Always undo the filler plugs first. If you remove the drain plug and drop the contents of the transfer or gear box, then realise the filler plug is properly seized, you’re up a creek

Looks like your due for a rear main seal to

It's likely! There's a shitload of oil currently hitting the bellhousing from a leaky turbo drain hose, which would be most of what's under there, but rear main is on my list for things to get done and know it's done

I always make sure to spill the old oil on the ground, but is this step 100% necessary??
