Nitrogen hypoxia if carried out correctly is painless and quite euphoric, however tis is usually accomplished by slowly reducing the oxygen over a period of time in a chamber, wearing a mask and simply pumping in Nitrogen is not the correct method and is akin to suffocation. There is a very interesting documentary by Michael Portillo about the death penalty, in this he experiences Nitrogen hypoxia in a sealed altitude chamber used by the RAF for training pilots, the Oxygen level was slowly reduced to mimic the effects of high altitude and he was slowly rendered almost insensible by Nitrogen hypoxia, the RAF training officer in the chamber with him had to assist him in applying the Oxygen mask as he was so "out of it". The method used to execute Smith was not how Nitrogen hypoxia is usually carried out and was more like suffocation, which is less than painless.

Actually, you are incorrect. Whether slow rising N2 or by Pure N2, the impact is the same. N2 eliminates/displaces O2 in the lungs and body. The body continues to use up O2. Breathing is controlled by CO2 levels in the lungs and breathing will stop when minimal CO2 is present. People subject to N2 hypoxia simply drift off. A man I know who survived it in a chem plant flat out said he went to sleep. No pain. They use N2 hypoxia to simulate high altitude effects based on this principle. Increasing he N2 reduces O2 like going up to high altitudes. Earlier forms of the testing and training used atmospheric chambers and actually reduced the air pressure, however people did in fact die during the testing because they could not get them out of the chamber until pressure was restored. The documentary you cite mis-represents it. Death by N2 hypoxia does not trigger body reactions since N2 is present but ignored by the body.

So? The obsolete word for nitrogen is azote, which means 'without life'.
@282XVL12 күн бұрын
Nitrogen is quite painless, however doing it with a mask would appear to have one MAJOR flaw. There is nowhere for the prisoner’s EXHALED co2 to go. So while one cannot feel or detect the difference between regular air and nitrogen, one WILL feel the exhaled co2 trapped in the mask. With positive pressure of nitrogen coming in, the mask being sealed… you won’t detect the nitrogen but you probably will detect your own exhale that ha nowhere to vent to.

You didn't miss anything. The video states it doesn't allow CO2 to leave the body, I had to double check that as I have been trained in nitrogen hazards. The video is flat out wrong. The level of CO2 in the blood is what the brain uses to sense that you need to breathe, so during nitrogen hypoxia you don't sense the lack of oxygen and CO2 levels don't increase. Same think with breathing a helium balloon, you just drop, never any sense of suffocation. I did that once as a dumb teenager. Don't suggest channel is a good option at this point.

No, as the body reacts to a buildup of CO2 but not, strangely, the lack of oxygen.

That would be one of the most painful. You breathe to get CO2 out more than to get O2 in. That pain you feel when you hold your breathe for too long is you body's reaction to CO2 build up.
