Jonny, great vid. I used your advice and a scope to identify the knock sensor on my 2000 Nissan Froteir. Then used a 40" screwdriver with a slight bend towards the tip. Then slid the screwdriver over the top of the tranny and under the sensor, then a little twist to break the sensor and pulled it out from the top. The connector was fried, literarily melted into the sensor. Thanks a million for the vid. I was just about to start pulling the intake when I looked on youtube and found your simple step procedure.

Shame on that mechanic for wanting to do a job properly, technicians can't just cut corners like this, because when it causes major engine damage, you will come back and say, "look what you did to my engine"! This is a hack KZbin shade tree, you get a lot of views for making the light go away easy. Why don't you get yourself a peice of black tape and stick over the light.

@JonnyBarajas8 жыл бұрын
+Shane Sauers I would recommend troubleshooting the basics for a misfire code, which are; fuel delivery, piston compression, and spark. Check those before, usually the misfire of all pistons sets off the code ,and not necessarily the Knock Sensor being "bad".

@JonnyBarajas8 жыл бұрын
+Mike E I made just enough space to reach in and break the old one off, I would not recommend it, only reason being that there is very little space to carefully replace the sensor back in its original place. If you can reach in and carefully place the knock sensor, i'd say go right ahead. This method is used primarily to re-route and not to replace.

Yes it will pass. If a good knock sensor is plugged in the PCM has no reason to through a CEL for a faulty knock sensor. It doesn't even have to be bolted to anything. You could literally zip tie it to a harness and call it a day. That's pretty much what he should have done in this video since he rendered the sensor useless anyway, moving it to the plenum like that.

how did you even get your hands under the manifold? or did you just yank on the wiring and relocate?
@JonnyBarajas9 жыл бұрын
Raul Romo I had to unscrew the transmission bracket to lower the transmission and reach from below, but I knew exactly where the knock sensor was, because you can't see it. So I just had to reach in and push down the connector and pull it off leaving the knock sensor there. I got it easy because the knock sensor was the original and it was all brittle and the end just broke off. That way i could just use the oem connector on the relocated knock sensor.

I would not recommend doing this. Knock sensor controls timing. Be hard to pick up spark knock all the way ontop of the intake and would be inaccurate. Can cause engine damnage. Just because the code clears does not mean its a proper fix.
@tiztiz58397 жыл бұрын
dustin mceachern I always been told the know sensor is there to detect knock and and adjust if the engine ever knocks , I don't believe that sensor is actively adjusting timming .
@erik_cruz7 жыл бұрын
tiz tiz, Dustin is actually correct. This is a really bad idea and I would not recommend this to anyone. I'm a tuner and calibrate OEM knock detection systems to engines that are modified all the time. The knock sensor is a transducer (microphone). The ECU is calibrated to look out for a specific sound frequency and amplitude (signal strength) that a knock event makes. There are many moving parts in an engine that can end up making sounds close to or sometimes matching the "knock" frequency. But just like I mentioned the ECU looks at frequency AND amplitude. When the OEM calibrates the knock detection system, they run the engine in a no knock condition and measure the amplitude of the noise the engine makes as RPM increases. Once they have a no knock amplitude baseline, they program that baseline in the ECU and tell it to ignore frequencies below this baseline. So when ever the ECU sees a knock frequency above that baseline, it knows that there is a real knock event and not a normal noise of the engine. The ECU then pulls ignition timing in proportion to the intensity of the knock. Typically 2 to 3 degrees is all it takes to stop knock. Hopefully you can see now how moving the knock sensor from the it's location on the block and moving it to the intake manifold is a bad idea. The knock sensor gets a strong, clear knock signal on the block. But when you move it on the intake manifold, the signal is a lot weaker. And since the ECU is expecting a signal of a certain strength, the engine could be knocking and the ECU wont know it. And if the ECU does detect knock, instead of pulling the appropriate amount of timing to properly deal with that knock event, it may only pull the minimum thinking its ok when in reality the engine is still knocking. And I disagree with the car doctor. It is just as critical to put the knock sensor in the proper location on the N/A models as the Supercharged models for the simple fact the owner of the N/A model is more than likely using 87 octane which is far more prone to knock than premium fuel. Hope this clears things up.

@ronin61587 жыл бұрын
erik cruz, thanks for the detailed explanation. I was thinking along the same lines, but Im not an expert. Is there a possibility the KS could pick up *more* knock, ie noise it thinks is knock? I imagine so. In Jonny's defense, no this is definitely not the proper or optimal fix, but I think lots of ppl have done this on NA engines with little ill effect.

I have a 99 mercury villager knock sensor bypass method with video uploaded that gets positive comments. It worked great for me plus its not on the manifold--its bolted dead solid to the block. In the comments below several people speak correctly that to go in for a $15--not $50 knock sensor and get screwed and shoddy work that you dont know what happened is only for the fat cats that write checks for thousands and dont give a damn. I read the science below from a scientist but keep in mind it retards the timing RARELY yet it messes up and gives extraneous codes and other things. The shops (career criminals--HUGEST national ripoff ever done on the public--national guard should go in place temp mechanics and shut down the entire corrupt industry nationwide--put on trial immediately virtually all mechanics) HAVE A FIELD DAY--you go in and once its up on blocks then its "WE FOUND THIS--WE FOUND THAT--NEED $2000 MORE IF YOU WANT CAR BACK" Some say 4--$500 to replace the knock sensor NO WAY--what that means is WE WANT $500 TO GET OUR HANDS ON YOUR CAR--YOU SIGN AND WE OWN IT TILL YOU PAY THE AMOUNT WE WANT.

Wrong, knock sensor still reads correctly did it over two years ago zero codes, runs perfect,

@@josh65hend There is no way. I'm absolutely sure it reads no knocks, because it couldn't read one, if it happened. Believe it or not, your not more intelligent than the engineers that made the engine management system. While relocating the sensor is a logical and inexpensive solution, to do so correctly would require that you used a scan tool to induce a knock, and confirmed that the sensor read it correctly, and repeatably. Oh, and remember....spark knock can occur without being detected by human hearing. You can guarantee that if the owner runs 87, and drives hard....engine life IS being subtracted. Of course, no diag was done to see if the vehicle was indeed spark knocking due to a weak coil, old or incorrect plugs, bad gas, weak coil condenser, poor engine ground, weak alternator, bad battery terminals, or corrosion on harness pins. This is a ghetto fix, and it serves only to get the vehicle through inspection, it doesn't FIX ANYTHING.

@@whozaskin3639 crazy I did it 130k now have 190k and still no issues, I know people in my camera group how have even put more miles on it, and trucks are running with zero issues, but Yah believe what you wish

@@josh65hend the vehicle did not have a knock induced to confirm a correct reading on the relocated sensor. When a fact is indisputable, it becomes less about "believing" and more about denial of reality. The reality is that this knock sensor hack could get you in trouble, especially on smaller, harder working engines, and definitely on any vehicle running an aggressive tune....or heaven forbid...boost/nitrous. Spark knock can get pretty expensive.
