Replace the glow plugs... Try a hot air gun down the inlet , see if that helps, If so- replace plugs...

what was the reason for this ? is the diesel too viscous at low temperature or something ?

Since diesel engines use compression and head rather than spark, they must be hot enough to combust through pressure and heat alone. The reason he didn't start till the 4th time was because he was heating up the glow plugs inside of the cylinders to preheat the inside of the engine a little to avoid cranking for 20 seconds and burning the starter motor.
