you immediately torque? and did u fill with oil immediately or did you wait any cure time for rtv? don't know if it's necessary since the gasket is there and it's not a 100% rtv seal. the 7ft lbs/ 84 in lbs (using inch torque stick) busted my gasket and bent the pan holes. ordered a new set and trying a recommended 12-15 inch lbs. fingers crossed...
@JoesCarSmartsNY2 жыл бұрын
Okay. I learned after this original install that the gasket is not needed. Use RTV only, give it a few mins to tack up a little, let the RTV cure according to its instructions before adding oil. I like to use “The Right Stuff” gasket maker as RTV.
@nohedidnt819 жыл бұрын
My question is how is this holding up with the added gasket. Since the gasket isn't a requirement just the RTV. I'm debating on your method vs just RTV.
@JoesCarSmartsNY9 жыл бұрын
Good question. Since this video was made my gasket began leaking. The issue was that the oil slowly drips from the crankcase for hours. So even after cleaning it and prepping it there was still a little bit of oil which dripped into the fresh RTV and gasket once the new pan was installed. This caused leakage. My solution was to reinstall the new pan using only "The Right Stuff" gasket maker as a sealing method. I chose this because it sets up quickly and the traces of oil coming down from the crankcase wouldn't ruin it. I opted for no gasket this time since there wasn't one originally there.
@lagoskid8 жыл бұрын
and how has this been holding up?

The pan has not leaked at all since this was done. I've had several other issues with the car, including the engine swap I'll be starting this week at 188k miles, but no more leaky oil pan.

I am doing this in a day on Sunday. I got a fel pro gasket and consulted them directly on wether to use rtv with it and they said absolutely not to use it. So maybe that is why your original job on it didn't take.
@JoesCarSmartsNY6 жыл бұрын
That is possible. My second attempt at it I used only RTV, no gasket. That is also how it came from the factory...without a gasket, just RTV.
@lwbga6666 жыл бұрын
Joe S. You should use one or the other, but not both. I also see the video by a1 auto on this install also reiterates this as well. And like i said i spoke to fel pro a little bit ago and they said only use rtv with a gasket if it's on something like an upper pan where there are separations or breaks, but on a solid mating surface it's more harm than good. Good video though, this is such a small simple oil pan. Mine is the same rusted and seeping. Bad design. And hopefully this can help any future viewers avoid making this simple mistake. Cheers!
