Yea there are options but sometimes laying on the ground stuff falling in your face, eyes, looking up, at stuff you can't see from the top. Sometimes that just makes some jobs unpleasant. That skid plate always has bolts that break off and if you want to put it back on then you have to tap, drill and its more work. Working on top is much cleaner and I have better arm control. When you get older these things are advantages. Depends on my mood for the day I guess also. Thanks for viewing.

Just wanted to say thanks for the video. Although I couldn't get the bottom bolts on the Compressor with my very limited craftsman socket set. So I had to do basically the whole alternator from underneath the car. Pain in the ass!!

Would have been a wiser move to upgrade the alternator to a Nissan Quest 125A alternator. Also it is easier to drop the alternator out of the bottom, the most you have to do is remove the tire if you need more access to the electrical connections.

I don't have any power options. So 80 amp is what Nissan call for for the 2002. It changes for the 2003 and up.

@@FixingWithPassion True enough but for the cost it's a cost effective upgrade and a direct fit. I upgraded when I went to a dual battery system in my Xterra

@@nightflyr1 True. But 80 amps is more that enough for this Xterra. If I'd had power window, seats, Fog lights...big amp for the radio then yea I would have. Would love to an Xterra have one with full power. I was going to try to drop the alternator down, but the skid bolts were seized up and did not want to twist them off, then go through all the work to tap, drill etc new bolts holes. Just to much work. Replacing it through the top made more sense and less work for me. Thanks for watching!

@@FixingWithPassion Thanks for the video. As stated by the other comments, I normally drop the alternator from the bottom as it is easier. But good move on doing it this way as your skid bolts are seized up. I also just used the 2003-2004 xterra alternator as it is 100amps to upgrade the amps from the 80amp alternator on both of my xterras. They are both electric windows etc... so it helps out a bit. Thanks for all of the videos you do on this Xterra, it really helps out when working on both of my 2002 4x4 Xterras. Great vehicles, I will keep both of mine for ever! Greetings from Houston, Tx. :)

Great video. You should never use an incandescent bulb in your garage or while working on any car. Many other garages and homes have been lost to fire using that exact same lamp cage on a cord. The filament ignites gas fumes when those type bulbs are accidently broken. I'd suggest using light emitting diodes.(If, the bulb was not already ) If so, perhaps my words can warn others.

Maaaaannnn I damn near had the top off got down to the ac with the four bolts and just couldn’t give it a little nudge. I ended up reading this comment then looked up a video to go from underneath and let me tell ya 😎 this is a YOU LIVE AND YOU LEARN moment thank you Nathan much appreciated

Thanks for posting. I replace the alternator on my 04 Xterrra (extra-terrify). Donot have to take out the mounting bracker. Remove the oil filter push lower alternator mounting bracket up and alternator comes right off from bottom. Installing in reverse. and change oil after

Thank you for posting! My 2wd xterra is a 02 so I really appreciate seeing the work you have done. If it would help you I have a digital copy of the factory manual. I bought my xterra new and have done all the work on it since about 69k miles. Been pretty trouble free. Just replaced PS pump and ordered all parts for steering that were rubber. 2, radiators, one alternator, brakes more times than I can count, timing belt, all belts twice, all hoses once. And the drive shaft ujoints and bushings. Any hints on how to get the drive shaft rebalanced would be appreciated. I marked the drive shaft prior to removal. Over all nissan easy to work on. Thanks again - if u got this far👍

Driveline Specialties can computer rebalance the shaft and it will be be than it was from the factory.

Why did you do it the hard way? You can just take off the one bracket that has the belt adjuster for the alternator and it falls right out of the bottom.

Absolutely, and driver front wheel off , and the plug was seized in Big time on mine , which I unplugged the wiring from uptop removed it and even out of vehicle it was a bitch to get it out , patience is a MUST on This job

Where in the north east are you? I got my 2002 in January and im amazed at how rust free it is. Came from Connecticut. Now that it's nice out here im starting to do everything I can to keep it clean for years to come. Frame is super clean, so im painting it with POR15, then bed liner over that, and then fluid film in the fall.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the adjuster bolt bracket thing hooked back up and the belt loose enoug to go back on the alternator. I definitely shouldve made sure it showed the reassembly i guess before diassembing myself. Live and learn. Im sure whoever fixed ir for me will charge 3x what they would've to just replace it to begin with now 🤦

Why didn't you just go from under the car, remove the skid plate, release the tensioner bolt, put the belt to the side, remove the electrical connections, unbolt the alternator and replace it, this is a much much harder and labor intensive way of going about it but i'm curious why you went at it this way ???
