This is probably a 15 year old RC nitro engine that I found on ebay and bought it. It was really cheap so I thought why not. I'm planning to use it in an upcoming project, but it needs better cooling since it's going to be stationary. I had a cooling head that was bigger and that could work. I mount it on the lathe and brought it to the required dimensions and this is the result!

You should take one of these R/C motors and build an active cooling unit for it. building a tiny, tiny water pump seems like just your kind of thing.

I've had two of that exact engine back in the days. One of them had the carburettor bored out to a bigger dimension, it was a lot faster than the standard one. Would rev mor and was more agressive from a standstill, but couldn't give it full throttle right away when stationary. This was one of the smallest kyosho engines when they were new.

RC supercharger or turbocharger build?
@johnnyq90
@johnnyq90 7 жыл бұрын
I would love to, but turbocharging or supercharging a 2 stroke and on this scale isn't going to add anything in performance. A tuned pipe would work better in my opinion.
@RCGrid

johnnyq90 That's what I've read and understand, I was wondering if you'd debunk the theory of a nitro turbocharger
@johnnyq90
@johnnyq90 7 жыл бұрын
That would be nice, and I was searching about a similar build with no luck. On the other hand, a 4 stroke rc engine is a better platform for turbocharging.

You mean between the cooling head and the glow plug? Yes there is one, but in my case I needed a much thicker one, so I made one out of brass off camera to match the distance that the previous head had between the piston and the glow plug.
@ghettoflyer
@ghettoflyer 7 жыл бұрын
Since the engine works more or less like a diesel, why not like a modern diesel have a convex dome on the piston and the glow plug be completely flat? Theoretically the fuel would burn more completely (as it demonstrated on the clear head wasn't completely burning) and the power stroke force would be more directly excreted on the center of the piston ( not to mention better seal at TDC = less blow by) Possibly creating a swirl as fuel/air entered the cylinder at BDC, because of the dish helping better mixing the fuel/ air charge?

Nice, I'm really interested what your project will be, cause as you might know I've been into nitro rc for a long time;) for a stationary engine, this might not be enough cooling, depending on your application. I use such an engine in my submarine and passive air cooling wasn't enough, but you'll see
@johnnyq90
@johnnyq90 7 жыл бұрын
You are correct, it's a not a huge improvement over the original cooling head. Nevertheless, I will add a fan on the flywheel and with a duct it will blow air into the cylinder head.

Most of the cooling actually comes from the fuel going into the engine for Nitro engines, still a good idea with the bigger head though.

i remember that between the "camicia"(in italian cause i don't know it's name in english...) and the cylinder head there was a brass(or copper, i don't remember well) washer to seal the gap for better compression, at least in the engines i had, those engine can reach very high temperatures at high throttle, and also very high rpm! the downside is that this fuel is very aggressive and corrosive... maybe you need to change some parts to get better performance

You should make a supercharger for it =) I experimented with putting a coppertube between the cooling fins. My plan was to make it a watercooled engine. But, i was 12 or something and had no clue how to build the pump or get a small radiator. You could totally do it =)
@perez9619
@perez9619 7 жыл бұрын
Superchargers don't make enough power to justify the cost of going through the hassle, some would even argue if it even has an effect since the exhaust and intake are open at the same time allowing for any "boost" to leak out the exhaust pipe. Some say "tuned" pipes alleviate this but there's no valid proof on the concept. RB innovations data is complete horse shit if you were going to mention them.

Fantastic work. I'm in the process of figuring out how RC engines work and this helps. I've actually designed a .21 1/8th scale buggy engine in the quest to create more bottom end out of that .21 size Most are around 3hp and I would like to hit the 4.5hp range and set the Diffs up with heavier oil and gears. I just find these engines very interesting. Again great work you're doing. ;)

RC glow fuel, also often called nitro fuel, is a special blend of three main ingredients, plus a few minor additives, used in radio control model engines. There are several different blends of glow fuel available, suited to different types of engine and performance requirements.The three main ingredients are methanol, oil (Castor or synthetic) and nitromethane, the latter being the one that puts the word nitro into so many rc terms (nitro plane, nitro car, nitro engine...) even though rc glow fuels don't always contain it.
