We’ve unearthed another neat video we took in the past. This time it was from our trip to Italy for a full tour of the NovaRossi engine factory. This trip took place back in 2014, but it’s a trip we’ll never forget. In the factory, we got a tour of each section where NovaRossi engines are made as well as the engine accessories. It was pretty amazing to see what goes into making an engine. But towards the end of our tour was a real treat. One of the NovaRossi engine techs had just bolted up an engine onto a break-in stand in their engine room and proceeded to show us how they break in a brand new engine for their factory drivers. Now the video clip you are about to see is just step one of the break-in procedure which is running the engine fitted with a prop for about ten minutes (after its up to temperature) nearly at full throttle while monitoring temps and RPM. Unfortunately we’ve lost our notes of break-in run time durations, frequency or break-in runs, prop sizes, fuel type and so on, but it’s still a cool video to see. After the break-in there is a video clip that includes some of the discussion we had about the break-in that will give you some idea about the temperatures and RPM. Please note the audio can be a bit high pitch during the break-in part and the GoPro mic quality is a bit poor during the discussion, but we wanted to include everything we had in case someone finds it interesting. Please feel free to discuss your break-in tips in the comments section to help out anyone searching for nitro engine break-in help.

I do hard break ins myself.. just let it warm up the first time richen the F out of it and ram that throttle wide open for a couple of seconds. The engines love it and have been running great so far! Its just my way of doing it. If you buy a good engine like Novarossi's or something else it shouldnt harm the engine. Get it up to temp and smoothen that sleeve/piston out! With slow break-ins i always found myself not getting the best out of the engine to be honest.. Nice video of a screaming Nova :D

Sure, but with high performance engines sometimes luck also involved. Like for example my O.S. R21GT's conrod snapped near the piston pin, near the end of break in period. Everything looks fine and shiny, no scratch, hotspot and all. It was heart breaking coz I have to do it all over again. Nevermind the repair but time and fuel and tires and lap after lap went into breaking in that engine. But this guy did it in 10min....

This shows that novarossi has insanely good motors. I’m running the original novarossi p5 in my buggy that came out over 17 years ago. That’s older than me! And that thing still sings. That motor is the same one on the box for the mugen mbx5 buggy which was released in 2003. I would love to get another novarossi whenever that p5 decides to give up on me

Between Nova’s method and EBIS, I wonder what works “best” for a balance of performance and longevity. Right now, I run an EBIS’d OS B2102 and given the performance and reliability I’ve seen so far, I don’t think I’d ever revert to an old-school engine break-in procedure (driving the car on the ground with engine super rich).
@golferchin76
@golferchin76 3 жыл бұрын
That old school method is really old, the conrod can break even during the break in period. Modern methods are more towards hard break-in. Some will even after just a tank of idling on the starter, go 90% race tune at the track and limit the throttle opening with EPA, but never cold start and never run it while it is less than 90 deg.C The idea is that once the engine reaches 100C and above, the sleeve actually opens up and load is tolerable on conrod-the weakest link which can break apart even if it looks fine.

Really interesting as a fairly experienced nitro car enthusiast. Is it not the case that a plane would have a better quality engine and running at high rpms under lower loads makes sense. A car typically has a lower quality motor and probably owned by somebody with far less experience. A car requires more use of lower rpms and so a different break in works.

I break in my O.S. R21GT on the track, hard break in. It takes me weeks to break in an R21GT (weekend visits). Time, tires, fuel, lap after lap, running up and down checking temp and adding fuel, you know the drill. Very rarely but the conrod can also break apart during this period. This guy does it in 10min ....... maybe I should make a bench like this to test on a cheap made in China engine, see if I can break it in without breaking it in 10 min.

If i broke in a nitro like this, the cops would be everywhere. Is this a better break in? Or should i stick to average joe shmos technique? If a company that builds them does this, id say its ok.

It's a better break in because the engine is loaded and actually near it's operating tempature but slightly rich, when the engine is warm running it promotes a tighter clearance between the piston and sleeve = less wear Idling makes the engine run cool which makes the clearances increase= more slop between the piston and sleeve causing more wear.

Those are experts, which have been making superb engines for decades. I would expect they know what they are doing. Also they warmed it up first, which doesn't take long at all with those small engines. I tried it recently with one of my (plane) engines on the test stand, maybe 20-30s. The common reasoning behind it doing this way is: After you have reached a certain manufacturing precision, break-in doesn't have to "rub off" manufacturing impurities anymore. It then just have to make a fine seal, and you want this to happen at the specified load, because engine parts deform slightly under temperature and pressure. If you break it in under lower load, the seal will be perfect at this load, not at full power. Lycoming as a manufacturer of full-scale airplane engine even prescribes doing it that way for a new engine or after an overhaul: www.lycoming.com/content/hard-facts-about-engine-break Yes this is for ringed engines, but it is even more important for ABC engines (and every single car engine is an ABC engine nowadays). Those are manufactured to fit at operating temperature and pressure, which is why they are tight when cold and new. You actually don't want to wear the tightness away, since this material will be missing later when it gets hot. There is one exception in RC engines, and this is a lapped iron piston engine. Those pistons (due to their metallurgy) expand slightly during the first few hours of running, therefore you have to break them in slowly and let them totally cool off between runs.
