Nitro Engine Break in

I made a video a few years ago but it was with a break in bench. I go through how to break in a nitro engine the right way.
After I moved the camera to look down on the truck better it cut my head off a bit. Probably looks better anyway haha.

As most common people hate to break in new engines,i find myself enjoying the prosess. Take my time to do it properly;and dont just rush trough it. I have never ruined an engine. Take care of it,and spend a few minutes on after run service. And USE after run oil ALWAYS when storing it! And dismantle it from time to time to inspect it.

I just bought my 1st nitro rc car, Losi 8ight Buggy. I've only ran electric before and wanted to give nitro a chance. I just started a to break in the engine. Glad to hear that some of the things you you ran into are normal & what they meant. Like the idling up & down a bit, a few sudden stalls, the cooling the engine down between tanks. I feel a bit more confident now with the 3 idle tanks I ran. Specially seeing a substantial amount of oil exiting the pipe as I knew it's recommended to run rich to keep things lubricated. I used the heat gun to keep it to keep it in the 220-260F range. Keeping really close temp watch with a laser temp gun. Tomorrow I will start tank #4 by doing the slow figure 8 runs @ ~25% throttle & 50% throttle for tank #5. As a 1st timer & little experience with tuning carbs I'm really trying to not screw it up lol. Thanks for taking the time to make this video & explaining things in an easy to understand method. 😎👍

Thanks for the great video and being an ambassador of the nitro hobby. If I ever get an engine modded, I will certainly send it to you. I feel like those .28 novas are so touchy, super popular engines but touchy and sort of inconsistent between engines, mine wasn’t that tight either and it took me awhile but I have it running pretty good. Cool video. I'm curious as to how many times you needed to change the starter wheel in 10 years? Do they last a long time?

The wheel is worn quite a bit but they were always out of stock when I tried to order them. they are the original wheels. I have had to fix the contacts when the top goes down to connect and start the box a few times.

I hate heating up the engine in the car because I have to aluminum foil everything so it doesn't melt and it's a pain in the butt do you think I could heat it up a few times with it out the car doing the heat cycle I dont use head heaters

Yes doing one or 2 heat cycles on a new engine before you put it in would be fine.

I have a Traxxas trx 3.3 engine that I just rebuilt that needs broken in. I know Traxxas has their own recommend method for break in and says that normal methods will ruin the engine. Is this really true or should I break in the engine like how you broke in yours?

I have heard the Traxxas method is weird but I don't know what it is. If you follow this procedure and take your time it will not ruin any engine. The 3.3 I do not think comes super tight either like some race engines do.

It depends on if you plan on racing or not. Honestly if you do not have experience driving an Rc car very much elelctric is easier to learn on.

I'd like to try my hand at nitro and where to begin is where im stuck, with the current offerings of vehicles. Just to bash around not race fyi. Thanks again.

@@Icanreadgood1 The Losi Rtr truggy is popular. I really am more of a racer so hard to answer. There is a FB group calle Nitro Enthusiast's.

@@TheRwmods Yes. The Losi 8 RTR is a good choice. I would also recomend HoBao Hyper7 its an older buggy but they are as tough as they come. The Kyosho NEO buggy is good too from what I hear. All those are in the same price range around $350. The Kyosho MP9TKI4 RTR is your best choice for RTR buggy but its around $499. Hope this helps.

Most just run one quart and it is ready to run after that.

Yes, doing sleeve resizing, full rebuilds and modifying are the main things I do.

I'm rediscovering nitro racing after 15 year hiatus, I normally use 30% nitro powermaster fuel for racing, I'm building my new car with o.s. speed engine, should I use 20% nitro fuel with more oil %? or I can go with 30% for break in?

You can use 30% for break in or 25% or 20% its up to you. I just run 25% all the time. As for the oil, go with about 10% or you can do a little more or less. As rex did in the video he just used 8% and added extra oil, probably around 10%

this is where people get mixed up with hobao and ofna. ofna racing was a distributor for hobao back in the day that blue starter box is originally a hobby pro starter box got nothing to do with hobao they dont do starter boxes anymore last time they did them was around when the hyper 7 PCR and PBS and PRO were around that was the last time they did starter boxes... as you see here with this link from a hobby store i bought this box from www.hobbyhabit.com.au/HP-H0159.html

Question ????? Just got a kyosho nitro tracker every time i power on transmitter then receiver the steering works the throttle does not i switched the stterin and throttle wires ant throttle works steering??? What is bad???? Or what should i do????

do not know if you found one yet but they are going for 4 to 500 now I just paid 450 for a modded gimar new old stock on ebay that guy has 1 more like mine and a couple of the pullstart models the gimar like mine is awesome mine has alot of pull and top end just got it back from ADAM DRAKE and broke in bet it will get so much better after a couple gallons but parts are not at all easy to find and some are selling china bootlegged parts so only by new in the bag and still be careful

Great tips, but never cool down with a fan, let it cool naturally, you risk warping or cracking and puts the metal through unnecessary stress. - Ev
