How to replace front brake pads on 2005 - 2012 Nissan Pathfinder.
Replacing the front brake pads on the 2005 - 2012 is not very difficult and can be done with minimal tools. One thing to look for is the springs located in the brake pads. This vehicle was missing a spring and as a result had uneven pad wear.

Thank you for this video! Just did mine today on my 2010 Nissan Pathfinder with the help of this video. I purchased from Advance Auto ceramic brake pads and only one of the pads had the metal tab that will eventually rub the rotor when the pads are wearing thin. I still installed them rather than put everything back together just to run and exchange them. Oh well.

Thanks for the comment. Not a big deal regarding the wear indicator. I do notice on some sets there is only one pad out of the 4 that has the indicator, and at other times there are 2 wear indicators that clip onto one pad on each side, and lastly sometimes two pads have the wear indicators installed so it depends on the manufacturer. I think you did well but just doing the job yourself. I wouldn't worry about it !! Have a great weekend :)

For anyone watching this video - NEVER replaced brake pads without replacing the rotors. This is known in the industry as a 'pad slap'. You could resurface the rotors but it's just not worth it. You will likely hit minimum thickness, and rotors are cheap. The pad and rotor wear together AND wear unevenly. The new pad will likely not contact the full rotor face and rotors glaze over time. This will cause poor braking and can cause a brake shudder. Also it is very important to 'bed' the new pads with the new rotor. Most brake pads will come with a recommended bed-in process which is doing multiple hard braking at different speeds then allow the brakes to cool.
@GarageKing
@GarageKing 2 ай бұрын
Not true in reality, but you are right that its best practice, but only because aftermarket rotors are cheap. With factory OEM repairs, only what's necessary to get replaced actually gets replaced. As for bedding in pads, its not really done anymore, at one point yes (like the old Chevy Lumina) but now a few moderate stops is all it takes. Just regular driving. Most manuals for new cars will tell you to take it easy for the first few hundred kms. When you buy your car new I don't think they bed in the pads.

Great video. I have started some of my own but just hard to do. Filming and taking the time much appreciated. I like to clean the slider area with a razor blade and grease as well slightly. Help from hanging pads and some pads maybe sand the edges to prevent sticking. Also. On back of pads I like to use the dampener also on back side of sliders to prevent squealing. A few pointers may be helpful. Razor blade works awesome to remover the rust or build up. If you no a lot about Hondas I have a question? If not I’m sure I’ll figure it out. Can’t tell if blown head gasket or cracked block but the radiator hose is feeling up with exsagust fast or thermostat is stuck but real trouble bleeding the Honda. I’ll get it situated, just was wondering your thoughts. Thanks. Bye the way. Great video.
@GarageKing
@GarageKing 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the comment, and great idea with the razor blade. I never thought of that, normally I use the wire wheel outside so the dust is not an issue. As for the Honda it sounds like you might have a bad head gasket. Normally I cracked block will not cause the radiator hose to pressurize. DO you have a pressure tester? Is there external coolant leaking on the ground? Also some of the older Hondas were known to have bad blocks that cracked. Normally a cracked block will cause overheating with an external coolant leak. A bad head gasket can pressurize the rad hose, and you don't always get an external leak.

You bet brother!!!! I learned the hard way too a long time ago, so now I take them off with the impact, or by hand depending on how I feel, but I always put them back in by hand. The bolts are very small, and fine thread so best to put in by hand. Really sorry to hear that happened to you, but trust me you are not the only one :)

@GarageKing
@GarageKing Жыл бұрын
That is awesome to hear and I'm glad you got the job done !!! The reason you don't have the springs is someone probably did them before and forgot to put them back in. Cheaper pads usually don't come with the springs. The good thing is your vehicle will be fine without them. All caliper pistons retract as the seal rolls back slightly when you take your foot off the brake so that releases the pads when you are done braking. The springs help with this, so what can happen is if you don't have the springs then your brakes will just wear a little faster.

if we don’t have a certain tool can u let us know what else we can use ?
@GarageKing
@GarageKing 3 жыл бұрын
Hey brother thanks for the comment :) If you don't have the tool that pushes the piston back, then you can use a C-Clamp (like one for woodworking) but be careful because when you clamp it, the back side of the clamp is going to want to push around the brake line area, so just take it slow to keep the C clamp centered on the piston in front, and usually the brake line bolt on the back. Just make sure its not on any RUBBER hose. If you don't have a C clamp, then the next way is to use a big pair of "waterpump" pliers. Google waterpump pliers, they are really common and you probably have a set. Just take is really slow because with waterpump pliers you are pushing on the side of the piston, as there is no way to push the centre of the piston. Hopefully I helped you out and if you have any other questions just let me know :)

Do you recommend opening the cap for the brake fluid when you push the calipers in? Great video!
@GarageKing
@GarageKing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. If you are referring to the cap on the master cylinder then no it’s best to leave it closed. Brake fluid absorbs moisture so opening the cap on the reservoir will introduce moisture into the system. What I do sometimes if someone has filled the brake reservoir and I don’t want it to leak out because someone topped it off is I open the bleeder, push the piston back and let the dirty fluid come out, then wait for the fluid to start coming out again after the piston has been pushed back in, and then close the bleeder and check the fluid level. Most of the time I just push the piston back and leave the cap on. If it’s too full it will just vent through the cap and then wipe off any fluid that comes out :)

@GarageKing
@GarageKing 3 жыл бұрын
Don't use heat unless you have and extra boot, you will damage the boot. Also on one of the pins there is a rubber thing and that will get damaged. See this vid and go to the 6:15min mark kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWHXiHydnaaAgNk It works most of the time for taking out stuck pins. Then afterwards take the pin to the wire wheel and clean out the bore in the caliper bracket with brake clean and a hone, or a good small wire brush. I have had to use heat occasionally, but I always make sure I have a rubber boot kit as they get damaged. Thanks for the comments and sorry for the late reply, its been a busy day for me :) Hope you are enjoying your weekend :)

Yikes!!! If it’s bad you should really take it in to get it looked at. Those windshields are bonded and actually provide structure to the vehicle. If it’s just a small area you could probably use some outdoor silicone (not acrylic) to seal the air leakage.

@@GarageKing It all went super smoothly! Thank you so much for this video. One question I do have... When I squeezed the pistons back in, a small amount brake fluid leaked out from I can only assume the filler cap. I assume this happened because I pushed them in too quickly?! I can't see or find anywhere else that it could have leaked from... and the brakes appear to be working absolutely normally... (FYI - I also cleaned everything up and left a sheet of cardboard under the car overnight and there were no drips at all from anywhere.)
@GarageKing
@GarageKing Жыл бұрын
@@davidbullenlimited2801 Hey there and thanks for the comment. You are right in that the fluid came from the reservoir cap. This is not rare at all. When your brake pads wear the piston in the caliper is "out" more so the fluid level in the reservoir seems low. Many times when you go for an oil change someone may "top" it off. Now when you do your brakes and push the pistons back in the fluid goes back up into the master cylinder, BUT you have too much now so it simply overflows. Thanks for the follow up and well done !!

Hey buddy, for the brake caliper to brake caliper bracket bolts the 2006 service manual is saying 32 ft/lbs. For the caliper bracket to the spindle (those are the bigger bolts) the service manual is saying 136 ft/lbs. Thats a lot of torque for the bigger bolts so make sure the threads are good. I do all the bolts by hand, and by feel, but I have probably done a few thousand brake jobs over the years.
