@@gratuitouslurking8610 2/3 of the original trilogy stories were about blowing up the death star, anyone who complains about rehashing story in startwars has as much idea of what makes starwars good as Rian Johnson does. It's a space opera, just like in soap operas the overall story doesn't matter it's only there so we can see characters interact, every single Iconic moment from starwars is about characters and JJ understood that's why at the end of the force awakens all you have is questions about characters, Who's snoke? who are rays parents? where is luke? ect, while when you have an generic action story like in the last jedi the only real question is "Why are they making another movie after this?" because the rebels have lost, there is no way to recover without some stupid bullshit like finding a lost rebel fleet somewhere and there are no questions about the characters. Rogue one was a good action movie, but it's not a space opera like episodes 1 to 7, Though i would be happy for them just to abandon the main series and just make decent spin offs like this and not trying to bait people in like they did Solo: The story no one asked for.
@_l-_-l_5 жыл бұрын
@jason lewis Well yea, it's a trilogy, he was writing it as one, the only mainline stand alone Star wars movie is Star Wars (A New Hope) because it was never intended series. Basically everything you mentioned doesn't matter, not trying to be rude but, watch the first 3 movies and they tell you fuck all about the political state of the galaxy or how they manage to build 2 death stars so quickly. Sure the prequels gave us a shit ton of lore but, people hated them...well until TFA and TLJ came out, now I only see people talking about how good they are, disney basically sat down JJ and told him to stay the fuck away from anything that even remotely looked like the prequels, so that's why there isn't even a hint of lore in the movies. JJ did fine setting everything up, it was rian that fucked it, was TFA a master piece, no but nether was A new hope which is weakest of the original trilogy and I'm not even going to mention how god awful the phantom menace was compared to clone wars and return of the sith.

@@demitraferles7970 Not really. Firstly, I'm not sure how Doctor Who wasn't politically correct before. Like, you had that Silurian woman and the other woman having an on-screen snog in series 8, and Bill being black and lesbian, and some of the pro-worker (I can't think of a better word) lines that the Doctor had in series 10, like the bit in Thin Ice when he shuts down that posh racist guy. Secondly, I think it's just that the writing was not good. None of the characters felt like real people, or different people for that matter, motivations for doing anything important rarely made sense, the villains were uninteresting, let alone unthreatening and the dialogue was just truly _awful._ Even if the Doctor had been a guy as normal, she would have still been grossly unDoctorlike. She had giant spiders starve to death, murdered that Amazon worker guy in cold blood, got the Master sent to a concentration camp, and was utterly pathetic in hiding behind her so-called "social awkwardness" as an excuse not to comfort Graham about his cancer worries. The acting was similarly dull, although I suppose we can blame that on the absence of real characters to act out, and the music wouldn't even fit a department store lift. I can tell you, as someone who watched series 11 and 12, that it doesn't have anything to do with politics, especially not when the only things it really gets right are "racism is bad" and "climate change is bad". The show just happened to be shite.

Joanna Lumley was the Doctor for 90 seconds in a Comic Relief sketch. In that time she gave more personality and character to the Doctor than I saw in the entire last season. I can't tell you what Wittakers Doctor is, what quirks she has, etc. except her being female. I can't tell you about the personality of her companions other than "Old guy" "Clumsy guy" and "girl." I couldn't give you a summary of a single episode from the entire season. It was just bland.
@billyandrew4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the heads up. I only watched young Smith as the Dr, because of young Pond's incredible acting. I somehow doubted a female Dr would do well, because Chibnal is incapable of writing a strong female role. I've heard her performances were tepid. Personally, I expect an alien of the Dr's calibre to both amuse and terrify me, which is why my respective placings would be Tennant, Eccleston, then Hartnell. The Dr is fond of our species, but brooks little nonsense from us.

I wish more people would look at this show with more love and understanding. It's debatably the greatest TV show in the world and the longest running so just imagine the pressure on Chris Chibnall and the new writers to deliver. They're all trying to fill gigantic shoes here and the show did grow stronger from season 11 to 12. I've grown to love Jodie and I'm still giving these writers and Chris a lot of slack. Basically, Chibbs writes plot-driven stories instead of character-driven ones. And not only do character-driven stories work better generally, it’s especially the case for Doctor Who because The Doctor, the companions, the monster and how they all interact based on the choices and themes in the episode is kind of the whole point of the show. Smith was my first Doctor, and I feel in love with him. Then I learned about the hate he got for "replacing Tennant", and I felt so bad for him, since he was overshadowed for a while by how he performed the role. Then I learned how practically everyone who got the role after a previous version got hate at first, then people adapted to them in time. I'm not feeling that for 13, especially after how much they've emphasized how 12 was the final form the Doctor can take. I feel like 13 is professionally produced fan fiction. Edit: Glad you spoke about the Van Gogh episode in this. Undeniably my favorite episode of the entire series. It helped me with my own depression and, though he still succumbs to it in the end, and even if it was fictitious, seeing him react to the impact his art makes in this current time gave me so much hope for my own work.

because it's essentially is a fan fiction. Chibnail didn't direct the show with respect and it shows. It shows in characters, it shows in writing and it shows in ret cons. If previous ret cons while still kinda iffy at least attempted to actually somehow justify themselves, Chibnail's retcons were like "eh, whatever, I want it that way". I mean man himself said that show didn't talk about important issues. So basically everything that was written during 13th era was to "fix" this or that.

What worries me about this new direction in Doctor Who is that, when the ratings inevitably slump, BBC might chalk it up to the Doctor being a woman, and not the fact that the writing is shit. 47:15 -- so wait, let me get this straight, -- the plot of this episode literally revolves around how a time traveling racist goes back in time to stop Rosa Parks from getting on that bus, because... Civil Rights movement never would've started if it weren't for Rosa Parks? Tf? As if the impossibly restrictive unbearably racist conditions of the 1950s wouldn't have inevitably caused someone else to say 'f*ck it, I'm not taking this anymore.' Jesus. What a plan there, guy. What a high stakes plot line. What a dumb freaking idea for an episode. Also yeah that's bullshit the Doc just stood there and let a companion take it, like what the hell? Doc would've been all over that dude's ass.
@ampersandcastle10913 жыл бұрын
Exactly, it weirdly takes credit away from the civil rights movement. By implying that the world would just be racist forever if Rosa didn’t get on the bus at that SPECIFIC time under those SPECIFIC conditions, it makes it seem like a coincidence or a spur-of-the-moment decision, not a plan that was crafted by the leaders of the movement. If the bus had empty seats so Rosa wouldn’t have had to move at that moment, she just would’ve done it on another day
@sorryifoldcomment85962 жыл бұрын
It's so weird! If he actually thought this through, he would go way back in time and stopped the African slave trade. 🤦Only way to stop the civil rights movement from ever succeeding is by never letting it start: stop African Americans from ever being brought from Africa. Obviously it would be more complicated, because racism would still exist. But if he made sure slavery never happened, and that the only Africans who make it to America are wealthy immigrants by choice, then that would solve a lot. Just, so so so dumb. Also a tragic lost opportunity to actually explain the truth behind Rosa Parks (she wasn't the first, it was a different woman. Rosa Parks was specifically chosen to be the first public & published example - to the media). But no, the characters all act like Rosa Parks was literally the first and a huge deal, when really it was about everyone else involved and the entire movement. 🤦

Chibnall criticized DW for not really challenging the audience way back when, and you can see how that viewpoint has influenced the latest season. Thing is, it's even less challenging now. That was a good episode. Hell there's a scene now where 13 describes her change as an 'upgrade' despite contradicting the fact that Timelords surpassed concepts like this a long time ago. pinkchihua Ada Lovelace being in spyfall was so odd, they just seemed to clutter up what started as an interesting modern day story. Also they had Lovelace and Babbage but only treated Ada Lovelace as being important, it seems like they are trying to ignore one persons achievement so they can make a woman seem like the main creator. They were both important and deserved more than to be shoehorned in to an unrelated episode. The best message doctor who has had was Martha in Elizabethan London, mentioning that people may notice that she’s black only for the doctor to effectively say people won’t care. It let Martha be something more than her race as she could actually develop a personality, while also having a great message that you shouldn’t care about someone’s race. To compare that message with today, it’s as if we’ve taken a step backwards far from the policy of letting people be people everything is aimed at going look at that minority they need help and extra representation because they definitely are incapable of doing something themselves, then getting angry at white people for thinking this isn’t fair. It’s fine to have a message, but if you’re making people take a step back and go what you have fucked up, the best message is one that someone watching in the future won’t notice like the Star Trek kiss between Kirk and Uhura, massive then but something without knowing the context doesn’t seem unusual for the plot. The recent poisoned planet episode which SPOILERS turns out to be earth because writers are predictable, was so on the nose about climate change it’s ridiculous, we know it’s a problem don’t patronise us.

Oh that’s actually interesting. The aliens could come from a planet where these hunting competitions are used to give status to different people. It would give the doctor this odd three way situation of 2 characters stopping each other from killing someone because they want to kill them themselves, while the doctor is stuck in the middle just trying to stop them both and save the person. What a fun way to introduce a new companion too, by having them at the center of a ridiculous sci fi alien society thing they can really reinforce their role as the grounded half of The Who dynamic who is meant to be a vessel for the viewer. It lets the doctor have a strong conflict and allows the doctor to have time with a new companion who can also have chances to show off why they would be a good and unique new companion. As far as concepts for an episode, and more specifically a new series introductory episode, of doctor who I actually really love this idea.

@Joshua Simpson That was a bit different. The Doctor, as a character, had been dealing with U.N.I.T. off on for a long time (I think an early version with Stweart, not even a Brigadier yet first appeared during the second Doctor's time) and he had, in the past, had conversations with the people in charge about their tactics, to no avail. I would also point out that: (1) Other people's lives were in danger and don't think the Doctor is going to demand that U.N.I.T. soldiers risk innocent lives going in unarmed and helpless and (2) most of the creatures U.N.I.T. faced were bulletproof or had a way to disable their guns so it was a moot point. Seriously, I don' think there has ever been a "Doctor Who" episode with U.N.I.T. where their guns did anything but annoy the evil alien(s). I would also say that is a far cry from "you can't shoot the giant spider, that's cruel, we'll just let it die a slow and painful death because it can' breathe or whatever.
