Then this guy comes on and starts cutting heads, oh it was bloody, this guy killed everyone, I just stood there in amazement, this guy is a freak of a guitar player. Michael is a well known musician don’t get me wrong but he doesn’t get the credit he deserves. People have no idea how many hours you have to put in every day for many years to play this fast cleanly and on time. We’re talking 8 hours a day for 15 years and all the other time free time you have is studying music theory. When I was really practicing guitar and in bands I spent an average of 4 hours per day for a few years and I never got anywhere near his playing. Even though I practiced 4 hours per day it was amazing how long it still took to get better at any one thing. I put in hours each day for months trying to get my sweep picking skills up I did get much better but I couldn’t get the speed up fast enough it wasn’t until I learned a better technique from some random guy on KZbin who doesn’t even have many views and within a week I doubled my speed. I spent tons of hours going through youtube watching sweep picking videos and taking lessons from different teachers but non of them taught this and I think it’s because most people don’t even realize they do this. All it was is after you sweep one string you don’t take your finger off that string you just take some pressure off it’s just like rolling your finger on one fret to pick 3 different notes and that’s what the trick to playing fast and clean. The only reason I say this is the amount of time and dedication it takes. Rock on Michael

Shred sure is a form of art - play smart, not necessarily as hard. Self-awareness saves some time yet experience is always welcome. As you said, many of the pros can't necessarily convey their skills to the masses proficiently enough as they just "do their thing". Mike said someplace that he had his picking figured out in "couple of" years at the age of 15 or so (ball park). Undisputable though that it takes hard practice and "talent". What counts most of the phrases here is the economic (efficient) motion of your picking hand and awareness of the pick position. Left hand stuff is important as well but most people are limited by their picking hand as they can play decent legato. To conclude, yeah, this is definitely extreme level of brute force picking, and I do appreciate the sound of it over legato. Comes to preference. Mike sure is a living legend as you stated! Rock on, dude!

This is absolutely not true. I mean, yes you have to practice diligently, but with persistence you could probably learn how to shred fairly well over the summer. Really, MAB is mostly about picking speed and fairly easy sweeping technique - not that difficult to learn. Someone like Michael Romeo or Jason Becker style of playing, that's going to be a lot more effort and finesse. Music theory? What's that? No, you don't need to know jack shit about music theory. Just pick up and play and after a while you should be able to figure most stuff out by ear.

To all the people that say that he doesn't play with any feeling or there is no point in being this fast, you are probably not musically trained. If you are used to listening to fast music you are actually able to distinguish the notes that he is playing even in his fast mode. Not only he is incredibly fast but also there is subtlety and sophistication in the melody and the notes he plays. The passages themselves are extremely diverse and span different styles. Most people cannot distinguish between notes at that speed so they just deem it without feel. I mean it is okay to not understand this style or like it but when you put your subjective opinion as an objective fact and criticize nonsensically, you are just making a fool of yourself

Everyone loves a guitar that has two octaves on the fretboard that you have to intonate for. What an asswhip that would be to tune, intonate at 12, and intonate at 24. I’m guessing that he doesn’t even give half a shit about intonation between 24 and 29 because no one would ever be able to tell it’s not since he does 34 notes per string every half second.

I remember watching this as a entry level guitarist at 13 years old and i immediately said "i dont think i want to play guitar anymore." Not realizing this guy dedicated his life to playing, was extremely talented, very intelligent with music, and he also isnt credited for making a single song thats iconic meanwhile guitarists who are considered to be significantly more simple gave the world drastically iconic songs. That, gave me inspiration again. Realizing there was levels. Its also incredible to think that theres significantly more talented artists around today, but this old stuff, deserves respect. Its still impressive. Very 1980s heavy metal.
