I disagree with Ghostly Prison being a “F.” Ghostly Prison is one of the best cards in my Elsha deck because I have only a handful of creatures. It makes it harder for me to be attacked when I don’t have a lot of blockers (which is about 80-90% of the time).
@TioFranTV
@TioFranTV 3 жыл бұрын
I think the same. The only way that it should be a F is in a meta where combat damage wasn't relecant. Otherwise is a udefull card, I see a lot how people forgets the player with this card in play at the combat phase, even when they don't have blockers. Just think how many times they don't pay for smothering or ristik.
@MaSolSC2
@MaSolSC2 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if your meta usually includes 1-2 decks that go for win by combat (Stompy, Go-Wide, Voltron....) this card can save your ass. Especially if you have some synergie with your theme. It falls behind in the end game due to removal and big mana pools. But in my experience it forces the beatdown decks into a war with another opponent during the mid game, so you can watch the fireworks. Sure if you play pretty much exclusevly on level 9+ combo tables this will not work, but thats no fun for me anyway.

Totally agree. Fight an elfball deck and say that it’s not at least useful. Highest 30 cards? Probably not so much but if you’ve ever gone against a go wide deck that started with sol ring and mana crypt? It’s good, it’s has it’s places. Probably a C+to a b- IMO.

Landtax is a definite B+ in monowhite for the looting/rummage effects. It's also one of the few cards that can pull out enough lands to actually have thinning that is worth noting. If you start building around it and similar cards like Archaeomancer's Map you can get it to do more. Add in Extraplanar Lens, Lotus Field, etc... And you keep your count lower so the triggers occur more frequently.

I have to disagree with the Ghostly Prison F. It's not an A, but there are so many times in games where people say "Oh yeah. I guess I'll go ahead and swing" and you can say "pay 2?" And they respond with "Oh, I'll attack someone else instead" It won't save you from a game winning play, but it can easily redirect 10+ damage over a game, and it DOES hard shutdown token swarms. Also, Land Tax as a C?? Even if you only get one trigger, 1 Mana draw 3 is so far beyond the curve I don't get why you would cut this unless you were worried about your deck looking too competitive.

Ghostly Prison - as the token player, more than half my decks are go wide strategies, varying effectiveness but can absolutely shut down some of them if I don't have the proper removal in hand (I'd probably put it as a D+, though against me it's probably like a C+, I've liked it less and less as I've played - back 2 years ago, it was in every deck basically at our table, our decks were definitely all board based): * Omnath, Locus of Rage (I can't feasibly pay the mana for the tokens I make, there are ways to get around it like Warstorm Surge, but there's only a few options for that in the deck - primary wincon is to get a bunch of 5/5s and smash) * Slivers (naturally go wide synergies, I don't play any infinite combos in this deck) * Rhys the Redeemed (tokens tokens.. there's only so much mana to go around) * Kykar, Wind's Fury (anthems and tokens build) * Anowon, the Ruin Thief (going wide with creatures, and ideally mill a creature from each player to draw) * Hope of Ghirapur (voltron deck, not really affected) * Liesa, Shroud of Dusk (unaffected, though, it can matter sometimes if I want to play something in my hand and I need to hit that person) * Zaxara, the Exemplary (is a token deck but heavy mana strategies, main wincon is to get an infinitely sized trampling hydra to connect to face) * Meren of Clan Nel Toth (not really affected but I don't actually have a wincon for this deck, so there's that) * Krark, the Thumbless // Sakashima of a Thousand Faces (attempt at a high power level deck, combo deck, unaffected) * Rin and Seri, Inseparable (built to be more lifegain and control, so not too bad) Always love these lists - definitely agree almost every rating.

As you’re ranking these cards you’re not explaining really why you like or dislike them very much. I feel like you should go into detail a little bit more on why thinks aren’t good (swords) and why things like (path) is less good.
@Morrodin182
@Morrodin182 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. I don't agree at all with some of the ratings given though. For instance I think that grading ghostly prison an F is just a plain mistake. Do you want to play it in just any deck? Nope. Is it a strong performer in a certain style of decks? Oh hell yes: It stops go wide token strategies, it protects your planeswalkers in superfriends, in a stax deck it just totally stops you from getting attacked and so on. This is in other words, not a card you just play in an attack heavy meta, it is card you play when you know your deck is not relying on creatures to defend itself OR needs/wants protection versus go wide strategies. Just my two cents of course.

Loved the video and y’all’s content as a whole. Great honest input on stuff! I like to hear y’all’s opinion on new and existing cards. Honestly though, I would’ve given Path to Exile a B+. You’d be hard-pressed to find much removal that is more efficient than PtE that exiles a creature rather than destroys. Running both Path and Swords is almost like running two copies of the same card. Two copies of 1-mana “exile a creature” at instant speed is sweet. Al that said, I totally get where y’all are coming from with it. Sometimes giving someone an extra land can be a bit of a feel-bad.

Condemn is a very underrated 3rd copy and it puts an attacking creature to the bottom of the library. Probably a C+ to a B- for me. Oust is another powered down functional reprint sitting at a C, but Oust gets rid of Indestructible creatures for a cpl turns.

So you give Ghostly Prison an F because most decks are going to win with combos and don't care about attacking. If that's your attitude, then you are way closer to cedh than you care to admit. But then later you talk about how good Elish Norn and Cathars' Crusade are because you get a bunch of creature tokens and go wide and kill everyone. Yet, Ghostly Prison stops that exact thing. I'm not saying prison is an all star auto-include or anything like that, but it's way better than you give it credit for. I like it in Enchantress Decks where I get synergy for playing enchantments, or decks where I'm not running a lot of creatures so I can't rely on creatures for defense and need to deter attacks so I don't just get run over in the early game, and ghostly prison does just that.

@michaelpoerio9926

How is it Swords to Plowshares gets an A, but Path to Exile is a C. I'm also of the opinion that PtE is not as powerful as StP, but is the difference worth two letter grades? How is it EASILY replaceable, this is where I'm skeptical. What 3-4 other white removal spells do you find just much better that is instant speed and exiles for 1 mana? Works quite nice in 1-3 color decks. This is no pet card of mine, but I'm thinking a strong devaluing here... unjustly so. A solid B+ easily for me. What do I care on turn 7-10 if you get 1 more land? And I could use it as ramp, take out my utility creature later if needed as plan B.
@emerson685
@emerson685 3 жыл бұрын
Awesome video! The only thing I slightly disagree with is Elesh Norn. She's an A for me. I really love playing blink decks, and I can confirm that Elesh Norn pretty much shuts down my game. Turns out most creatures with good ETBs have a 1 or 2 butt. Just it's effect on getting rid of 99% of utility creatures makes it an A for me, and I don't even own a copy. To me the bump in power is the gravy, but the text that basically says "you're opponents don't get utility creatures" is the real text. And for non-CEDH, most of people's synergy is built into creatures. I just think it's power to shut down decks makes it good by itself. Just think about this... it shuts down Skullclamp in most decks!! Lol. Can't get stronger than that! Also, just writing this is tempting me to go order a copy. Lol
@zweis
@zweis 8 ай бұрын
If there was a card that cost 1 white mana and said "Sacrifice a creature: Put a basic land into play" at instant speed it would be an auto include in every white deck. Path to Exile does that, but it's also a modal Swords to Plowshare and somehow we're rating that a C? I only recently started playing Commander so maybe there's something I'm missing, but surely we can't be putting Path below Plow right?

Love the vid but y’all are dead wrong about Ghostly Prison. Not sure if y’all just haven’t played it enough or played against it enough, but 2 mana per creature adds up quick. It’s a massive deterrent in my Liesa deck, and it often prevents opponents from swinging out at you, even late game. Definitely a C+ at its very worst. And Land Tax is a B. It’s not just a ramp spell; it’s a deck filtering spell. Getting all your basic lands out so you reduce the risk of top decking them late game is crucial. That always needs to be taken into account when talking about Land Tax.

If you are playing Austere Command in more white decks than Land tax, fat yikes. You don't play land tax as a ramp card, you play it because it's usually a one-mana draw six+ (in normal commander). If cards like Cathars' crusade can regularly make it around the table then you're gonna always be happy with Land Tax.

You guys have ZERO respect for how disruptive the Ghostly Prison/Propaganda/Sphere of Safety can be to the tempo of your opponents. Yes, sometimes your opponents will have plenty of mana to circumvent these however more often they will be faced with situations where they can double spell/drop a fatty OR they can pay to attack you. These work even better against wide board states and can be an affective deterrence. Often making your opponents choose between developing their board or attacking you is enough to dissuade them. That said they don't belong in every deck and need a little build around to reach maximum efficiency.

I really don't agree with Silence being F. Its trash if you treat it as a sorcery to protect your own combo like cEDH players do. In casual EDH you should treat it as a pre-emptive super counter spell, drop it on problem players upkeep. I would still only give it a C in most decks though, as like counter spell your going -1 for the rest of the table and in this case your target doesn't even loss a card. Orim's Chant is just better in every way that matters in casual EDH.

I really disagree with your assessment of Grand Abolisher. Unless you are considering every single combo deck to be cEDH (they aren't), your assumption that it is never relevant outside of cEDH is horribly wrong. Winning with a combo deck almost always comes down to being able to get all the pieces you need on the board at once. If you can do that, typically you win on the spot. Grand Abolisher helps to ensure none of your opponents can disrupt this. Once you start the turn with Grand Abolisher out, you know they won't be able to respond and can take the risk of actually casting your combo pieces. To say this situation only comes up in cEDH is not accurate at all.

I think any late game deck would love ghostly prison. It doesnt protect you forever, but it does one of two things. (1) it guarantees that you will get to your late game...sure you take some damage, but you are there or (2) it forces a player to use enchantment removal. In the 2nd scenario, you can say that about anything....so the 2nd shouldn't influence the ranking. Id say the ranking should be a C-. It does its job perfectly in a late game control deck. Not so much in anything else

There's three reasons not to play smothering tithe: 1. you can't protect yourself from three other players or win quick enough, 2. it's super annoying, 3. it's bloody expensive. Other than that, it's stupidly good as everyone knows by now. Man I hate this effect and how it slows down games

Land tax is NOT a land ramp card. It never puts you ahead in mana. While i agree that its not a pure auto-inlcude, its synergy with scroll rack makes it one of whites best card draw effects. Seriously, whats better than fetching 3 random lands to then ditch for x+3 cards on the top, then just to shuffle them away on your next upkeep, all the while being able to get under draw restrictions like spirit of the labyrinth?

As a long standing mono white/red and Boros player, I find myself not playing land tax as much these days, even in my mono white. It's a dead draw later in the game and only good in early hands. It's also quite replaceable by cheaper cards like gift of estates or wayfarer (that can search for any land). I've moved away from it a couple of years ago and never looked back. Fun fact, I have an Elesh Norn deck

I think you guys underestimate Red Elemental Blast, I understand it's not about CEDH but a lot of people play blue aswell in casual, if you play mono red and you really need your commander to get through it's really nice to be able to get rid of a counterspell. Often I'm able to counter Rhystic Study early or destroy it which is something red normally can't do, counter a cyclonic rift. Red also plays wheels and looting effects which makes you able to get rid of it if it's stuck in your hand, I wouldn't consider it a F.

I've never tried Grand Abolisher out myself but I have the strictly worse version, Dosan the Falling Leaf, in my Xenagos deck and my god does he rumble. Unless someone's playing counterspells you cast it and they don't even get the chance to deal with it before it's static effect kicks in. It literally protects itself, asceticism doesn't even do that! Sure it needs a proactive deck but nothing feels better than slamming a Dosan/Grand Abolisher effect into a hastey Balefire Dragon Also as a side note; love the position it puts your opponents in after when they then have to choose between dealing with the new threat or risking that fresh protected hell they went through in the last of your turns again

You guys are really underestimating the impact of ghostly prison and Grand abolisher. Prison is perfect in those decks where you dont have a lot of creatures like voltron decks or control decks. Grand abolisher is a definite auto include in some decks and should be a high consideration for many other decks. Many decks just want to build up a board state and then wait for the right opportunity to go off. You can even keep this in your hand until you want to go off. As long as it doesnt get countered, you can do whatever you want during your turn and your opponents can't interact. That's awesome no matter if you are a creature based deck or a combo deck.

i rarely play swords to plowshare in white decks. i don't like cards that just remove creatures. i normally try to get permanent removal because creature rarely matter so much that i would like to remove more than 1-2 in a game and instead just win before creatures, that aren't literally win that turn or when they untap. i am used to building, without even wanting to do it, decks that lock down the board or win turn 6. i just have to make sure that i don't lose to win and with experience you know what matter and what not and most things don't matter to your game plan if your not in lower power levels. ps.: knight of the white orochi is better than you give it credit. searching non basic lands untapped is even good if you play green, where you have the land base that fits. it gets whatever color you need and you can use it right away and thats strong when you know that your opponents do land ramp.

I don't understand the hate on the Ghostly Prison effects. if your meta ends the game through combat at least a good chunk of the time, they are a relevant speed bump that can buy you another turn or three over the course of the game, more if you have them stack up. and if creatures swinging are not regularly a part of ending your games, your group and meta are an anomaly in the EDH community.
