I have a 2010 Nissan Pathfinder with 113,000 miles. It also stopped while idling. I changed the spark plugs, changed the camshaft sensor both bank 1 and 2. It still turned off. Then I changed the crankshaft sensor and it seemed to fix the problem. Original sensors from Nissan is what I bought.

Hi Scotty I am a Technician at Nissan, the problem is with the Camshaft sensors at bank one and bank two, the oil passes through the connector and shorts them out, eventually you will get the check engine light on for those sensors… When replacing the bank one (right side cam sensor) make sure you remove the Cam and not the Crank sensor because they are close together.

@Luis, my Xterra is dying randomly and getting worse. I'm assuming it's the Cam and/or Crank sensors from what you and others share, but don't have any codes yet. Today when it died it struggled and wouldn't accelerate in drive, which is new. Have you seen that as a symptom also with those sensors going out? I've been waiting for codes so I know which one(s) to replace but may preemptively replace all three at this rate.

Most Mechanic's find it easier to replace a motor 💵 than actually work on one. Ask any Ford owner of a 5.4 3 valve from 2004 to 2010. Many of those engine's could've been saved by updating to a better oil pump and doing a timing kit O.E. of course. The labor is extensive and it was more profitable and less hours needed to just drop another motor in.

I had a 2003 Dodge Neon, and after 40k miles, developed a clank clank clank noise at low speed from the driver's side front wheel. Took it to a chain store mechanic who charged me for a new half shaft and install. Didn't work. Refused to give me a refund. Went to the dealer who charged me a hundred and fifty dollar diagnostic fee. They determined the bushings were shot on the control arms, so the control arms would need to be replaced. Maybe the steering box, too. Minimum $850, up to $1700. Before I committed to anything, my Dad, an electrical and mechanical engineer with thirty years in the job, with a lot of crappy used cars under his belt, insisted I bring it by so he could give me a second opinion. As he was getting the floor jack and jack stands together, I went to loosen the lug nuts. I fell flat on my face, they were so loose. The chain store mechanics who charged me for the half shaft took off the wheel during inspection for some reason, and didn't tighten the lug nuts when putting it back on, and they became looser and looser until the wheel began to clank. Neither the chain store idiots or the dealer who charged cash money for a diagnostic bothered to take off the wheel to take a look before scamming me hard. Take my vehicles to local business who have customers I trust, now. Also do a lot more of my own maintenance and repair.

Found a local mechanic who is like Scotty. Tells me the truth and doesn't over-charge me. Had a problem with my transmission. With OBD II device I figured out it didn't need a new transmission. But it still might need a new computer module for around $300 plus labour. My mechanic hooked up his expensive scan tool. Did some tweaking. End result, $65 labour and the thing is fine. There is a TSB out there regarding Nissans turning off while idling. Apparently, some of the ECMs were replaced believing it was heat that caused an intermittent issue. This did not apply to every Nissan, but some Versas, Altima and Maximas were affected. Some dealerships replaced the ECM under warranty and others performed lesser repairs.

It's an intermittent cam sensor. Probably the one on the driverside. A replacement at the local auto parts store is $10. Ten-minute repair. That 4.0 engine is a tank if you know how to repair little things. Mine has over 212k miles and still gets 19-20 miles a gallon. I often pull a small utility trailer with mine all the time, and no oil leaks.
@galenkovats6846

100% agree. Seen it before as well, sometimes the cam sensors just stop working (i think when they get too hot or something, tbh no clue) but when it happens it pretty much never sets a code. It's really hard to duplicate as a tech, but 2 new cam sensors and it almost never happens again. The rest is near bulletproof with proper service and care.

@@Etownstomp09 I believe you don't have to worry about the cross contamination issue after 2011 models only on 05 through 2010 have the problem with the radiator internal oil cooler leaking oil inside of the radiator and mixing up with coolant which would eventually find its way into the transmission and cause major damage. Plastic tensioners yea just about every motorcycle with overhead cams has them. some of the Newer Twin Cam Harleys they were having problems with their cam tensioners and chain set up, luckily there was as easy fix (but expensive fix) some of the after market manufacturers came up with a direct drive setup, all gear driven. Just a heads up, those pathfinders had a defect in the radiator where it would crack and allow radiator coolant to contaminate the transmission fluid. Once the transmission was contaminated the car would shake a lot. The car would still be drivable for a while until the transmission completely fails. Until then the car will feel like it wants to stall at times, and you will notice abnormal shaking. Check your radiator and transmission fluid for signs of contamination. I think it was only certain years that were affected, so you would have to check google to see if the one you have might have the defective radiator.

I am a mechanic. For over 20 years. Overtime debris builds up around the throttle plates and allows less air to flow through when the plates are cracked open. The computer learns overtime to compensate for the build up. Ideally use a product like BG and inject it into the throttle plates and also cleans the intake runners. Now that all the junk is cleaned out the computer can relearn the way it was originally. I do use a scan tool for this

After Nissan merged with Renault they turned to trash. If you're going to buy Japanese buy Toyota or Honda. I had a 2006 Nissan Xterra and just finished paying it off and around 75K miles I started to feel the transmission shudder slightly. I go online and first thing that pops up is class action lawsuit. I look in my transmission fluid and low and behold there's radiator fluid floating at the top. Nissan screwed over everyone with a 2005-2010 xterra, pathfinder, and frontier. Cheap design caused the radiator coolant to leak into the transmission fluid and destroy the transmission. They settled (what should have been criminal) the class action lawsuit that still screwed over every owner. The terms still had the owners paying a 2K "deductible" to have the tranny fixed. I then bought a 2016 Jeep in haste and had transmission problems with it as well (at 35k miles). Scotty's and many others videos and reviews convinced me to bite the bullet and just pay the $50K for a 2021 toyota 4runner. Dealership stands behind toyota so much they offered LIFETIME warranty on the engine and transmission.
