Yep the death knell was warming up in the wings when these guys hit. People were fed up with the bloated cock rock cheese and were searching for heavier more down to earth tones. Extreme/death metal/grindcore was in its infancy, not to mention grunge.

I’m not sure if I occasionally watch this video because it’s kind of catchy or because of the hot blonde. The members of the band have a ton of talent but it was all lost with their attempt to go beyond over the top. I recognize the talent but what the band put out was a mess.

@gustavomolinari7522
@gustavomolinari7522 2 жыл бұрын
Tô be honest, I never really understood why this band failed. They seem too skilled to play Glam rock, and maybe this is why it sounds so plastic. Once I saw a video here on KZbin, where the host said that NITRO's original plan was to be a DEATH METAL band. Yes can you believe it? BUT, their producer back then convinced them that they could make it big in Glam. It might be so, because the band lacks a lot of identity, and it seems they are doing it just for money/girls and so it looks goofy. But, playing a more technical style, progressive, technical death, NWOHM, they really could go big, big. I don't know if that story about death met is true, but to be honest: no one dedicates that many hours on an instrument to play hard rock or glam....
@TheDevilsTriangle
@TheDevilsTriangle Жыл бұрын
By this point in time this style was basically just "more of the same". The market was flooded with groups like Faster Pussycat, L.A. Guns, Slaughter, Poison, etc. So much so that we started getting bands like Enuff Z'Nuff and Trixter. Glam was already over the top without a lot of headspace, so to push it even further you get something like Steel Panther (without the satire). As for technicality; there was no shortage of groups around this time that were technically solid but the overall songwriting just wasn't there. I used to call them "music for guitarists" because you would always see their albums in the back of Guitar World magazine, but never on the shelves. (As an aside - my introduction to Gillette was an ad for his solo album in the back of Circus magazine c. 1987). Racer X and MSG were two of these bands; technically brilliant but only listened to by other musicians. Satriani and Vai were two artists that eventually broke out of this with some commercial success. Later, Paul Gilbert from Racer X hit it big with Mr. Big (pun intended lol) To your second point - Imagine if they had taken it in the direction of something like Sanctuary (i.e. Battle Angels). That would have been a GREAT fit for Gillette's voice and thrash lumbered along long after Glam had died.

How this song came about: Jim Gillette desperately wanted his band to be exactly like Guns n Roses. Not inspired, not even in the same genre. He wanted an EXACT copy, and of course, he gets to be Axl Rose. He grabs a thesaurus, a guitar, all the famous rock ballads, and goes to work. 2 hours later he comes out with this, and does not want input from anyone. "Just record it" he says, while asking for a few quarters from the producer so he can call his mom. It's a long distance call, cause she lives deep in the country. Jim's mom, a sweetheart, rallies the whole town for a day "because Jim is shooting a video with his friends". After successfully shooting for a day, they have video. They just need an editor now. It just so happens that the producer's girlfriend works editing commercials back in New York, so on their way back they shoot the World Trade Center. "Wouldn't it be funny if those huge towers..." says Jim before being interrupted by the flight attendant asking if he wanted another Coke. The producer's girlfriend gets all the footage, and as a favor, finish the video. Jim is excited, he looks EXACTLY like Axl! Snake moves on point, hair, girls rubbing his thighs. "MTV is gonna play this back to back!" he said as his band mates listened. They never commented on anything he said. Nobody cares about the video. Nobody knows about the video still today. But here we are, 32 years later, enjoying the last vestiges of what someone thought was "so metal", never thinking that people on a site called "KZbin" would be enjoying the video on a completely unintended context.

Their music is pretty decent for the era. They would have gone further if they didn't come in so late in the game as that type of music was fading out. The live footage and the band just messing around town is good. They shouldn’t have bothered with filming the “story” part. Love the song though.

Yep. Same thing happened to Grunge later in the 90s when post-grunge arrived and you had Pearl Jam clones like Creed and Nirvana clones like Puddle of Mudd.

So we’re just gonna sit here and not say anything about David Letterman’s face on a bass? Why does everyone of Nitros videos seem like they’re playing a different song than the video? The solo is the usually the only thing that matches. David Letterman bass! I want to know where that bass is
