This was (and still is) my favorite race car of all time. I've always wondered what happened to these cars, so beautiful...glad to see they're in good hands and still take to the track!

Insane car! In high-downforce configuration this car generated over 8000 lbs (3600 kg) downforce at 200 mph! Even more extreme, the NPT-91 generated over 9000 lbs (4000 kg) at 200 mph!

That's if it could get to that speed in the high downforce configuration.

Absolutely beautiful cars. I remember watching these NPT-90s dominate the Laguna Seca races. They were fast and reliable. Great cars. Thanks for posting this video. From a former race driver.

The 1985-1989 car (GTP-ZXT) did run a VG30ET, then in 1987 Electramotive Engineering (which later became NPTI) manufactured a aluminium block for it, whilst keeping stock cylinder heads. I do belive there were many varients of the NPT-90 engine. One was DOHC, another single cam, some iron block some aluminium and they ranged in sizes from 2.5L to 3.2L depending on needs. NPTI should seriously be considered as one of the most impressive racing setups which ever existed.

Saw this car many times at Laguna and Sears Point. Brabham dominated for such a long time. Many back to back win streaks & championships. Great memories. Is 1990 the good old days already?

Man, this is cool! Videos of these cars are sadly really rare. Also cool to see such an old video :D

Yes you are right. I was watching some Imsa coverage of the 85 Del Mar race and thought i had heard them say John Paul Jrs Buick was twin turbocharged, but i watched it again earlier and Steve Evans just says turbo Buick. Excellent times for racing in America and Europe.

Very cool video, and such an awesome car. I got to visit their race shop in Vista CA while I was in highschool, it was very impressive. I raced slot cars with some of the npti employees

The Buick GTP engines were single turbo as far as I can recall, same too for the Indy engines. Now a twin turbo version might have appeared in GTP when IMSA allowed twin turbos starting in '88, but I don't recall. IMSA regulations only allowed single turbos until starting in 1988 when twins were let in and all turbos had to breath through inlet restrictors.

thanks for cleearing that up mike, and that guy talking in the vid saying 70% boost=1000bhp,amazing,god knows the havoc that 100%boost would be?1300bhp?
@mulsannemike16 жыл бұрын
Though note one thing, sure, 1000 hp, but that is without the restrictors. Starting in '88 IMSA mandated inlet restrictors for the turbo cars. According to John Knepp (Electramotive engine guy), that dropped power to (off the top of my head) 800+ in '88, and then 750+ in '89 when IMSA reduced the restrictors again. So yes, unrestricted, 4 figures would be possible though that's not historically correct for the time period the car raced. Amazing nonetheless!
@mikkopusa421310 ай бұрын
800 is still an amazing figure. These cars, if those were air resticted as new are usually kept that way in show runs etc. Having it unrestricted would require also some re-mapping or even a totally new ECU. Having it that way - ie w/ original restrictors - is more cost effective. That's basically the same with older WRC, F3 etc. cars those are seldomly run unrestricted, it is expensive enough to find or refabricate original parts

I always thought this car ran a VG30ET. However, you can clearly see that it is DOHC timing setup and the speaker says that it is a 2.5L engine so I'm guessing the engine is something based off the VGxxDE series.

You as well as I at the same track too I'd bet. There was NOTHING better then a 962 at full song down the back straight at The Glen
@zoomer4616 жыл бұрын
it is,i think they could see that without some restrictions ,that it was going to get crazy and the accidents were going to get far more severe.these cars were fast enough with 800bhp.

Didnt the March chassis Buick powered cars have twin turbochargers way before this. Ive seen videos from 85, 86, 87 etc when the the Buick v6 powerplant was twin turbo, yet the 962 had to be converted to single turbo. Whys that?

IMSA allowed twin turbos starting in 1989, and with that the Group C twin-turbo 962Cs were IMSA eligible (Joest cars ran tt, and many IMSA teams swapped to tt [Busby ran both IMSA 962 and Group C 962C in 1989]). But prior to that you are correct, single turbos for all.
@zoomer4617 жыл бұрын
how come imsa nissans are allowed 2 turbos? imsa 962's had to have a single turbo conversion.

What was the Max HP of this thing....Qualifying no restrictors do yall think? 1000hp at 70% boost....thats a tad bit more powerful than the VRH35Z
@cgeatches5 жыл бұрын
I was in the dyno when we made 1140 hp. Most I recall. Probably in 1987 or so. That was a two valve unrestricted. Never raced like that as far as I know but maybe for qualifying. I don’t know that the 4v was ever even dynoed unrestricted.

I believe the tubs were scrapped and new cars had to be built up. The team never got back on it's feet after that and even fielded just a single car at some of the last few rounds.

The first generation GTP- ZXT was a Lola chassis. This one is not. Made in house by Don Davendorf's NPTI crew.
