That thing you mention, when suddenly you start hearing a certain reference everywhere, I think can be two things: 1 - The reference starts seeping into pop culture after the initial use (particularly if its from a popular song, film etc), and so it actually is getting said more often than previously 2 - You just start clocking something your brain didn't focus on before, because you clocked it the first time (you probably get this with noticing someone's face at school/uni/work, and then suddenly you start noticing them constantly, when you didn't before)
