I heard the lore behind the place (from what can be gathered) is that the place that Alisa is in is a doll house that was once a mental institution where the head of the institution became obsessed with his studies toward an ancient artifact called the “Finger of God” which could turn people into monstrous forms of themselves and one of his patients that he used in his experiments became a monster that was bent on turning every person he saw into a doll using the artifact’s power. The institution fell underground due to a sinkhole and the doll monsters started to threaten the people of the nearby town, causing most of them to flee to the cities (except for the old man that stayed who was actually the husband of the woman that was turned into the black doll that chases Alisa throughout the game). Alisa was merely in the wrong place at the wrong time. Edit: Thanks for all the likes! I think this game was a work of art. Nitro Rad originally loved this comment but I had to correct a grammatical error I made and I lost it. Thanks though everyone!

It’s pretty cool how we’ve got indie devs like this successfully capturing the magic of old school ps1 horror games. If you went back in time and showed these to someone they might even think they were real. You can see real passion behind them

One thing I sort of wish for is to see one of these games with modern graphics instead of just copying the older graphics. You know, just to see how a game with tank controls and fixed camera angles would look like if they weren't replaced with over the shoulder cameras

6:00 This is probably weird to point out but I love how expressive and goofy he moves here (talking with his hands a bunch, tossing the comb in a way it falls in frame). It's such a little thing but it goes a long way in making a segment where it's focused just on him more entertaining to the viewers. He does this a lot too. Good stuff man.

I still remember when this game came out, it was one of the indie games I was the most excited for. They really nailed the aesthetic and when I finished it, I had that sensation that it was probably incomplete, there were so may things they left a mystery and places you couldn't access (not to mention the annoying bug puzzle which was bugged) I'm glad they eventually updated and for free, making it a very complete and scary experience
@Psevdonim123

Great Video Dude 🤘 2 Fun Facts 1) The game is a bit influenced by a 1988 Alice movie, directed by Jan Svankmajer (which you can find here on KZbin) 2) Two of the costumes are referenced to two of his other games
@karlhnedkovsky5214
@karlhnedkovsky5214 4 ай бұрын
Yep! Though, as is with a lot of Svankmajer's movies/short films, you really have to go in, expecting weird shit, because it really does get absurdly bizarre at times, sometimes bordering on disturbing even! But behind all that, it's a pretty good time! I do especially love Svankmajer's style, in that despite all of the bizarre shit you'll see in his movies, there's never a single iota of cg/special effects! It's all done with props, sets and stop-motion! And let me tell you, that stop-motion is master-class! He really does find a way to blend it in with the live-action settings in a way, that keeps the flow and immersion going! Good stuff!

The "leave the room to despawn the chaser" problem, funnily enough, was something I encountered in the Ao Oni fangame community. A lot of fangames tied the despawning of the chaser to the number of rooms you enter, and players would just cheese every chase by rapidly exiting and entering rooms before the chaser can spawn into the room until the chase music eventually stops playing. It's why some fangames (including mine) ended up switching over to using a timer instead of counting the exiting/entering of rooms.

@@rinraiden If I remember correctly, the HD version of the first game came bundled with the special edition of Madness Returns, and that seems to not be available anymore (dont know about PS3/360 stores). I bought Madness Returns from Steam, when you finish the game it even adds an option to play the original, but nothing happens since the file isn't there. I had to download an add-on from the seven seas to play the original, and it worked perfectly fine from the official game menu.

The appreciation of R/C cars is really illuminating when it comes to James' love of good tank controls. Also, it looks like Elzevir the Dollmaker has had a goddamn field day in this kooky little mansion. That one's for all the Blood Omen fans watching this, and I'm pretty sure you're out there, since you never really know when you're going to find an overlap between audiences. Hell, apparently there's an overlap between Civvie fans and Nitro Rad fans, highlighted by James' video on Slayers X. 20:38 is something that James went into more depth on his Twitter, since every frame in that delightful gremlinoid freakout was a golden moment, every last one worthy of a spot on the "Good Faces" Twitter.

God that shop keeper was fucking KILLING ME. Also something you didnt touch on that I liked was the voice acting. There's something about it that reminds me of the old Resident Evil games. IDK if its the mic quality or the enunciation of how they say their lines but it felt like something out of the PS1. Its such a minor detail but I think if they got voice actors who do good voice acting in the modern sense then it would feel so jarring.

This is the video that convinced me to buy the game while it was on sale, and I’m losing my mind playing it in the best possible way! This game scared me and my boyfriend multiple times while playing it together, the tension is incredible and the aesthetic and presentation are unmatched. I’m like - almost to the second boss? There’s some frustrating puzzles but none that were flat out broken. And the early game scared the shit out of me with a very clever camera change in a stairwell. It’s a wild experience and I love it so much! Highly recommend. Edit 2 weeks later: Beat it last night. It’s hard. It’s super damn hard. I loved it so, so much.

If you're a fan of goofy horror, I'd recommend Voices of the Void. The game's premise is that you're a scientist living alone up at an isolated research site, processing signals from deep space. Eventually, things escalate to horror. The game runs in the source engine, which greatly elevated both the comedy and horror aspects of the game. When you hear a weird noise in the distance, you don't know if that noise is some monster of it it's just some props clipping into each other. It's also very funny that this horror game also has you doing a 9-5

Really cool seeing a game become finished over time. Also, shoutout to the boss that constantly changes depending on what you bring to the fight. Like I recall, if you bring a helper, the boss gets one as well. If you bring a gun, she uses ranged attacks. And if you only use the sword, she only uses her sword as well. She even has different dialogue when it happens.

Just realized you did a vid on this one! I genuinely loved Alisa! Since buying it on my Switch, I played it twice over. And when I say "twice over", I mean replaying it twice with three full playthroughs both times! This was before my Switch was stolen by arsewipes mind you...but back when it could play it, I thoroughly enjoyed it! I think Alisa is paced very, very well. It does such a good job of being a survival experience on a first playthrough, but becomes a power fantasy on repeat playthroughs. To the point that this game necessitates multiple playthroughs in one given run of the game. The way the game rewards conservative play and encourages repeat playthroughs to unlock everything...as far as I'm concerned, a modern survival horror classic!

Haven’t finished it yet, will hopefully get the chance to XP Excellent review ^^ expresses a lot of what makes this game well made

If you like Eternal Darkness, you should try to review Song of Horror. Its a good horror game that I dont see a lot of people talk about. The main invisible threat adapts to how you play, and the game lets you play a selection of characters for each chapter but if one dies not only do they stay dead for the entire game, but they become ghosts that can harm you. The game does have janky mechanics but each playthrough is always different and its a fun ride.

I love the premise of this game!!! It reminds me a lot of Grabbed by the Ghoulies in terms of both the enemy designs and how it mixes horror and goofy comedy, that makes it feels very nostalgic to me even tho I’ve never played any of those PS1 horror games and that feels me with inspiration.

I almost didn't watch this because I swear you reviewed it before?? Like, the main character in that outfit, the weird creepy doll enemy, the graphics and how she shoots it in the face, even the thumbnail! Its such a weird mandala effect...

The enemy designs look incredible! The modifications look really cool and creative too. Just through watching this video I can see that the developer put in a lot of thought into this game. I hope this game will gain some more popularity.

Hey I bought the game and finished it 3 times with a 4th one left to get the last ending Really fun, like I've played tank control survival horrors before but this one sold to me how fun they can be and the music gameplay story and really just immersed me in the story Love the ps1 look and so glad you convinced me to play Did 8.50 hours on first play through 3.50 on the second and 3.00 hours on the third

I definitely remember seeing talk of this game when the early demos(?) came out, but not much after that. Nice to see how the present product came out (I saw mention that another chapter is planned). And to this day I still wonder where you found the Medabots shirt. Cool design.

Your reviews on horror games are my favorite work of yours. Your passion for the genre oozes out in each video. I don't really feel the same type of excitement coming out in reviews of any other genre.

I agree with you on the tank controls. They work well for games with fixed camera angles.
